Ideas for a book to read at my daughters school

Any of the Shel Silverstein books, A Light in the Attic, etc. They are collections of short poems and I have never seen kids sit so still as when they are listening to these--better for 3rd grade though.

5th grade-how much time do you have to read? Kids that age are reading pretty long chapter books. Are you reading for several days or just one?

If you like to get into character and like to do different accents, Skippyjon Jones by Judity Byron Schachner is HYSTERICAL and the kids absolutely love it. Once I read it in my classroom, the kids check it and the others in the series out immediately. It might be too young for the fifth graders but it's perfect for the third graders--that's what I teach. :goodvibes

How much time do you have to read to them? There are some great folklore stories that are not long. I loved reading trickster tales even to older students.

Check with the teacher to make sure it hasn't already been read to them.

Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is by far one of my favorite children's books. I even read it to my sixth graders at the beginning of the year and they love :)

Being a 4th grade teacher my top three suggestions would be...

Saving Sweetness

Squids Will Be Squids

Bedhead

My students always love James Stevenson's books. They're getting harder to find though so I recently bought quite a few of them on ebay. What's Under My Bed? is one of my favorites.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler I've never read this to a group of kids who didn't love it.

Also, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the hilarious sequal, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator go over well with that age group.

ETA - forgot Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH!

I'm guessing you are doing one read aloud session with each class. If that's the case, chapter books would be out and you are looking for good picture books.

For 5th grade, I highly recommend "The Hickory Chair" by Lisa Rowe Fraustino

Or, just about anything written by Patricia Polacco. A personal favorite of mine about bullying and believing in yourself is a book called, "Thank you, Mr. Faulker."

For the third graders my favorites are
Chocolatina

Enemy Pie

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (told from the wolf's point of view)

These have all been big favorites of my students over many years -- and they are not ones many have heard before.

The squid book wound up being perfect.
The class had actually done a play, on samw authors retelling of three litlle pigs, so it worked in that way as well. Many thanks for all the ideas. Just got letters from the class and they really loved it
Again tanks all
