Any tips/hints? Can I make them the day before? I read on a site that it is best to prepare them on the day they are to be served. I was thinking about using canned whipped cream on top just before serving instead of icing. I'm worried about how they might turn out since I haven't made them before. Thanks! :goodvibes

I put a layer of aluminum foil over the top of my cupcake pans. Then carefully poke a little hole in each holder. Put the cones in carefully so as to not tear any more foil than necessary. Fill about 1/2 to 2/3 full. Bake as usual.

I use canned frosting on mine. They are best made the day of, no harder than cupcakes. I leave them in the pans to transport.

They are always a big hit! :cool1:

make them the day you are going to need them ~ I made some last fall for my dd bday and made them the night before ~ by morning the bottoms and sides of the cones were soft and some of them had fallen over :(
of course the kids dont mind ~ but they were not a pretty as i had hoped

I've got to make some of these. They sound really cute! I'm afraid it will have to wait until next week, though. I've got too much on my plate this week!

I've used muffin tins to put the cones in to keep them from tipping. I've made them the night before and haven't had many problems, I've even frosted them the night before and the kids still love them. I've also used sprinkles and other toppings on top of the frosting to make it fun.

If you have to transport several of them, an easy way to do it is by using a large shirt box (gift wrapping style). Cut X's in it and fold the pieces down, then insert the cones in each X. You can get a lot of them in there, it holds them upright while you travel. I usually wrap a napkin around each cone before inserting so they don't get any germs or bad stuff from the box.

I've used the box idea to transport the cones too. I used a sturdy shallow cardboard box with small circles cut into it. Then wrapped it with birthday wrapping paper and carefully poked through the paper. I placed a candle in each cupcake. It was easy to take to Pizza Hut for the party. Oops, I had better give DH credit for the idea.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I'm making them for DS first birthday party. After hearing about bad "make ahead" experience, I'm going to try to plan my time so that I can make them the day of the party. It's a carnival theme, so I really like the idea of the shirt box for using when handing them out, sortof like a vendor. I'll do the sprinkles too! I can't wait to see how they turn out! Pray for good weather on Saturday :umbrella: the party is outside!

 Thanks again!

These are a favorite of ours! I haven't made them in a while though. How was the party?? :)

They party turned out great, thanks for asking! The cupcakes were a big hit and very yummy. I made them the day of the party and they cooked really quickly. I was able to make 36 of them with one box of cake mix. I was careful not to overfill, but a few of them did run over, but it just looked like melting ice cream. I'm normally partial to sugar cones for my ice cream, but the regular ones were good with cake. I think DH dropped a couple of them on the way out. I didn't use the shirt box idea yet since we only had to move them from the kitchen to the back yard, but I'm planning to make them for DS4's preschool birthday party next month. They were getting grabbed up before they even made it to the table.
The weather was nice - a little windy, but much better than anticipated. Next is DS4's pirate: pirate party in May!

Thanks so much for all the tips! I love the DIS! :cheer2:

Glad they were a hit and that the party went well!!!
