Ok, I know this prob. doesn't belong on this thread, but here I go anyway.
My DS brought home a "We appericate our volunteers" cert. from his school. I have had a child at this school for 9 -10 years now. I was the volunteer of the year several years ago. I spent over 97 hours making costumes for the theater dept in 2.3-3 weeks...
And not only did they spell my name WRONG!!!, but in stead of me getting it at the special Volunteers lunch the school had my DS brought it home. I never got an invite... the ***.princilal said the teacher that nominated me did not put my name on the list, so I asked how I got the cert if they didn't? No answer to that! And when I went and talked to another teacher she had a cert for me also, and it too had my name wrong!!! And I saw the note that she had sent with my name spelled correctly, and asking I be invited to the lunch...
So instead of crying I came home and read some to the great threads here on the DIS! Thanks folks! Between the funny threads, the threads that have had to cancle due to illness, and all the ones inbetween I do feel better.
And I would not have gone to the lunch, since I was volunteering at the high school, where I don't have a kid this year, but will next! I just would have liked to have been asked... I have such a great time working with the middle and high school kids! It is great to share skills with them and to be allowed to learn from them. And that is the way I also see the DIS board. So bless all of you and tons of pixie dust for letting me rant and rave!

PS it will ALL be good in less then 3 weeks! I get 3-5 days solo and then have 8-13 teen kids coming down to WDW! I can't wait! Even off site at Cypress Point. And some have never been there before! I get to show kids 13-21 stuff, and be RIGHT about somethings! YEA!!!!

I feel for you in the confusion you had but just remember that you and your kids know what you do for the school. A certificate (whether your name is spelled correctly or incorrectly) is just a piece of paper. I have had similar experiences like that at my boys school and though I get upset, I just remember that I am doing it for them and the other kids.

Have a great trip with the kids and keep up all the good work you do. The schools always need parents who can volunteer their time. A lot of times there is just not enough of us... :)

I understand how you feel. My DD is graduating this year and at the Senior Recognition they gave out certificates to students who had performed over 175 hours of community service and then the students who had in excess of 200 hours, honor cords (to wear on graduation night with their cap & gown).

I waited and listened to all the names called for the first group and my DD's name was not called. Then they announced the over 200 group. Listened again, still no DD. Immediately after that they took a break and so I called DD over to ask her about it.

She does volunteer hours with Catholic Charities and my office, United Way, all year long. She definitely had over 200 hours but had not submitted them.

It upset me more than her. In fact she really didn't care about it. My DH talked to me during the break and said that maybe for her, it wasn't about the recognition, but about doing them just to do them.

She spent 16 hours a week last summer at Catholic Charities Thrift Shop and then continued every other weekend helping at the Thrift shop. She has always volunteered at my office. In fact she is put in charge of making the campaign packets for the companies. We get other volunteers to help and she is the one who explains what has to go into the packets to the other volunteers.

I am proud of her and thought that she should be proud of the hours that she has put in. Another reason that she should have submitted them, is that some scholarships require a certain amount of community service hours.

But I guess my DH was right, it wasn't about the recognition, but the time spent doing something for someone else was something she felt was the right thing to do.

yep, you all are right! I wasn't upset so much about not getting and invite to the lunch or my name being misspelled. What does upset me is that the assc.principal tried to pass the blame off on a teacher, who I know did the correct thing, and that this is what the AP allways does! Also the kids knew about this lunch and they were not happy I was not invited... some of them asked me why I did not go, and I hate to lie to them, and I don't want to say anything bad. They knew cause some of there parents went and /or helped set the lunch up. I don't know a lot of the kids parents, just the 60-70kids in the 7-8th grade Theater program. The school is a magnet art school and I do volunteering in several depts, and it doesn't matter that DS is only in Theater Art.
I guess the point is that they made a really big production on how "special" volunteers are and the several volunteers that Theater put in some how got "forgotten" and the invites were"misplaced". So it wasn't just me. This program is one of the largest in the school with 2 teachers, and 8 classes, but is one of the lowest funded... and the teachers are discourged from asking for help/money/donations from the community.
Anyway, I am much better now. And I have told the kids that know that pizza with them is a better lunch then a volunteer lunch, which for me is true. And that sometimes everyone makes mistakes but as long as they are still need my help I will be privliaged to do what I can for them or teach them how to do stuff. And it is the kids that are important.
