What about refillable water bottles. They can be used on an African safari, a Disney adventure, and most importantly at home. You can tell them Tink is going green!
The stainless steel ones are nice, light and dish washer safe. (Sigg are the swiss made ones about $20 others at target are $12--I received a Sigg as a gift a while back and my husband liked it and took it). Combine that with a clip and they can have beverages at the ready. If your family is one of those that doesn't drink FL water you could also include some Kool-aide or Crystal light packs.
On the cool but unneeded, night vision goggles/binoculars would be awesome for the AKL--yes I know you can uses the ones that the hotel has; however how cool would it be to watch them from the room. My neighbor is a SWAT leader and when his family went, I told him to take his googles. (He thought I was nuts). He told me when they got back this was the best advise anyone had given, and his kids loved watching the animals in the dark from the room.
