Due to work commitments, we are going to be leaving later than we planned. We will be doing longer days and are looking for good ideas for foods for both snacks as well as foods we can use towards meals if we want to make up time and not stop for long. Any input? We are crossing into the US so we cannot bring any meat. If anyone has any ideas of things we can even stop and grab at a grocery store when we do cross the border, I'd appreciate it.

For car trips we always bring cheese (mozeralla, cheddar or jack, something that doesn't require refridgeration), crackers (2 or 3 different kinds), nuts, fresh fruit, protein/energy bars, pop tarts, peanut butter tubes (very little mess). I always try to bring items that are not messy and don't need to be cold. I also take baby wipes and paper towels to wipe hands/face, clean up any spills, etc..

I also recommend the single serve Crystal Light packages in lemonade and the flavored iced teas...they're yummy and they perfect size package to pour into a bottle of water, close, shake and drink! It's yummy and easy, and you can carry them around the parks and just ask for cups of water when you have meals, or get thirsty (running around) and it's a simple and good drink!

Our local grocery store makes good fried chicken tenders. Tasty cold with chips or even a potato salad if you wanted to take a lunch break.

We always make beef jerky for the trip and take cheese and crackers. Also stop at the nut store for garlic peanuts, roasted pecans, etc.

Usually have along some apples and/or bananas.

For us, the drive is about 13 hours from New Orleans, so we usually take the train or drive. Flying is not an option unless we only have a couple of days. We usually take along a lot of power bars, chips, and evamore water. I usually like to get a daquiri before we get out of New Orleans and then we usually stop several times for b_breaks and stock up on more goodies. Packing a small ice chest with gatorade, and cheese and crackers is also fun. If you have kiddies pack lots of liquids and low sugar snacks unless you have a dvd in your vehicle.

We get 2 large submarine sandwiches from the grocery store and hae them cut and wrapped separately. The make good, sturdy lunches or quick dinners and they travel well in a cooler.

I like to have hard boiled eggs...gives you some protein w/o worrying about the meat issue. I also like dried fruits, nuts, salted popcorn, nut butters, and good bread. For the first day you may want to think about taking a small Brie, which is best at room temp anyway, and then some hard cheeses to slice later. Raw vegetables and dressing are good too. I try to stay away from white flour, sugar, and processed food...zaps your energy.

Last year was our first driving and trip to WDW. We drove from west of Toronto and it took us 24 hrs. We took crackers, bag of mixed nuts, cheese string, apples (leave the stickers on them for health reasons at the border), p.butter sandwiches, drink boxes, chips, cookies. Hope this helps. Were heading down again as you can see and will bring about the same this time and when we get there pick up bread and bagels.

Have fun and enjoy. :Pinkbounc :bounce: :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Ok, I'll pipe in from your kids' perspective. Little Debbies! :)

Actually when I was kid, I remember we always made lunchmeat sandwiches at the rest stops and then munched on cookies and candy whenever we went on long trips.

Vacation was an excuse to eat unhealthy food.

We bring varied stuff. Lots of what was mentioned. Juice boxes, water, Peanut butter, crackers, cheese, fruit, hard boiled eggs, pop tarts, animal crax., cereal. All good stuff for a long long drive.

I also like to bring dried fruit. Apricots, cranberries, tropical mix, raisins, raisins covered in vanilla yogurt (really good!), trail mix. I don't bring all of that stuff. Just what we're in the mood for beforehand. It's nice to have choices!
