Been reading these posts for a long time and I wanted to thank all of you for all your great ideas & suggestions.

Now, in the process of planning my son's Blue & Gold Ceremony for Cub Scouts, do you guys have any fun, creative ideas for themes and/or cakes?

Thanks.

My husband is the Cubmaster at our church, and for refreshments the boys had a cake contest. Basically, they designed the cake, made the cake, and received different awards for the cakes. It was great seeing how creative they were. They were very proud of their creations and everyone liked that the cakes also acted as dessert.

My husband also made a video of the boys that they could watch when they arrived and waited for dinner. The photos were from various activities and was set to the song "Follow Me, Boys!"--the quintessential scouting movie.

We've always done this as well, a "Feller's Cake Bake" where the boys had to make a cake with another male (father, uncle, family friend).

As for the theme we usually would use whatever theme was for that month. We've done Chinese New Year, Hawaiian and Cub Scouts in the Future. For the Hawaiian and Chinese themes they hired outside dance companies to come and perform, it was really fun and at the end of the performances they encouraged the boys to come dance with them, they all had a great time (so fun to watch them hula dance :rotfl:).

We changed packs last year after a move and they didn't really have a theme, but they got a clown/magician to perform and that was really fun, too.

We don't usually go overboard on the theme but we have done lots and lots of different themes. Themes in our pack are primarily for what the table decorations will look like. Themes we have done are Honoring our Firemen, Honoring our Service Men, Scouting across the Century (for this year's 100th Birthday), Communications, Our favorite Scouting Activities, etc. About a month before we start getting the kids going on the theme. The kids have a blast brainstorming about what they want their centerpiece to look like and then creating it. If appropriate we will invite special guests from those areas to come in and give a speach and ask anyone who's served, etc to stand up and be recognized. We will also play a game related to the theme. Such as a quiz game where we ask scouting related questions that also touch on the theme and table with the most right answers gets a small scouting related prize (last year it was a package of cub scouts pencils).

One of the things we do is make the Blue & Gold cake for the Webelos who will be crossing over to Boy Scouts. We go to BJs and they put the Den's pictures on the cake.

We have a slide show of activities that the kids have done over the past year that runs throughout the meeting. We get one of the more techo geek parents to put it together on their computer and show it.

As part of the ceremony when the boys cross over we have the OA dancers come in and do the dance/show that they put on. This is really cool. The scouts come dressed in Indian headdresses and apparrel, they do a drum sequence, dance and give a speach about the origins of scouting. It is free - we just have to feed the Scouts and their leader. You can ask your council if this is something your local chapter of OA does.

BTW thank you for this as we are going to get going on planning ours soon as well. It will be good to have some fresh ideas.

I'm looking for ideas as well! In our Pack the Webelos II den & Leader plan the whole Blue & Gold for the Pack. That's me, this year.

Last spring we had a B-day party where everyone went home with a small gift. It was a potluck and they ordered the cake. There were streamers and balloons. A movie about Lord Badin Powell that was (unfortunately) very long and extremely boring.

Usually our Pack just has dinner catered and they have the boys cross over a bridge, where the Boy Scouts are waiting to welcome them. Either pictures or video of the Webelos scouts displayed. Not too exciting.

We always have a short talk by the Friends of Scouting rep who asks for donations. I don't like that part.

But I would love to hear some other ideas!!! :thumbsup2

Last year the theme was SuperHeroes. Each den had two rows of tables they had to decorate and a related cake. My DS was a Tiger last year so they made Superman centerpieces at one of the den meetings, they covered the tables with red plastic tablecloths, and someone made a "S" logo with all the Tigers names piped around the outside of the cake. They made placemats from construction paper and stickers. None of it was a big expense. They also had Superman coloring sheets and crayons and cups to keep the little guys busy.

Another den (maybe Wolves?) did military heroes (camoflage, GI Joes to decorate, etc.). I can't really remember the rest - there were 5 dens - so 5 different types of superheroes.

I love this! I'm going to suggest this for ours at the next committee meeting!

We had a local fencing club come and give a short talk regarding fencing and do a demonstration. The kids and parents loved it. The fencing club didn't charge us.
