I'll be vacationing in DLP, staying at the Disneyland Hotel, in 3 months. I've been trying to learn French from instruction tapes but I have never had any luck learning languages and I'm not doing well this time either.

Am I going to have a difficult time here if I only speak English?

You'll have no problems there, they all speak English

In DLRP? Not at all. Try to learn basics in French such as please, thankyou, hello, goodbye as a courtesy, but you can get by solely in English. You might like to learn 'May I speak English?' but it isn't strictly necessary.

As others have stated you'll not have any problem.
We find a few pleasantries of merci and S'il vous plait go a long way :goodvibes

I go with every intention of trying to improve my French. I start with "Bonsiour" and always get the same reply "English Madame ?" :rotfl:

I don't speak any French at all (but luckily, I have DH who does speak French and if need be, I'll just point to him and he'll take over lol) - but yes, I agree, merci, bonjour and s'il vous plait's more than enough :) .

My French is virtually non-existant, I know the please and thank you stuff and a few words I think were French but not totally sure, too much Handy Manny means they could well have been Spanish.

So don't worry the CM's there have very good language skills and English is a very popular second language.

you'll be fine. i can speak enough french to get by but at dlp you don't really need to know much french at all!

I believe that the official language of the hotels is English, so you won't have any problems there. At the parks, some of the shows alternate performances in English and in French, and others have headphones where you can just choose your language. You shouldn't have too much trouble with not knowing French!

Thanks to all of you. I really hate that I'm going there and being rude by not being able to converse at all (it's not like anyone there will know that I've been trying to learn). However, it's comforting to know that I'll get by because the people there are smart enough to know two languages.

Hi Pakey!

Are you going to Paris also?

I went for the first time in Jnauary (been to DLP but never the actual city before) and I was worried in advance as I learnt Latin, german and Spanish at school but know hardly any french, as I felt bad about having no knowledge of the language.

Even in the centre of the city the people are very helpful and welcoming, and I'd get one french menu and one in english and then try in my awful french to read off the french menu, it was always met with a smile and a little french lesson from my waiter/waitress.

Nobody will be offended by you, but I always think it helps to show you are aware you are in a french speaking country and to try a bit.

As for in the parks themselves though, it may aswell be England (or the US) people know before you open your mouth that English will come out! The only french I've had spoken to me is a couple of 'bonjours' at the park entrance in the morning, and that's because its directed at the crowds walking through. Honestly, you won't notice its france!

the most useful french other than pleasantries - sortie - it means exit and will save you from getting confused at dumbo.
also, if you're near the end of a queue keep an eye on the cast member saying 'une personne' or 'deux personnes' as it means the group at the front is too big to move onto the ride together so they want to fill a car or whatever.
and of course 'bonne journee' means 'have a nice day'.
cast members are usually fine about minimal french but you get better service if you're apologetic about it than if you try and get your point across by yelling.
