I am trying to decide if I want to do a split stay & extend our vacation. Because we didn't have much snow this year, the last day of school is going to be earlier than we had anticipated. We could add some days to the beginning of our trip and I was thinking that a split stay might be in order!! :):):):):)

So, let's say I book the split stay and something prevents us from being able to go to the first part of the stay. Sometimes my job makes June travel difficult. If I cancel before the 5 day cancellation deadline, will I lose anything besides the room and the things that are booked during part 1 of the trip? If I book a split stay and start making my FP+ reservations 60 days prior to the 1st day of the 1st leg of the trip - will I lose my fastpasses that are scheduled during the 2nd half of the trip if I cancel part 1 of the trip?

I just don't want to make things more difficult for myself. If I simply wait to book the additional days (until I am positive that we can go) I may not be able to get the resort that I want....and I am not very good at waiting to plan :o

I believe you would be fine after you hit the 30 day public FP+ window.

Unless I'm mistaken, cancelling your resort reservation (either of the stays) won't cancel anything else you have booked in either stay - ADRs, FPs, etc. They aren't "connected" like that.

Correct, if you are within the 30 day window for offsite FP, yours won't be erased if you make any changes to your reservation :).
