LOL have you seen this commercial for Universal Orlando? It's hilarious. The Disney fanatic in me is a little upset about it (you KWIM), but it's pretty funny.

I have been banned from grop...I mean hugging them

It sure does draw a clear distinction between the two parks, the same sort of distinction that could be drawn between Winnie the Pooh and Bratz.

I love that commercial. It has me  everytime I see it... and I love Disney as much as the next person. But I gotta admit that Universal Studios Orlando has some very creative, if not pointed, advertising that is quite appealing on an adult level.

Curious... why would this commercial be considered to "stoop so low?" It seems that Universal is simply trying to position themselves as an alternative to magic, pixie dust and princesses. Sort of "Not the Disney!" if you will.

I don't like it. The kids are snotty, and even my DD 10 said the same thing when she saw it. I hate the least bit of negative advertising or commercials where they compare a competitor unfavorably. And the whole thing about going to bed at 8 or going to bed early -- what's that all about?

However, I do love their one commercial where they have the heavy black woman clutching two little kids to her, shall we say, abundant bosom while going down a water ride! Cracks me up. :rotfl:

There is a long tradition of the second-place supplier in a market oscillating between presenting themselves as good-in-their-own-right, deliberately avoiding acknowledging even the existence of the market leader, and presenting themselves as the alternative to the market leader. There are advantages to both approaches. What is interesting in this case is that Universal Studios used to employ the first approach, trying to build themselves up as a completely distinct destination from WDW. They hoped that guests would come to Orlando to visit Universal Studios instead of WDW. Now, they're clearly acknowleding that that approach didn't work, and so they're trying to get guests to visit Universal Studios in addition to WDW. It's not necessarily a bad approach, but it does indicate that their original intent didn't pan out. No surprise there, really.

Disney doesn't have to put down other parks for attendance....at least I haven't seen any commercials that do.

That's because they already ARE the front runner.

I am not a fan of negative campaigning, in any venue, whether it be political, advertising, whatever.

If you have to put down something or someone else in order to make yourself or your product seem "better" then fix yourself or your product, because that's really the problem.

I would probably laugh at the commercial if I saw it, because the premise is amusing. But it would not compel me to go to Universal again. I have been underwhelmed by Universal each time I have been there...just not the same magic.

I feel the same way. I'll chuckle at it but it doesn't make me think "Oh, this time will be so much more entertaining than last time" or that suddenly their rides won't all make me vomit.

IMO it's not even negative campaigning. They are being funny about it, but the real message is that they have something different. Something for the boys and tomboys out there.

Something I know I have seen people talk about here. People admitting that Disney is severly lacking in anything to attract people not into princesses and Pooh.

The market leader never does. Have you ever seen Coca Cola mention Pepsi in an advertisement? Yet, Pepsi is most remembered for its Coke vs. Pepsi taste tests.

:thumbsup2 ITA! They are identifying themselves with a very overlooked portion of the theme park market. Nothing wrong with that.

I love that commercial. I don't think it is bothering Disney in the least.

I recently attended the Monster Makeup show at Universal. During the show, the MC was joking with a kid in the audience. He told the kid that he wasn't at Disney so he didn't have to be nice to him. The kid and the audience thought it was hysterical. I loved it. I'm a huge WDW fan, but I can see the humor in these things. Sometimes, Disney can be just a little to sweet. Universal is a refreshing change.

I don't understand why this bothers people so much. I am a major Diet Coke fan, yet I love the commercial with Jackie Chan where they put a can of Diet Coke in to double for Pepsi during the commercial shoot. The Diet Coke gets smashed. It's funny!

Liking things other than Disney or thinking things that lightly poke fun at Disney doesn't make you evil or disloyal to Disney. It makes you human.
