I would like to tell my kids DD8 and DS6 we are going WDW in August by doing a scavenger hunt or Kimposibile mission.
What specific things have you done in telling your kids about an upcoming trip. I would like to tell them about a month before we go.
Thanks

We told our crew on Christmas morning. We had one more "gift" under the tree they had to open which kicked it off. Here is what the clues said...

Christmas surprises aren’t over yet,
One more is still waiting you won’t soon forget.
To figure out where the last one may be,
Go look for clue 1 where you go to pee!

Clue 1, you found it, hip hip hooray!
We’re going somewhere special before Sam’s birthday
To find clue 2 where must you head?
How about under Zach’s bed!

Clue 2 was fun, it had a gift
You’ll need some entertainment when our airplane takes lift!
To find clue 3 where should you go?
Peek in some boots you wear in the snow!

Clue 3 is really just a tease,
To make you hunt more and give you wiggly knees.
Where? When? Details you want more?
Then look for clue 4 on the basement door!

Clue 4 was awesome, it had a prize too
But what good will blank pillowcases and a book do?
They are for signatures from some special friends
Who you ask? You’ll know once this ends!
Are you excited to find out? Then it’s onto #5
It’s taped to where our pets are alive.

Clue 5 will be the last one in this mystery,
I really wonder where that one can be.
Oh what ever, lets end this mirage,
Your big surprise is in the garage!

And they had a big box to open, a Santa Mickey balloon floated out which had our a "Were going to Disney World" countdown calendar attached.

Great clues!! We did a scavenger hunt a few years back to tell the kids we were headed to WDW. I can't remember the exact clues, but at each stop in the scavenger hunt I had a Disney related present (Disney t-shirts, autograph books, pins, etc). At the end of the hunt, we put all the presents together and the kids added them up to figure out that we were going back to WDW. It was a lot of fun.

I have done huge elaborate ones for my kids for different reasons

string hunt: get a bunch or yarn at dollar tree. wrap it all around the hosue and have a clue at the end

stuff words of the clue in balloons. Blow up a bunch of them and kids haved to pop them

Make a word search (many sites to help you) left over letters spell a clue

Picuture clues: take pictures very close up of different things and have them figure out what it is and put a clue there

Write clues on the back of a DT puzzle that they have to put together first

Write it in invisible ink, or in code

I make all the clues rhyme like the PP did.

Have fun!

This is a great list, I'm going to copy this, I LOVE doing scavenger hunts for my kids.

For our trip I made the clues rhyme. Each child had their own age appropriate clues and they found a piece of paper with a letter on it in each hiding place. When they were done they all brought their letters down and I had a poster with blanks for the letters (like wheel of fortune) and I put a couple letters where they went then left them to try to unscramble the rest.

I did a hunt for my DD and her friends last year when she was turning 11. It took them 2 hours and they all said it was the best party ever. I'm trying to thing of the other ones..

There was a note with a bunch of words misspelled. (some words had an extra letter) all of the extra letters spelled the next clue

I took a ton of plastic eggs (hundreds) and typed out the word "SORRY" on strips of paper. I stuffed one into each egg. They opened them all up and thought at first that there was no clue. Took awhile for them to figure out it was in the SORRY game. (I was very proud of myself for that one..)

We have given them GPS coordinates and had them find a clue that way

I made a clue as small as I could on the computer and they had to use a magnifying glass to read it

I have buried keys in the sand box and they needed them to unlock the treasure box that they found at the end (I wrapped cheap chain around a styrofoam chest that I painted to look like treasure, and locked it closed with one lock per child)

I have recorded sounds that they had to listen to and figure out the next hiding place from that (I think I did the microwave..)

We also made a cute treasure chest cake (from Family Fun I think) that turned out great.

Sorry this doesn't help with your Disney reveal.. I would probably make a huge hunt and at the end have them push play on the DVD player and have it be the Disney planning video. :)

That being said, my kids loved knowing months in advance so they could help with all the plannning.. especially the restaurants. At 8 my DD spent hours pouring over guide books for ideas.

Our family LOVES planning together. Although I don't have any great ideas for how to tell them you are going with a scavenger hunt, here is a cut n'paste of one of my posts from another forum (to a mom that wanted to surprise her kids with a 1st trip...i was sharing why we don't surprise our kids)...it is suggestions for what to do once the kids DO know, including a daily scavenger hunt that we've done for the last 6 trips or so:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
One more thought: planning for Disney is truly half the fun for many people. You might want to consider telling the kids sooner. We have "Disney planning" nights where we look at park maps, watch the planning DVD, maybe eat Mickey head-shaped pancakes (or whatever), look at what summer clothes they want to pack, etc etc. We have also made autograph books, Disney tie-dye t-shirts, and activity books for the car ride down together prior to trips. This is SO MUCH FUN for kids!

After 10 trips to WDW with my kids, we asked them if they wanted to be surprised on the next trip (they just turned 7 and we're going in May)...they considered it, but in the end decided that they wanted to know at least a month before so we can do our countdown calendar and other planning. The calendar is quite a project, but so much fun...I do a 30 day countdown calendar with Mickey head-shaped cutouts on a posterboard. There are the number of "days left until Disney" on one side of the Mickey head, and a picture of something we'll do there on the other. Every morning, I hide 3 clues around the house -taped to a big Mickey head so they know what they're looking for. The clues are hints to what the picture is for the day. For example, if there is a picture of the pool at Port Orleans the clues might be 1. It is at our resort. 2. It will give you exercise. 3. Bring a towel, you'll get wet!
The kids love it.

I did a scavenger hunt to reveal at Disney surprise about 3 years ago. It was so much fun and our kids loved it. It was super hard not to have disney discussions as we planned because I am a huge planner and love talking about it. The surprise was worth every minute of the struggle to keep my mouth shut.;)

I am not sure of your children's ages but here are my clues.... (a couple of them were rather hard but my kids were 11 & 7 ... I think:rolleyes:)

#1: Here is a clue to a special surprise.
Look for the next one in the place where you see your eyes.
bathroom mirror

#2 The clue are a puzzle to help you to know...
To find the next one you will have to use your toe.
in one of the kid's shoes

#3 Now find the place where we receive our bills.
If you look really closely you will discover a thrill
the mailbox

#4 Look for something that is really yummy,
Go to the place where you feed your tummy.
Taped and dangling inside the refrigerator

#5 There will be loads of laughter and fun
Find your next clue where the laundry is done
hanging inside the dryer

#6 You never know you will meet
Now go to the place where you wipe your feet
under the front door welcome mat

#7 The hunt is almost over but the fun has just begun.
Now go to the place near your gun.
my son's video game gun accessory

#8 CONGRATULATIONS!
You have discoverd all the clues.
We knew you were able, now go work together
at the kitchen table.

All of the clues were written on the outside of envelopes. Inside each envelope were squares with letters, a few in each envelope (all in different fonts) that spelled out...
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

At two different points I had an envelope with each child's name and in that envelope were Disney Dollars. On the envelope were instructions not to open until told to do so. They came back to the table and put those 2 envelopes aside and opened the others with the clues and solved the puzzle. When they figured out clues.... when you wish upon a star I gave them a poem to read (that I had written and it laid out the plans). Needless to say they went nuts. :woohoo: We then gave them the envelopes and a gift bag with a couple of new Disney t-shirts. It was so much fun...a great memory that they still talk about.

If you are interested in reading my poem or my TR from that trip the link is at the bottom of this page. :goodvibes

Have fun!
Darlene
