Saturday morning, Fox TV is airing Steel Magnolias because nothing sports worthy to broadcast and sporting event re-reuns are probably leaving a rotten egg taste in the mouth of viewers.....Is the best female ensemble movie a Easter movie ?

It is definitely an Easter movie! I had this discussion with my (very uninterested) husband today when I saw that it was on TV! I think of it every Easter. Watched it endlessly during college, so it always reminds me of my college friends too.

....well.....that makes two husbands with egg on their face.....

I love how it kind of takes place at every holiday, but I would definitely give Easter the nod, both because of the "wrap-around" effect of starting and ending the movie at Easter and because of how much the themes of the movie follow Easter themes - death and birth, sacrifice, redemption, hope, life goes on...

I do not consider it an Easter movie.

My first job was at a movie theater, I started around Nov-Dec '89. Steel Magnolias was one of the movies, along with Christmas Vacation, The Little Mermaid, and War of the Roses. Don't ask me why I remember that, but I do!

Since I associate the movie with my first job that was around the winter holidays, I don't consider it an Easter movie. However, I can see why some consider it to be since it starts and ends at Easter.

I see your point. I think thematic reasons are why I see Die Hard is a Christmas movie. There’s a family that would like to spend the holiday together, but forces beyond their control are keeping them apart. Eventually, they are able to bypass those obstacles and reunite for Christmas. It’s like a Hallmark movie, only with bombs and terrorists! 😉
