I'm thinking of flying into MCO but I want to avoid the toll roads with my rental which roads can I use?

All you would really have to avoid is the Beachline expressway,I think one way to do that is to just find your way to McCoy rd which becomes Sand lake rd which leads directly to I-4,grab I-4 westbound towards Tampa and you hit WDW.If you want to avoid expressways keep going on Sand lake rd just past I-4 then turn left on 435 S Apopka vineland rd this street will lead you directly to the Hotel Plaza blvd entrance to WDW by DTD.

Well, it's very tricky at first, but doable. Not sure if it's worth saving the small amount of tolls you would pay taking SR 528 west to I-4 and then south to WDW.

However, if you want to give it a try, You would exit the airport on SR 436 (Semoran Blvd.) going north. Turn left at T.G. Lee/North Frontage Road (later becoming McCoy Rd). Follow this winding road until you dead end at S. Conway. Go left then a quick right at the signal (still McCoy Rd). Stay on McCoy Rd. (SR 482) as it becomes W. Sand Lake Rd. Continue on Sand Lake until it intersects with I-4. Once on I-4, go "West" (toward Tampa) until you reach your WDW exit. Frankly this is pretty complicated for someone who is from out of town and may only save you $3 or so on the Beachline (SR 528).

Gee, we just saved $1.75 but it took us an extra hour.

Really? Having driven Sand Lake (not to avoid the toll) it's a very congested road with LOTS of stop lights, traffic etc.

Makes no sense to me, but....

Not if you are spending hundreds of dollars or even several thousand dollars on your trip here.

I would think the amount saved in tolls will not be worth the headache and the gas wasted. JMO

For me its worth the two $1.25 tolls to avoid backroads at all costs and the traffice on them. Guess for me when I have spent several thousands of dollars on a trip I'm not going to scimp on $5.00 roundtrip tolls since that won't really make a difference in the price I have already paid (especially since I am a deluxe villa girl!). Have the same theory with valet parking - I'm on vacation so that is how we park.

Avoiding toll roads will cost you more in gas than just paying the tolls.

Google maps is lying.... trust me. My family lives down there.

And could you please take your "political" views to the Community Board?

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering about the traffic and stop lights on the non toll roads. We were in Orlando 3 years ago and did a lot of in driving in the area but never from the airport to WDW. We have stayed at a hotel in I-drive and the drive was good to WDW.

Compromise. Pay just one 75 cent toll.

North exit out of airport, left at first light (Lee-Frontage) becomes McCoy.
Little over a mile is next light (Conway), take left and left again to get on 528 (Beach Line) west.
Watch for toll signs and take what looks like exit ramp to pay toll in cash. Continue on to end of 528 and get on I-4 west (southwest).
Disney exits will appear soon.

Returning to airport via I-4 east to 528 east. Again watch for "exit ramp" to pay the 75 cent toll.
Get off 528 at its exit 9 (Tradeport). Left and cross under. Nice cheap gas station right here to top off at.
Get into middle lane facing north, 528 crosses over behind you (leaving gas station you may need to take another left or a U turn)
Required right onto McCoy. Little over a mile is 436 (Semoran). Turn right to re-enter airport.

Just take the toll road. It's something like $2.50, one way. Chances are good (very good), that the time/gas saved is worth much much more than $2.50. You can avoid the tolls on principle if you like, but it is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I'm with Brian. If you are on vacation and not actively working to earn money, then every single minute of your time is costing you something, so it is worth it to spend a little more money to make sure that you use as little of that time as possible doing things that are NOT enjoyable.

IME the traffic patterns in the Orlando tourism corridor almost guarantee that the toll route will be faster by as much as 200%. (By Toll Route, I mean the Greenway from MCO; Florida 417 out of the South Exit. The Beachline is not the best route to WDW at all; but it is the best route to Universal.) It isn't unusual to sit motionless on I-4 in the tourist corridor for as long as two hours if there is an accident.

You can also take the South Exit going past 417 staying on Boggy Creek Road, then make a right onto Boggy Creek Road which is a continuation and again right onto Boggy Creek Road, right onto 192 which will put you on the East side of Kissimmee. No tolls. The neighborhood may not look like much but we travel it all the time and never feel uncomfortable in the area, and we are from a rural area. It takes us about 30 min or so but we usually arrive around 9 am and stay on the east side of Rt 4 in a vacation rental.

The only problem with this as a route to WDW is driving on 192. From Hoagland Rd. at Mile Marker 15, west to about Mile Marker 5 (west of Sherberth) Irlo Bronson has a ridiculous number of lights -- and rubberneckers -- so IMO it should be avoided except in the wee hours or unless you have business on that road.

I'm particularly wary of driving on 192 around the time that the parks begin to open, around lunch, or at earlier park closing times, because those are the times that the tourists are most likely to be cruising for food and/or stores along there. A couple of weeks ago I was going from CSR to the Publix on Orange Lake Blvd. at 7:45 am, and I took World Dr./192 to get there. By the time I got close to Sherberth, traffic was getting heavier, so on my way back at around 9 am I bailed and went north on Sherberth, because it had taken me as long to go that two and half miles on Eastbound 192 as it had to go the entire distance at 7:45. (Once up Sherberth onto WDW property it was clear sailing back to the resort.)

That "BeautiVacation" stretch of 192 is a VERY slow road; from MCO most of the time it is more than worth it to me to spring the (cumulative) $3.25, take 417 and get off on Osceola instead.

I also try very hard to avoiding driving anywhere on the congested part of I-Drive, which would be anywhere from the Beachline interchange north to Kirkham Rd. I-4 is usually fine anywhere south of 192, but I now get off it north of there until I get up as far as Maitland -- I've been stuck for hours TOO many times. (The problem with I-4 in Orlando is that there is no room for emergency vehicles to get up there and clear wrecks quickly, so it takes hours to get them out of the way, and there are a LOT of wrecks in that tourist corridor.)

You've already paid for the roads via the tax on gas, and all those taxes by picking up the rental car at the airport.

The toll roads were built with bond money and the bonds are paid back with toll money. No taxes were spent to build our toll roads. That's why they have the tolls.

BobK/Orlando

Per gasbuddy.com the tax on gas in Florida is 52.8 cents per gallon.

I hope those tax dollars only go to support Florida's roads and are not siphoned off for non-highway use!

BobK thanks for the clarification on the toll roads! I guess once the bonds are paid off the tolls will be removed, and maintenance will be paid out of gas tax revenue.

Alrighty then...can we please move away from anything that remotely looks like 'politics' and get on with the business of pure transportation?? No need for this type discussion.
