id required for under 18?

The agent said it makes it easier.

What was he saying was easier? With DS: how old are you (b/c 12 and under can go through Pre with Pre-having parent) and how do you say your name...and he's done.

The TSA agent would ask old she was and then told her to put the ID away.

Same experience when our then-little DS had his brand new passport. The TSA guy was *annoyed* that DS was showing it to him.

How do they know they are under 18? I've seen high school kids who look 25, and 25 year olds that look 16.

They ask. If they have a question, they ask more questions. Just like anything with airport security.

If an older, older-looking, teen wants to carry something with them, go for it. But it's NOT required for minors not traveling on domestic, age-restricted, fares. And a 10 year old truly really seriously doesn't need ID, and a TSA person might be irritated at this extra thing being shown to him/her.

It just holds up the line.

More examples of the rules saying one thing and individual screeners doing as they choose. When is the last time they caught a terrorist at the airport?

You are correct = passports and state id's are acceptable forms of ID per the TSA website (at least for now until the Secure ID rule goes into effect) but birth certificates are were mentioned up thread are not. My mistake! I probably should have stuck with unnecessary - as is clearly stated on the TSA website.

What is the Secure ID rule?

Leave the birth certificate copy at home. They won't look at it. Especially a copy. Who's to say it's a copy of the real thing?

Since you're supposed to provide your name and birth date for secure passenger screening, they can look this up if they have questions. I was told this by a ticket agent when we were discussing how my 11 year old looks 16 and I've been questioned at TSA before (as if I was lying about it).
