Ice storm is coming......

Is anyone else as worried about their home with the looming ice storm? We have several tall trees behind our home and I'm really worried if we get as much ice as they are calling for that they will come down. One is tall enough to hit the roof of the garage. Hoping that we don't lose power for days. Right now it is a wait and see, I suppose. We do not own a generator and I can just imagine everything spoiling. I guess we will see what happens in the next 48 hours.

no,not worried....just know that we live in the NE,and it's winter,so we get as prepared as we can possibly be....no reason to worry... I would be worried if it surprised us with no warning.....

Can you buy a generator or hire tree trimmers to remove any branches of concern?

Don't worry things wont spoil. Drag out your coolers and fill them with snow or ice and put the food in there. It will be cold enough to sit stuff out in the garage so if you have more food than your cooler can hold fill garbage bags with snow or ice and put food in them and sit them in the garage.

Make sure to have enough batteries on hand. Cell phone are fully charged Buy hand warmers you can get them at Walmart or Home Depot. they stay hot for 8 hours and will help keep your feet warm. If your feet are warm you will feel warm.

Have enough bread and peanut butter on hand. In worst case soup out of a can is not bad.

Remember if the branches crash into the house ITS REPAIRABLE! That is why we have home owners insurance. So don't worry!

We invested in a spare battery pack for our phones. Got it for $49 at Costco and will recharge both of our phone 4 times before it needs recharges. and it charges both phones at once. It also charges a table too. http://www.costco.com/PowerFlask™-1...ones,-Tablets-%26-More.product.100048540.html\

If you have a car in the garage and are able to move it to some where else that doesn't have a lot of trees it might be smart to do so.

Now we move to SC and here we are in a new house and we are suppose to get 1- 1.25 inches of ice. We have prepared basically as well as we can. I would love to have a generator, but with just moving here and paying for DS in college, that can't happen at the moment. Stay safe everyone!

My DH and I were born and raised in MD and moved to NC from 2002-2007 (partly for better weather...we were in Harrisburg, PA for the 2 years prior to moving to NC). And sometime between 2002 and 2003 (can't remember if it was Dec '02 or Jan '03, though I should remember) we had a major ice storm that dropped trees all over the state and power was out for thousands of folks (ours was out for 9 days). It was miserable. The night it hit, we were sleeping and woke to hear all the trees behind our house (we backed up to woods) cracking and crashing...was very odd. We knew the power had gone out but continued to sleep and our kids never woke up. We woke, in the morning, to a freezing cold house but no trees fell on us, thankfully. We put as much stuff as we could in coolers out on the back deck but the temps got too warm, at times, over the 9 days with no power so we lost most everything. We had fish and lost them too . We drove until we could find a hotel and the closest with vacancy was in Fayetteville (1.5 hours away). We had to kennel our dog, in Durham, in a kennel with no power...poor guy. I had lots of dirty laundry when the power went out so I had to hit a laundromat as soon as I could. Dishes were dirty too and I had to hand wash them in the ice cold. Now, whenever a possible ice storm comes I make sure the laundry and dishes are done...and the house is somewhat in order. And I go to the store and get mostly nonperishable foods, paper products, water and TP.

I haven't seen my grass since December and they are calling for a major snow storm Wednesday night. It hasn't been warmer than low twenties and O at night it is getting real stale. But I know some people have it worse can't wait for summer.

I haven't seen my grass since December and they are calling for a major snow storm Wednesday night. It hasn't been warmer than low twenties and O at night it is getting real stale. But I know some people have it worse can't wait for summer.

We have family in Chester County, PA that went through that storm. My DW parents lost many trees. One of which hit their roof. I'm guessing this is why I am a little more paranoid. They were without power for several days. I'm sorry you also had to deal with that.

I've been doing laundry, cleaning and trying to cook stuff that we can eat cold like muffins, biscuits, pancakes, bacon--basically anything that can be eaten cold even if it's not the most appetizing thing.
We have a ton of trees around my house so I'm a little nervous but like a PP said, that's why I have insurance.
Thankfully we have numerous family members within 30 min to an hour away so we could stay with them if necessary. But yes nervous.

We are not worried this time around! Thankfully, we learned our lesson during the last ice storm that left us powerless for 7 days. We had 40 trees taken down a few year's ago. It was not cheap but a 200 ft. tree falling on our house would have cost more! Following our example, the majority of our neighbors used the same tree guy and reduced the risk of trees falling on power lines and their house also. The 7 days we were without power was still fresh in everyone's mind.

We also invested in a generator. It's big enough to power our well, heat, refrigerator, freezer, sump pump and a few lights. As far as food, batteries and water, we are always prepared. You have to be if you live in New Hampshire!

I'm in Chester County PA. I think you have every right to be worried, it was awful here. We had no power for 3 days, but we were lucky. Some I know just got it back yesterday, day 6. Our house was 45F inside when we left. Thankfully our house didn't lose big limbs, but we cut them back tons in the fall, thankfully. We also didn't lose our food, I put ice and snow in the fridge and freezer. But keeping three kids occupied all day in a freezing house with no power was not fun. My toddler was walking around on Thursday in her snowsuit all day. That's when we decided to leave, and I'm glad we did. But them some jerks started robbing houses where the owners had left. Anyway, the whole area looks just awful. I'm scared for the next storm, coming tomorrow night. Not sure how much more I can take.

The pictures from my in-laws were heartbreaking. They live near Brandywine Hospital and the entire neighborhood looks like a war zone. I'm very sorry that you also had to deal with that mess. I heard that you guys were suppose to get another 8-10 inches. Just crazy for there!

You'll probably never get enough snow to justify the cost of a generator, but it might come in handy if hurricanes move through. My daughter lived in SC for a few years and they probably lost power two hours total the whole time.

We were just upgraded to 14in of snow and it is supposed to start tonight (wed) and not stop till mid day Friday (in PA)... We already have a 2 ft of a snow/ice mix on the ground and 4ft high drifts of the same stuff (stuff is like concrete)...plus nobody has any salt... Not much you can do... If you are worried about the power go get a generator. It will be hard to pay for now but if you lose power you will be happy to have it. Our Home depot had a truck load of them sitting there... Good luck, let us know how you made out.

Only worry about the stuff you can actually change. You can't change the weather... It is going to happen weather....you want it too or not.

Yep, sitting here watching the freezing rain coming down right now. We are under a Civil Emergency, which I don't ever recall being under when we lived in northern NY on the Canadian border. Right now they are calling for around 1.2 INCHES of freezing rain plus up to 3 inches of sleet. Man, I am missing my 4 feet of snow in NY right now. We are hunkered down and prepared as much as we can be. Praying for safety for everyone that is dealing with this mess. If you have a generator get an electrician to split up your power panel. They put in a second panel that will hold your emergency items: fridges, heat, well pump so on. When the power goes out turn off the breaker from the main panel supply to the emergency panel, plug in your gen to the emergency panel and you are back in business. Well pumps don't pull that much power and no reason your generator can't power your well.. Something to consider for the future.
