If Covid-19 hits the theme parks...

now that Disney Tokyo is closing will that have an impact on anyone's thinking if we see similar levels of virus to Japan in the US

My company shocked us all yesterday by canceling any international business travel and any conference/event of more than 100 people. It scared me enough to start rethinking things. I would think the next few weeks will be ok, but we’ll see what April brings...

I think @LaurenT is right, this coronavirus might be more deadly but the flu is more widespread and so it kills more people overall. On a somewhat optimistic note, maybe flu deaths will be lower this year because people are taking extra hygienic/sanitary precautions to avoid the coronavirus.

I thought that this information, taken from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/, was interesting. With such a small sample size, a higher percentage death rate sounds so scary, but it does not mean that those percentages can be extrapolated to the general population. The vast majority of deaths have been in the elderly, the already ill, or smokers. I'm not saying everyone else is immune, but as this spreads around the world, I'm willing to bet it will be considered to be more of a bad cold.
Still not something to celebrate, as it is another thing to worry about, but also not something so serious that it will shut down whole cities and theme parks.

Came here to see what people were saying about Covid-19... surprised there is not much more talk...

This week will be very telling as the U.S. cases are starting and have first death.. if it starts to spread without any positive indications it is not as deadly as seeing elsewhere, things are going to get REALLY difficult.

As people here are saying "I'll still go anyway..." THAT is what causes the spread of the virus.. everyone keeps going on with their plans despite not feeling well. So you know plenty of people will be contagious and still go to Disney, and Disney being a hub for people from all over will greatly inflate the spread of the virus.

Disney will not have a choice but to close if this continues to progress... they will have to protect their employees and cannot be held responsible for fostering an outbreak. Also they may not have enough business to operate anyway.

There will be no vaccine anytime soon, and even if one gets made, it will not be available in sufficient quantities to vaccinate the majority of the population. It will also probably not be cheap.

I hope for financial sake, that this gets under control soon. But I am not planning any vacations, etc, until have a clearer picture of what is going to happen.

There are at least a dozen threads about it if you’re looking for more discussion. Search Coronavirus.

I am not concerned. The data we have don’t suggest anything to make me consider cancelling anything. Yes, there is a higher mortality rate than the flu, but that number is still hovering around 2%. The vast majority of those cases confined to a single province in China, and from what I understand the data are very similar to what is seen from flu in that area.

Traveling to Disney isn’t what is going to spread the virus. We live in a Global society. People will continue to travel.

the media has hyped this unnecessarily, hence the frenzy to close everything.

H1N1 didn’t close the parks. It killed over 12,000 people in the US. This virus has a lower death rate right now than H1N1 did at this point in its development.

I'm altering my behavior for awhile and avoiding nonessential crowded places. Just until treatment protocols are worked out better and health care providers have time to get up to speed. I really feel sorry for the health care providers. It seems unkind to carry on as normal when things will be really not normal for them.

Will they close the parks? Will you still go if they don’t?
I have a trip planned for the end of April ... I have a feeling we’ll see the virus across most of the country by then ...

Closing - or not - the parks has nothing to do with our decision - have decided that our trip can be rescheduled, so not worth any chance for us to be in that huge a gathering with national/international people with all the warnings plus the unknown. Was to go end of April also for 10 nights.

this! I am so sick of hearing "coronavirus crisis" from new agencies. This is NOT a crisis.

Really?? And you can be so sure of that how?? To me, that is a big issue, statements made that are emphatically 'true' when no one is 'sure' of anything! We need to all do what we, ourselves, feel is best for us and let others do the same.

Unless the airlines shut down and the parks close, we will be going on our trip in 76 days. Not really concerned about Covid-19. We all get the flu shot and if there is a vaccine for it before we go and available then we will get it.

Alot of ppl don't get the flu shot.. and more die from that every year than projected corvid-19. Not taking the flu seriously kills so many. Yet people are going nuts over this because there is no shot. Wash your hands try not to touch your face and live your life. If you get sick take care of yourself. I think they said 80% of confirmed cases have now been over it and are better. Elderly and people with immune issues will always have issues with any sickness.

Please stop freaking out and just live life. My husband is in the medical field and all he can do it try to calm people everyday. If anyone should be worried it's them and there family. I would have it so fast.

We have a trip in late May/early June that we're looking forward to. I hope that it isn't disrupted, but I'm also aware that this virus is uncharted territory and that anything could happen. This is the last time I rent points to pay for hotel nights on our trip. Nonrefundable, of course. And I was so sure at the time that nothing could happen to stop us from going... Short of an official government travel advisory and/or park closure, we will go, but I don't enjoy this uncertainty and wish I knew I could cancel if I needed to.
