will I be able to add on points directly through DVC or is there a minimum that I need to buy in with?

Thanks!

Yes. The minimum purchase (either direct or resale) is 25 points. Direct add-ons will have the same Use Year as the original contract.

Enjoy! :)

That is how we got in to DVC--we bought a small contract to start and within a week of closing, I called and added on at BLT. It is a minimum of 25 if you pay cash and 50 points if you want to finance.

I recently found out from my guide, however, if you want to start small that Disney has even been allowing new buyers in with only 50 points. He said he had no idea how long it would last (and didn't tell me what resorts it is for), but as of the other day, it was in place. The only drawback is that there are no incentives on contracts this low so you would be paying full price.

I can confirm this is true. Ask me how I know? :thumbsup2

There is one incentive. You'll get the 2010 points in addition to the 2011 points and you only pay MF on 2011. That's probably pretty standard for buying direct but it's a bonus because not all resale contracts come with 2010 points.

LOL!!! I am really happy for you!!!

Does anyone know how much are BLT points going for now direct threw Disney ?

For contracts under 100 I believe full price at $130. After that discounts start and I believe that it starts at $13 off and goes from there. Dvcnews.com has pretty up to date prices

So, it seems that buyins a small contract to get your foot in the door, with the intention of adding on extra points through Disney, isn't really the best value? There are BLT resale contracts for under $100 a point, but through Disney they are $130 a point (about, depending on the promotion, which still does not get it close to resale). Is that correct, or am I missing something?

Be sure and factor in the closing costs as well as that increases the price per point on small contracts quite a bit. For instance, $400 in closing costs divided by a 25 pt contract adds $16 to the price of each point. You would still be better off buying as many points as you can on the initial resale contract as it will save you money in the long run.

(Sorry, I don't know if I'm expressing myself well and hope this doesn't confuse the issue!)

I don't think a 25 point contract at BLT would get you more than about 3 nights every other year. Unless you are intending on adding more very soon. I would consider SSR or OKW. You could get almost twice as many points for the price and you could always add on BLT later. I assume you are not looking for perm of 25 points. Seems if you started with a less expensive resort you will get more nights and more points, and added on at BLT (or where ever your favorite ends up being.) You could get say a 45 - 60 point SSR or OKW for about 65$ a point. (You could possibly use them at BLT, based on 7th month window.) Unless you ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS book at 11 months, having some at a less expensive resort is not terrible, it is logical. It will also get you way more days that 25 points at BLT. Both with being able to afford more points and the per night costs.

Also consider USE YEAR, based on planning on adding on (possibly resale later too), some months are hard to find like Sept. others like Aug seem to have alot more options.

sweetdana, you bring up a good point about the booking window. I doubt we will ever get 11 months notice, honestly. The Navy has messed up our vacation since our last trip to Disney World (either they cut out any vacations due to staffing issues, or someone screwed up, like this year). We honestly just book on the fly, if we happen to get some time. It's tough, because we can never ask for vacation, or tell them when we need it, they let us know approx when it's going to be and about a month before we get the final schedule.

So, as such, I doubt we will be able to use an 11 month booking window for the next 10 years, because my husband is contracted with the Navy for another 10 years. I guess in that case, it doesn't matter what resort we buy in to, we will have to get reservations wherever we can get them, so I guess we might as well buy in to a cheap resort. WDYT?

We're not the pickiest people, anyway. We really prefer BLT (and it's the DVC we have been waiting for to buy in) because we can walk to the MK. We stayed at the Contemporary one time, and the location is so awesome, it really made an impression. But, we spend so little time in the hotel, that we kind of don't care.

If you don't see yourself using the home resort advantage, then I agree, buy for price.

However, DVC is not a great product for last minute trips so be sure that you understand this. Finidng things on short notice (and for DVC, short notice is a few months) can be difficult and certain times of the year, nearly impossible.

I am not sure what your actual timeframe is but if you can never book prior to a few months in advance, DVC may not be for you.

And, any cancellations less than 31 days prior to check in have special rules for points so be sure you understand all this.

Good luck!

I have to admit that I'm skeptical about the booking issues. I have heard that often about other things about Disney, like booking SoG, Cinderella's Royal Table and so on, and I've never had any trouble at all. Maybe because we're really flexible? We also are unable to travel in the popular seasons in general. It was easier when dh was in med school, but now they have to have someone covering the unit 24/7, and everyone wants Christmas off (etc) so they have to take turns, and some places just have a policy that summers and holidays are work days for everyone to avoid the grumbling. :)

If you are open on timing.. IE you are not looking for Christmas, or NYE.. Go with SSR. You can always book SSR out at 11 months, and trade if available at 7 months. (If 11 months window turns out to be an option.) I have never not been able to go. I have booked 5 days out and 11 months out. If you are open on dates a little it works better. IE I could go anywhere from may 20th through May 25th for say 5 nights.. You should be able to get something. You will not be able to book MAJOR holidays anywhere at 7 months. July 4th, christmas, easter week ect.

For the price/value and your situation, I think you will be pleasantly suprised. (With SSR or OKW.) Staying 2 nights (almost) at a possiblity of BLT, or AK, or SSR, for the price of 1 at garenteed BLT.
