If DD is having a reaction to new laundry detergent

and took a shower and I re-washed all of her clothes twice, how long until the rash goes away?

I'm also debating whether its laundry detergent since its on her face as well, but I thought I'd try the detergent route first.

One of my kids got what we called a "Surf" rash - from Surf detergent. By the time he was to go the dermatologist, the rash was gone. Were her sheets washed in the new detergent? That would account for the face rash. I'd give it a few days before calling the doctor. It's unusually warm here (rather suddenly) so I would imagine there are some cases of heat rash around here. Could it be that?

Just FYI, we've had two viral rashes around here..........one with Fifth's Disease and one that is just being called "a viral rash"............some kids are vomiting with it, some aren't.

I didn't wash the bed linens this weekend. I washed them tonight in my good ol' Gain.

Its been cool here the past few days so I don't think its a heat rash. It doesn't look like a traditional rash either. There are no raised bumps, its just blotchy redness.

Well whatever it is, it seems to be spreading. I'll see how it looks in the morning after another dose of benadry.

Did you wash the towels in that same detergent? If she just took a shower and dried off with the towel then she would be having the reaction on her face too!

Yes, blotchy, that's what we've seen. If her cheeks are bright red like she's been slapped, it might be Fifth's.

The other rash is a little more pronounced, and itches. Fifth's doesn't generally.

LOL I actually did think of the towel thing before the shower. And luckily I'm a procrastinator at putting towels and wash clothes away so the ones that were washed in the other detergent are still in the laundry room.

Hopefully benedryl will get her through the night and atleast tomorrow morning at school. (WESTEST at school this week). I hate to run to the doctor for a simple rash but if I cant home remedy it, she might need something stronger.

The school nurse will be able to tell right away if it is Fifth disease. Is it itchy? Where else is it on her body?

DS has recently had fifths rash. He also has allergies so my first thought was allergic rash. It always seemed to show up after playing outside. It did start as a red rash on his face. Then red blotchy patches on his forearms and calves/shins. It always fades while he sleeps and then comes out on some other body part when he plays outside. Today I noticed it on his hands. It now looks lacey. We were told the rash could come and go for 3 weeks...sometimes more. I took him to the allergy clinic...go figure it's a virus. He was never sick. I think it's mostly contagious before the rash. I was actually relieved that I didn't have to identify a specific allergy. Good luck...hope you get it figured out.

The rash was still there this morning. It seems to gotten worse on her face. It's raised patches like hives now. I'll make her an appointment if its still bad this afternoon/evening.

I recently started breaking out in hives on my feet and elbows. It got bad after I wore socks to bed. I narrowed it down to the laundry detergent DH bought:Cheer fresh linen scent. I always buy the regular kind.

It was really bad on the tops of my feet and ankles. Then a little on the knees and elbows. Mine did take a few days to go away.

could be--I have an all over body reaction just from the scent in close proximity on my scalp and face as well as the rest of my body.

I use free and clear detergents only.

I did not always have this allergy--in fact I didn't have reactions until I was a teenager. Any reactions earlier were probably very minor.

I also did not realize my hayfever allergies until I was a pre-teen either.

Give her some Benadryl and see if that relieves symptoms.

You may wish to have her allergy tested. But simply not washing her things in the same detergent will help. (Conversely--you can wash some of her things in it again when her symptoms begin to disappear to see if they reappear).

DD6 had a similar rash/hives a few weeks ago. It started out on her legs, then her stomach and back. Gave her Benadryl that night and it got better. It showed up the next day again and gave her Benadryl again. Same thing the next day. I ended up taking her to the DR thinking it was an allergic reaction to something, but the Dr said it was viral. She gave me Zyrtec to give to DD and said it could last 2 -3 weeks. After about 10 days, it was gone.

Just curious about the rash. Have you figured out what is causing it? I'm interested because my DS is going on 3 weeks for his viral rash (fiifths). It's not as red and blotchy but still can been seen if he has been outside playing. I'm going to take him to the ped Mon if he still has it. Hope your DD is doing better.

I always thought a washer rinsed clothes. Meaning- there was no laundry detergent left on the clothes after the rinse cycle. Is that not the case? Sounds pretty stupid Im sure but thats what I always believed lol...

Also- an allergic reaction can happen at any time- even if she has been using the same bar soap for years- one day she could react to it...doesnt have to be an all time thing.

Years ago, when I was a teenager, I ended up with a rash on my face, body and extremities which was worse in the AM. Went to the dermatologist, who diagnosed it as poison ivy. Seems that the nutty lady next door would burn her yard waste (which was illegal in our town, but that's another story! ), which probably included some poison ivy leaves, and the oil from it got into the smoke and onto my sheets and I slept on my stomach, hence the rash on my face as well, and hence the reason it was worse in the morning...because I had been laying on it all night.

My mother washed and dried the sheets inside instead of hanging them on the clothesline, and it disappeared after a few days.

The detergent is rinsed off, but the scent remain on the clothes.

I am allergic to the perfumes used in laundry soap. I can tell if someone uses tide instantly. That one is the worst culrprit for me.
