If I cancel one night, will MS put the points back in the right place?

Hi there,

I currently have a reservation at my home resort for 2012 using a combination of banked (9), 2012 UY (160), and 2013 borrowed points (44). This is for 5 nights, a total of 213 points.

If I were to shave one night off the reservation, would MS know to put the 2012 UY points back so that they would be unrestricted and available for banking later? I wouldn't want them to get my borrowed points stuck in 2012 if I can avoid it. I would most likely shave off the first night of 48 points, or the last night of 39 points.

Would it matter to them if I made the reservation in two calls? During the first call I booked 4 nights and then I added on 1 night during the second call.

Thanks for your advice!

They should automatically take out the 2012 points. Nevertheless, it is important that you specifically request that when you do the cancellation because the MS rep may not be up on DVC rocket science and if he takes out borrowed points you will then be spending more phone calls (probably more than one) to get the problem resolved. It matters not that you made two calls since the points come from the same use year and the reservation despite the two calls is deemed one.

Since each night was booked using specific points, I would make sure that you verify that the banked and borrowed points are used for whatever remaining nights you have reserved and that the 2012 points are what was freed up to be reused or banked at your discretion. I would verify the status of the points before hanging up and also verify that status online at DVCmember.com immediately after you hang up. If there is any discrepancy, call back and correct it ASAP.

That being said, MS will usually try to preserve the points that could still be banked - but I think it's best for members to be proactive to make sure MS accomplishes what you are looking for. Depending on how the points were distributed for the original reservation, it may require a little reallocation to make sure the banked and borrowed points are the ones used before any current (2012) points.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the reassurance that I should be able to get my 2012 UY points back in their happy place :). I will make sure I am clear about which points to reinstate and then if the CM seems confused, I think I will ask for another one, or hang up and try again.

Clearly I need more points, and then this borrowing thing would be a moot point ;).

I don't think you'll run into a confused CM, but it is possible. I've made about 25 DVC reservations and never had a CM that was confused by which points to use/reinstate. If you hang up, you will be in "no man's land" as your reservation will already be modified and you will no longer have immediate input as to which points to use.

In general, I think it is a good practice to confirm point status for multiple UY's after every reservation. It doesn't take long and is a good way to make sure that you and MS are on the same page before you hang up. As drusba noted, if you have to clear it up after the initial call it can be a bit of a chore.
