For those of you not in on the joke
Shortly after Michael Eisner was hired by Disney, the studio was getting ready to release an animated movie titled Basil of Baker Street. Eisner found the title confusing (he had to be told about the reference to Sherlock Holmes) and ordered it changed. In a move of stunning creativity, they came up with the current The Great Mouse Detective.
Naturally, such an insipid title quickly became the butt of jokes throughout the entire company. The most famous of which was the All Titles to be Retitled memo that sailed throughout the companys e-mail system (good ole Sperrylink) and even found itself being published in the Los Angeles Times.
The memo claimed that to avoid future confusion, all classic Disney films would be retitled: Snow White was to become Seven Little Men Help a Girl, Pinocchio would become A Puppet Becomes a Boy, Cinderella became Girl Losses Shoe, Finds Prince and everyones favorite, Jungle Book became A Boy, A Bear, and a Big Black Cat.
Whats less well known is that the ridicule didnt stop some further dumb behavior. All throughout the development of the Disney/MGM Studios, the premier ride was known as Great Moments at the Movies. Well, guess what. Near the opening date of the park, Michael Eisner took his teenage son on a tour.
The story goes that Eisners son was presented with a model of Grumans Chinese Theater and told it was to be the home of Great Moments at the Movies. The kid asked if it was a ride. Eisner was horrified if his son was confused by the rides name then surely there will be millions of tourists confused as well. Another horror was in the making! It must be prevented!
Thus, The Great Movie Ride was renamed so that people as dumb as Eisners kid would know it was a ride.
