On the "ideas for exchanges" thread, a few people seemed interested in a novel/book exchange. I'd love to host it, but before I start sign-ups, I thought I'd see what ideas people have for it to see if we can make it work.
Most of the time, we like to exchange new items, but with a book exchange, I think 'gently' used books would be OK. We all have those books we thought we'd like but didn't, the ones we read once and never opened again, the ones someone gave us that we either have already or don't like the genre. But to be fair, if we decide to do used, they would have to be in very good shape. Or to be totally fair, we could go new and set a minimum.
I thought we'd list the types of books we like--romance, non-fiction, mystery, etc. You might want to list authors you love, or ones you don't like. You might even want to try something new!
The books would have to be mailed either first class or priority mail. I checked--a paperback should fit into a priority mail envelope. A priority flat rate envelope costs about $5 to mail. Depending on how heavy the book is, that might be slightly more than first class. And please, no media mail--yes, it's cheaper, but it can take a long time to get to the person.
I'm going out of town next weekend (July 5th-July 9th) so I thought I'd start sign-ups some time after that. Would that work for people? I should be available for most of July/August so those dates can be flexible.
So if you think you'd be interested, respond here. Am I on the mark for how you thought this would go? or am I totally crazy? This could be a fun way to discover a new author or a new genre.
Let me know what you think!
