If a waitlist comes through w/in 30 days and you have a different resort booked already, do they switch out the reservation on those points, or is there a chance the points used to book the original, nonwaitlisted resort would go into holding?

They are supposed to reuse the same points, but mistakes do occur. I had a waitlist come thru in the 30 day window, and MS used all new points and put the original points that were used into holding.

A phone call to member services, and a conversation with a Supervisor fixed the points, but not all situations are handled correctly.

i am very new to this but I think that there is an option where they can replace or just book new. I saw this option on my most recent booking. But I think if you dont choose the 'replace' option, you will have two separate reservations and if you cancel one, those points will go into the holding account if cancelled.

Correct. This is why it is mandatory that if you select a seven day before expiration for your waitlist, you select "replace existing reservation," unless you really are wanting to get an additional room.

Also why it is important to check and confirm your points balance online any time a reservation is modified, including for a waitlist filling.

What about if the wait list uses fewer points than the original reservation you are replacing?

This happened to me yesterday, just outside the 30 day window. I replaced a 2 bedroom with a studio. In my case there was no problem with the returned points, but if it had been within the 30 days, would those extra points go into holding?

Yes.

I thought it cancels the first reservation also and now I have 2 rooms for Christmas Day and only need 1.

It depends on how you set up the waitlist. If you set it up to "replace an existing reservation" and it didn't, they should cancel the extra reservation and rescue your unused points from holding. A supervisor could do this if you have proof (i.e. A screenshot of your waitlist before it filled.)

If you didn't set it up that way, it's on you to cancel the original reservation if the waitlist fills. If you are inside 30 days, the points will indeed go into holding.
