Hi

I am in the process of securing permission to take a dear friend of mine (and one of her staff) on a disneyworld trip. She has severe MR and autism, and has some challenging behavioral issues. She is mainly non-verbal, but can communicate quite well in her own way. I was asked by her group home agency to come up with a proposal/presentation to show exactly how I plan to pull this off. I will be paying for my friend and her staff, so I have to sick somewhat to a budget, but I don't neeed to present anything financially related. I am looking for suggestons for things to add to proposal. This is what we have so far:

1. Preparation of (for the sake of needing to use a name, we'll call her "boo" after her favorite word as well as charachter) Boo for trip: Will watch disney planning video, look at pictures, talk about what we will do each day. Also have been taking day trips to local amusement parks to 'test the waters' so to speak.

2. Transportation. It would be easiest to fly, as we are 17 hours from Florida. Boo loves to look at airplanes, but has never been on ne. This is the area I am most worried about, as she rocks and can be very loud. Her staff is asking her PCP about PRN sedation for the plane ride only. Security may be an issue, as I doubt she will walk through the metal detector without assistance. Any suggestions in this area would be greatly appreciated.

3. Accomodations. We will be staing off property in a rental house. This is 100 percent necessary due to her tantrums (They are loud and sound scary) so privacy is a need. Don't mind the ride too and from the park- Boo loves riding in cars! Will be renting a car (unless we end up driving for whatever reason). Also will be bringing motion detector alarms for night time (she has these at home, too)

4. Medical/Emergency: Does not do well with heat, and thus plan to go in January. Boo takes many meds, and legally they have to be kept in a lock-box. Will this pose problems with security? Any hospitals in the area that are generally good?

5. In park- will use wheelchair (she is mobile- this is for behavioral reasons..less tantrums, prevents elopement. Have done this at other attractions), Candy in my pocket (old trick, shes so busy looking for whats in my pocket and trying to get it out she doesn't realize we are waiting. Also plan to get GAC to hopefully have a less crowded area to wait... as Boo will want to hug other guests  . Planning on eating at counter service places (though she does love sushi!). Plan on staying at parks for a few hours each day, probably early morning as this is when behavior is best. Not the most cost effective vacation- but its for Boo, not me.

Anything else I should add or consider?

Thanks!!!

I can't answer most of your questions except for giving some information for this part.

As the meds are needed I would hope airport security wouldn't give you a hard time. Disney security shouldn't give you any problems when going through the bag check. Be sure to have all of her prescriptions and the meds in their original containers. I don't know but I would think that First Aid in the parks would have a secure area to store any meds. They are also good if you need a quiet place to take care of any medical needs or just for a break.

Florida Hospital Celebration is not even a few minutes down the road from WDW and is a good hospital AFAIK.

You can have the airport through the airline provide an employee who will push Boo to and from the plane. I got to ride in a golf cart during my Midwest trip and the staff were always helpful. This will make it easier for security to check her and as you said to reduce elopement. My NYC trip was ruined as I was tired from walking across LAX because my friend did not think I needed a wheelchair.

Diet is important and anything she loves should be factored in. Try to find things she loves such as animals, flowers or trains.

Some sort of label in her clothes to identify her is my suggestion not sure how good it is.

Each park has a nurse's station which can make changing a disabled person easier, doing medical tests, and probably can help you with other stuff. The parks have on site personnel to handle any medical emergency.

the rest can be handled by other members better.

I waited to see if anyone would respond.

Take a disabled tag or plaque if you have one as this gives you free valet parking and disabled parking.

FAQs here are a wonderful place with lots of information. Definitely get a GAC. How does she do in restaurants? If she does ok then do not be afraid to make reservations. Early lunch or late lunch times are least busy. Guests dress casual and unlike urban restaurants the WDW park restaurants tend to be more tolerant.

Make sure any routine shots or doctor's visits are not during her vacation. Bring prescriptions for her meds incase they get lost or stolen. Mom dropped her second last pill and I had to go to the drug store for more the next day, hrmph.

Print out a copy of things you will need for the area you are staying like gas stations, restaurants and markets. Print out maps.

Study the park maps and get familiar on where there are colder places if she does get over heated. Where are the bathrooms and nurses stations for example.

Check to see which of these.

1. California Grill at the Contemporary Resort
2. Kimono's at the Swan Resort
3. Wolfgang Pucks at Downtown Disney
4. (Epcot Japanese Pavillion)
5. Benihana at the Hilton

I think she would love the sushi in the Japanese Pavillion. Since you are driving you can drive to a hotel and they will let you park for free for 3 hours last time I heard.

Check out the FAA's info on traveling witha disability:

The screening process might be easier than you expect if you know what her rights are.

If she uses PECS in her daily schedule, make some for disney. download pictures from this site and allears.net to use in conjuction with things from her own pecs.

Hope youhave a great trip. You are an angel for doing this:thumbsup2
