this past weekend we have been getting alot of rain (and more to come!). yesterday my DH notices that there is a leak in the roof! in my kids room! its not big, but the ceiling is pealing apart and there is water behind the wall/paint. LOVELY!! :headache: so i called our insurance, and they gave me 3 places to call. waiting for them to call me back. they said that if the cost is under $1200 to just pay them cause our deductable is $1200. GREAT! we already have to replace a section of a wall cause there is a bit of water damage, get a new coil for our a/c unit, and now the roof! come on give us a bit of a break!! we are replacing the a/c coil in march, fixing the wall next month so matters how much the roof is going to cost matters when we can pay it. anyone know of anything i can do in the meantime to keep it as dry as possiable? just something tempory till we can get it fixed.

Can you put a tarp on the roof until you have the money to fix it?

I'm saving up for a new roof too. I had a small leak, but it hasn't happend again and we have had lots of rain since then.

We had a roof leak this year. It was only $300 to fix. They ripped up the shingles and replaced the rotting board underneath and replaced the shingles. Easy, peasy!!! I hope yours is as simple (and cheap!).

Talk to people you know and try to find someone reputable that will patch it. The companies the insurance companies recommend often aren't the most cost-effective choices, and many times they won't/don't want to patch the leak because they think they can "sell" a full reroof to the insurance company.

I hate roofers! No offense if there are any on here! When we moved out of our last house (only 3 years old) the inspector said something was Cracked on a pipe cover on our roof...and needed to be replaced... Well I should of asked for pictures...live and learn... NO roofers would come out to my house without a minimum of 300 dollars just to go look at it...It was ABSURD... Turns out the Inspector was FULL OF C R A P... and i threw 300 dollars in the toilet! UGH...

that would be AWESOME if it only cost about $300 for fix! we would be able to get it fixed on DHs next check! the people never called me back so tomorrow im going to be calling a bunch of other people. i wish i knew someone in the roofing business or at least someone who could fix it. but i dont.

It would be wonderful if it didn't cost you much. You really do not want to use your insurance unless it is absolutely necessary. If you do ,you will find your premiums will go up. (At least that is what our agent, who is our friend, tells us.)

isn't the detuctible the amount you have to opay out before the ins kicks in?? If you're paying as much as the detuctible, if something happened later in the year, they wouldn't have to pay out again?

And nothing wrong with the blue roof look. Highly fashionable in florida...

Sorry about the roof. Putting a tarp over it should work. That's what a lot of homes around here did after we got hit by Hurricane Ike. Hope it won't be a costly repair.

No free estimate/inspection from roofers in your area? We just sold our house a month ago, and the inspector said that there is a possible leak on our roof (since there was a water stain on the ceiling in my daughter's room). I called several roofers, and all of them said they will come and inspect our roof for free. I got one out, and they went up there, inspect it and said that there was no leak, and gave me a statement that my roof was in very good condition with no leak to give to the buyer...all for free.

Do you have any handy friends who could look at it? Friends of friends? I agree with the PP who said that the guys recommended by the insurance company will be high.

We had a leak in our bathroom once and called the insurance co. They sent out their guys who quoted $1500 to fix it and they were only willing to fix a part of the problem (the rest was up to us:(). Anyway, I ended up calling my dad to come visit. For $50 in parts, he fixed it up for us!!! I did need a new shower unit upstairs above and beyond that, and was able to get that through the warranty on the original shower. It was a true lesson learned for us!!!
