We told our dds we would get a dog when we moved. Any ideas?

Looking for a small breed and good with children

How about a Jack Russell. Small, tough, and alot of energy. My DS just got one. I must say that he is quite adorable!!!!!! Not alot of maintainence to this breed.

Cocker Spaniels are good with kids

Shelties (I had these when I was a kid and they are awesome pals)

Yes, check out the AKC website, that's where we started when searching for the perfect breed for us.

We ended up with an adorable Shih Tzu, who has been great with every child he's met! Only thing with really small dogs, like toy breeds, is that often children underestimate their own strength and could hurt one, so an adult should always be present when playing - but I figure MOST dogs and children need to be supervised when playing anyways. We don't have children yet, but chose a breed that would be good with children when the time came.

IF you have any questions about him or Shih Tzu breed, let me know =) We think he's perfect, of course =)

I was going to mention a Great Dane until I read the small dog part. Sorry, I love my big dogs! I don't know much about small dogs, particularlly ones that are good with children. Good luck!

I would guess that a Sheltie would be okay but cocker spaniels are noted to be snappy with children. I like poodles. They don't shed, they have hair so you don't have to concern yourselves with allergies. They are also very smart and therefore easy to train.

Jack Russell terriers have a terrier personality. Check out Jack Russell Rescue. This is a HUGE dog in a little dog suit. Not a breed for small children and not for every family.

I was going to say the same thing!::yes::

We got George (see picture under my username) in March and he's wonderful. He is a Papillon and weighs about 6lbs. full grown.

I did a lot of research in breeds of smalls dogs that are the best with children, and came up with the Papillon. This breed is extremely intelligent, and trains easily. George potty trained in 3 weeks! They are not overly hyper or aggresive, and are very sweet natured.

I had a Jack Russell for about a week. No thanks. This big dog in a little dog costume was too much for me (and my kids who were nipped incessantly) Could have been the individual, but I have heard that they do require a lot of maintenance to avoid bad outcomes. (Bored Jack Russells make for a lot of damage, I understand)

We also had schnauzers. They are sturdy little dogs who require grooming, so not a lot of shedding. I love this breed and would get one in a minute if my husband would let me have another pet in the house. (we put our Snickers down about 3 years ago at the age of 15).

At any rate, before getting any dog, make sure your kids are all on the same page as to how to train a puppy. If everyone knows what to expect, the training will go much better.

Retired Greyhounds! They come houstrained, crate trained, leash trained, plus.........
they are the most trusting dogs I have ever come across with children. Our oldest taught our Dn how to walk (she was the walking furniture). They hardly bark, don't shed, are easy keepers, are not prone to hip dysplasia.
they are absolutely so incredible with children. We have had several breeds all sizes, and I do recommend not forgetting about larger breeds, smaller breeds "tend" to be very nervous around children.
also, please don't over look a rescued dog, perhaps from your humane society. We only have rescues, and the bond you create with them is incredible. they way they look into your eyes, and then it is it...they spend the rest of their life saying thank you for saving them. Many humane society's have programs where you can return the dog if it doesn't work. if you must do a pure breed puppy, please please please find a respected breeder. you will buy a very very $$$$ problem going to someone who is only trying to clear cash on a litter. puppymill's are very real nightmares all over the country. AKC can send you approved breeder lists...
JMO, of course, good luck with your search.
I cannot imagine my life without our "pups". owning a dog is the nearest we get to heaven on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Shiba Inu!!! Great with kids, good watch dog, between 16-25 pounds full grown. And cute too!

If you are not gone all day long, I'd recommend the Bichon Frise (of course ;) ). They are great with kids and don't shed.

On the down side, they can be difficult to housebreak and need regular brushing and grooming.

samoyeds are great with children, but alot to take care of and alot of hair .great danes are too, were gone to get another one eventually.

How about a beagle? They're typically not large dogs (except my mom's who got an abnormally large gene and he's 50 lbs and very tall!) and they're wonderful with kids. I have no problems with my mom's beagle around my daughter (of course I'd still never leave them alone cause she has been known to pull hair), but my mom's pomeranian is a totally different story. He's a mean little guy when he wants to be.

I have a minituare poodle that is great with my kids. He is very smart, and doesn't shed. He is very loyal to the kids as well.

We also have a Lab. The Lab is wonderful!

We have 2 Bichon's and a Catahoula. They are all great dogs. The Bichon's were a perfect match for us since one of my DD's is allergic so needed one that didn't shed at all. Check www.petfinder.com for adoptable pets in your area. 2 of ours are rescue's from local shelters, it works out great. One advantage to an older dog is that they aren't as hyper, usually the rescue group can tell you if they are good with kids.

Bichon's are really good with kids.
My beagles are wonderful with children as well. They're pretty low maintenance, but very stubborn.

Bichons are great dogs. We just got one in July after having a peek-a-poo for 17 years who was miserable especially with children. This bichon I just love he is a joy to have around.
