Someone recently mentioned buying dog (pet) tags for kids that can be engraved with their names and address.

I just ordered military style "dog tags" for my kids online. They come in sets of 2 tags and 2 chains - one long one for around the neck and one short one to hang from a packpack, etc. You can have them custom engraved with whatever info. you want, so I put their names and my and DH's cell #'s. There was no tax or shipping, so I got 2 sets of 2 tags plus chains for $14. Well worth the peace of mind. :)

That's a great idea! I'm sure you could even put medical inf on them, such as allergies, (I've looked int those medic alert bracelets and they cost $$)
Thanks again for a great tip! :)

We bought our tags at a local pet store, they engraved them while we waited. The kids love them, they chose the neat little shapes and colours, and I just looped them onto their shoes. They have their names and our cell number on them. Lots of people have commented that it is a great idea.

You can also try childidbracelets.com. They have bracelets instead of necklaces, and they have designs on the top and the info underneath, so not just anyone can read your info off of your child. Good luck!

I thought that I would share my idea, I love it and use it all the time.

I take my son to the Department of Motor Vehicles and get him a state ID. Which lists his picture, adescription, name address, blah, blah, blah......I think that I only paid $5 for it. When we go on vacation I tape to the back a piece of paper listing where we are staying (POR), both mine and my DH cell phone numbers (in case one is out of range - two different providers) and an emergency number of another relative. My dad lives in Fl so when we are at WDW I use his number even though he lives 2 1/2 hours away he will still be reachable if something were to happen. I then stick it in my childs pocket and explain to him what to do if he gets lost. When we get to the park I point out very obviously a cast member while pointing out their name tag.

Thankfully, we have never had a problem and hopefully never will, but at least we have the provisions set up to try and make the best of a bad situation.

PS.....my son love it, being able to say he has a drivers license.

***For those whose states may not so such things, you could always take a current photo of child put it in a photo sized laminate card with the info on the back and stick it together.

Hope this helps, it is always scary being in a strange place and getting lost.

My local police station does an id card for free. Picture, name, address, description, birth marks and finger prints. I would think a lot of police stations do this.

We use a small plastic circular tag that hooks on a child's shoe or sandal from "kidtagz dot com". The designs on the outside are cute and on the inside I have my DH and my cellphone numbers, our home number and in addition, for my DD, listed that she has a peanut allergy. The company has two sizes, but I like the smaller tags better (less cumbersome).

Ordered these for our daughter just for this trip. They came a few weeks ago and I am very happy with them. Gives me some sort of peace of mind . They are bright pink (blue too) and can fit onto any shoe so you don't even have to think about putting it on a wrist or neck every day. Totally my style..low maintenance! Also the info is inside of the actual tag so it is not out in the open for anyone to see. That way your child can point out the info if and when he/she is lost. Also thought it was a great buy because I think some of the money (maybe all?) went to a charitable org. :goodvibes

we just used the "Id On Me" (from idonme.com) and they were great. The kids didn't like wearing them as bracelets, so they wore them on their ankles (over the socks).

I LOVE this idea!! My kids don't have laces or velcro on their shoes so the shoesid on the shoes doesn't work for us.

Also, the tags can be purchased in the pet department or by the check outs at every walmart I've ever been to. That way no one else is getting your child's info. There are also ID cards that you can purchase in office supplies that have all sorts of info for kids. You get full sheets (product made by Avery) so you can update the info as your child needs it.

the idonme has a little paper that you write the info on, then it folds up and goes in the waterproof compartment. It comes with extra papers, to update info as needed!

My son wore the idonme bracelet for the entire trip this June. He gave it the ultimate test by wearing it at water parks and slides, digging in the sand at the beach and spilling a lot of food on it. The info paper stayed nice and dry. The only problem was that the velcro started to wear off and come undone after about a week. It never fell off, but the end of the strap would flap around and bother him. I think next year I will have him wear the elastic band that comes with the id instead of the velcro!

Hey, we tried them out for the first time today at Sesame Place. I took them off the necklaces and used safety pins to pin them to the kids' bathing suits. They were perfect! We still kept a close watch on them but the tags gave me peace of mind just in case. Oh, and I remembered to bring my cell phone so I could answer it if someone found a kid and called me on it. :)

ALASKAMOM don't count on using anything other than a MEDICAL ALERT tag to put any type of emergency medical info on, as a paramedic I would never look for or waste time reading just anything...I would look for a medical alert tag though right away! It's more expensive but definitely cheaper than a life-threatening mistake that could be avoided but using the proper way to identify any medical problems on a child in an emergency situation.

Here's another great ID-idea for little ones. It's called Who's Shoes. I can't type the website address in here because I am too new, but if you Google, Who's Shoes, you'll see what I mean or you can PM me. I haven't gone through the whole thread, but if it was mentioned already I apologize in advance.

We use the ID ME program from Billy Bear 4 Kids. Its a free easy to use program that helps you make photo ID cards with any personalized info you want. I print one for my daughter to keep in her pocket and also print some extras for my husband and I to carry with us.

Here is the link to that program if anyone is interested.
