If DLRP was DLR-England/Essex?

My Mum asked me an interesting question today.

How do I think I’d feel about DLRP if it had been built in Essex like the rumours were all those years ago.

It’s hard to know!

What do you think? Would you like it as much/more/less?

I think I'd definitely visit more often, but it would lose it's magic for me a bit.

I think part of the magic for me is planning the trip, staying on-site and making a holiday of it.

If it was just a few junctions down the M25 I would end up visiting it like I do Chessington, Thorpe Park etc.... great for a day out but not really anything special.

If it was built in the UK I fear the park would have suffered with a loss of table service resturants and only one on-site hotel being built.

I think it would have turned out like Hong Kong Disneyland, a small park with just the one theme park aimed at day trip visitors.

England was out of the running very early on. I believe the last two candidates were Spain (Barcelona?) and Paris.

Spain would have been pretty good because it could have been combined with a beach holiday. The weather would have also been a lot better!

If it was in Spain you'd imagine all the rides would be English only. That would have been great. As others have said, I'd probably visit too often and part of the magic for me is going abroad.

My preference would have been Spain but I can understand why they went for Paris (prestige, central location for target markets, transport infrastructure).

I believe they couldn't build it in Spain because of the geology (the rock was too soft)?

The first plans for a European Disney park appeared in 1972, but it was not until Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983 that Disney started looking again at international expansion.

By 1984 approximately 1,200 possible European locations had been looked at, and by the following year that had been reduced to four. Two in France and two in Spain. The Spanish sites were both located on the Mediterranean so the climate would have been similar to Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
One of the Spanish sites was Costa Calida, where Paramount Pictures is planing to open their Murcia Theme Park.

The other French site considered was in Toulon near Marseille in the south of France, which also has a similar climate to Florida. But after some test digs geological problems found there would have made construction very dificult and expensive.

So the second French site near Marne-la-Vallée became the prefered option and this was where the park was built. The main reason apart from the huge subsidies given by the French government why the park was built in Marne-la-Vallée was becasue the location is about a four-hour drive away for 68 million people and about a two-hour flight time for a further 300 million.

I can't remember now which sites were looked at in the UK, but I know one of them was around the London area, just outside the M25. I would not be surprised if it is where Warner Brothers have build their new Harry Potter Studio Tour London (not a theme park) near Watford or where Legoland Windsor was built.

You tend to find that if one company does a lot of reseach about a location for a theme park then drops that site for one reason or another then another company comes along and buys the land and builds their own there.

A UK Disney park would have been fun, but to be honest I'm rather glad it did not happen.

Philippe Gas, the Chairman and CEO of Euro Disney SAS who operate Disneyland Paris said in an interview a few years ago that he would like to see mini Disney Villages being build in other cities in Europe.

The concept he explained to the press were mini out of town lesuire parks based on the Disney Village in Paris. Each would have their own Cafe Mickey for character meet and greets with other Disney themed resurants and Disney Stores located there. So Disney Village London, Disney Village Madrid, Disney Village Berlin etc.

Who knows if this idea will ever happen, but nothing more has been said of the idea.

I'm glad it's in Paris. I doubt I would go anymore often if it had been built in Essex, and I think it might just have turned into another version of Alton Towers, where it doesn't always feel like a family theme park.

They were proposing to built it in Rainham, I know this as it's about 10 minutes from where I live. I don't think it would have worked in England but I know it would make working for Disney a lot easier. Right now it's almost impossible. :confused3

Your right it was the central location for their target markets and the transport infrastructure. Plus the huge subsidies being offered by the French government helped too.

Officlay Spain was ruled out due to the then poor transport infrastructure and because Spain could not afford the subsidies the French were offering due to Spain hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona (which fixed the transport infrastructure problems)

There were also rumors that the terrorist organisation ETA scared Disney off building a Spanish park, after they threatened terrorist attacks against any Disney park built in Spain.

Would not had made a big difference from Italy, i would had had to plan a visit abroad anyway..

Think it would had been a little worse weather wise even though Paris is not the warmest place in the world, is it??

im so glad it wasnt in england and I hope if it had been it would have DLR - uk/great britain not england!!!!

i dont think it would have worked, personally i think it should have stayed as Euro Disney also...

to me its more magical taking my girls to another country...they think its where mickey lives and thats the name of the country - Disneyland!

i think it would, as other people have said, been a much smaller scale, one hotel etc...

I would have gone to spain happily but im so glad its in France :)

I think I would have visited much more often but I agree that part of the magic is being in the disney bubble for the whole holiday, just taking day trips probably wouldn't be quite the same.

We have been discussing this very thing this week. On the one hand it would be brilliant if it were closer BUT we think it would very much lose some of the magic of going on holiday to Disneyland, and if it were close, and we could go every few weeks/months etc. it would lose it's special quality I think! So I am happy where it is.

Although I wish it were in a country that was strict on it's smoking rules!

Good question! :thumbsup2

It would be great to pop there for a Disney fix, but wouldn't be the same as leaving the country for a proper holiday! Plus it'd be hard to justify staying overnight.

Spain would be nice (hot!) but living 10 mins from St Pancras it's much easier to get to in Paris!

Well, going by all other models I imagine really it would have been DLRL (London)

Anyway. I like it being in France and I agree that it gives more of an excuse for a longer break.

But I recon we'd have pulled it off OK and that I'd have still been if a fan. :) Would certainly make a Disney fix cheaper between trips to the US parks. And with not needing to find rail/airfare we could really take advantage of flash sales and AP discounts!

AND - think of all the international share dealing fees we'd have saved between us! ;)

The only was is essex Disney lol!

I like that its abroad I would hate to have it close going too often would ruin the magic for me!

Interesting question - I'm very glad this didn't happen. It simply wouldn't have felt European and I don't think it would have catered well to other languages and visitors from elsewhere in Europe.
I think that the French feel really adds to what I love about DLP - I don't think this would have been as authentic in Essex or in Spain (the links to French fairytales, the architecture of the castle etc)
The key word from previous posts for me is prestige - I can't picture a uk version having the same magic. My reasons are more to do with culture than proximity - this needed to be a european park and the uk wouldn't have achieved that so well.

I think I agree with everyone, but I wonder if that's just because that's what we're all used to. After all, Carrie_Cat lives close to DLP and pops there every other week or so.

Wouldn't it be amazing if the UK actually had a massive tourist attraction that also had Disney magic :goodvibes

Anyway, it would never happen, horrible weather here, which is also why I think we all like going abroad ;)
