I was wondering, would the small hard sided ice pack (the ones that look like a tiny hot water bottle) be acceptable to go thru security, or would that be frowned upon? Just thinking ahead to my Nov 08 trip to the World, and was thinking of bringing one along to keep in the fridge, just in case I'd need it for bringing any perishable goodies back on the plane.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Jules

As of today, no but who knows about 11/08 - what will or won't be able to bring. Check out the TSA website because IIRC it does mention freezer packs and gel packs.

Also based again on how things are today there are no freezers in the fridges at the resorts so unless your at a DVC you won't have a way to re-freeze the ice pack.

Our freezer pack, exactly as you described, was confiscated on a recent trip. If you are trying to keep food cold for the flight, just put ice cubes in a baggy, and double bag it so the water won't leak in your cooler.

Another way to keep things cold for the trip is frozen grapes or carrot sticks. Both freeze well, stay cold and my dd's love them so its a snack and a cold pack!!

And the TSA will take this too. It's a liquid. Freezing it does NOT make it allowable. Ice cubes are not allowable. Now you can take your baggie and get ice cubes on the other side of security. (Ice made there is "magically safe")

I had small gel packs for baby bottles. I checked them in my suitcase. On the trip home I forgot and had it in my diaper bag. The TSA screener didn't notice and I didn't realize until we were on the plane. Technically it shouldn't have been permitted.

We just returned from WDW in January. My husband is diabetic and I packed his insulin in a soft-sided cooler with a gel pack in my carry on.

The TSA screeners didn't even look at it....it wasn't even questioned at either airport.

Why don't you pack it in your checked luggage if you won't need it during the trip?

We stayed at POP and got a fridge because it was medically necessary for my DH's insulin. We cranked the temp in the fridge down and it would freeze the gel pack if we put it next to the freezer.

Hope that helps.

We got through security with ice cubes twice in the last month...???? Maybe because they hadn't started to melt??? Who knows how the TSA will react at any given airport at any given time.

Not noticing is a TSA specialty. I had hairspray in my purse instead of the plastic baggie a week ago. I was selected for the extensive serach. TSA screener goes through all my luggage, purse etc. Never saw the hairspray.

I've used a bag of frozen veggies as an ice-pack and it worked quite well. I just placed it in a zip-loc bag in case it started to melt and created any condensation.
