Hey, I'm going to be in the World from 1/2-1/9 and I was wondering if anybody new what the policy was for serving alcohol with regards to expired ID's. I'm 21, and my ID has recently expired, but I haven't had the chance to renew it yet (The danger of being a college student without a car, I never need to drive anywhere). I'll have my passport with me in order to have ID for the plane, but I'd prefer not to carry it around with me if I don't have to. Thanks

I'm not sure because I don't have an expired ID or have been with anyone who has. My advice, I know you are very busy as a college student but I would still find the hour (or two) it takes to get it done before you leave. There is an old saying I've learned in my 48 years of life that is so true, "Better safe than sorry." ;)

I don't know where you live but in Massachusetts, you can renew online. Check into it! My DS is 27 and gets carded almost every time he orders a drink. I wouldn't take the chance with an expired license. They check his pretty closely!

In Massachusetts at 21 I could renew online but that was 12 years ago. Definitely check into it. MH had to renew his before Disney and he got the real card in the mail in about 4 business days.

Unfortunately in New York, it takes quite a while to get a new ID, not because of the time it takes to renew it, but because of the time it takes for it to come in :( especially around the holidays, it most definitely will not get here before I leave. I'll plan to bring my passport around with me, especially because it says UNDER 21 in big honking red letters on the side, even though it does have my birthday on it as well. I was just curious because the policy in NY seems to depend on where you are purchasing alcohol, sometimes they take it, sometimes they don't. :confused3

They probably don't look that carefully at the expiration date, but if you really want a drink, I wouldn't risk it. Take your passport, just in case!

I just checked the Disney website and it said a passport was valid ID for check in. Whether they will take it in bars or restaurants. :confused3 But I would make sure you have it JIC. Like I said some places check my sons license thoroughly. Front and back. It might be just for show:rotfl:. But they look like they are really checking it out! Maybe they think that I couldn't possibly have a son that old! :goodvibes Have a great time!

My DD was carded every. single. time on her last trip to WDW. We laughed, because she was 30 at the time. Bring valid ID (your passport this time). If you're worried about losing it, get a moneybelt or neck pouch.

I'm going to be the hard butt in this case and tell you to ALWAYS carry a photo ID with you. ALWAYS. What if something physical happens to you? Sure, you will have people around you that will know you but those magical digits of a driver's license or passport will help out authorities very quickly. Trust me, I know. That's all I will say on that subject. And carry your medical ID as well.

Always have photo ID with you.

I don't think the question is if they will take the passport as ID (of course they will), but if the expired license will be taken as ID.

I wouldn't risk it. I doubt if any of the bars in my area would take it. And I wouldn't assume other states' bars would.

I would do the renewal so you will be all current sooner rather than later, and for the trip just take the passport to the parks, not the expired driver's license. At 21 I looked about 15, and I DEFINITELY was ID'd all the time. Just tuck the passport down in your backpack/bag/purse that you take to the parks, and make sure you put it back immediately after showing it. Maybe even keep it in a zip-top bag to protect it from rain or water rides.

disnut8, I totally agree with you, but in the case of a horrible accident, even an expired ID would identify her.

Another example that an expired license is not excepted as ID. My mother is 75 years old and can't drive anymore. Her primary care doctors office would not accept her expired license as form of ID. Even tho she had been going there forever!!. We had to take her to the registry and get her an ID so they could update her insurance info.

My license was expired when I was there last summer, and I was turned down once or twice. If you can renew it at all before you go, I'd do it

I don't recall when you are going, but if you go to the DMV office in NYS and renew your license, they will give you a paper form that stands in for your driver's license until a new official one arrives in the mail. That and your expired photo ID should be enough.

I was going to suggest this as well.

I guess it depends how important drinking is to you. You can try to push your state ID through and you might get it before and you might not. They might not take your expired ID and maybe the will. If you really are concerned then your only choice to have your based covered would be to have your passport with you. That being said, I'm 26 and had a drink at 3 different places and no one even blinked.

Hi! I'm from ny as well. If you go to any dmv to renew they physically give you a printout to keep until you get your new id. You can use this paper accompanied by the expired id with no problems. This is what I have done in the past.

At WDW they are pretty darn stringent with ID checking. If you were maybe 35+ with an expired ID I would maybe not be as concerned. But since you are just the legal drinking age, I agree better safe than sorry. Or just carry the passport and be careful with it. Good luck!

A valid id is the only way you will be able to purchase alcohol. Your expired dl is no longer valid. Carry your passport.
