I

Many great ideas - how about assisting coaching (baseball, basketball) - would suggested coaching but assisting to start

That sounds like a lot of fun. How would you suggest a beginner get into those sports? (Hope it's okay I'm jumping in here to ask!)

He's not a fighter. He is a big guy. Girls use to try to talk him into beating up heir ex-boyfriends but he refused. Football coach asked "who that boy" was once to my friend when he was cleaning up the fields for the boy scouts. He is a marching band kid. I had him in taekwondo when we were in Korea for a short time, he didn't like it.

Cooking is actually expensive. And since he is on a diet (he was up to 240 pounds) that wouldn't be a good idea. The last he mentioned he has lost 12 pounds, but last time I saw him (yesterday) I think he has lost more.

All the more reason to start cooking! It sounds like it could be really useful for him to learn how to make himself healthy food on a budget that still tastes good. He doesn't have to do expensive classes, he can look for recipes online (including online communities like My Fitness Pal), YouTube videos, cookbooks (can even borrow them from the library), etc.

Since you mentioned he excels in Math, has he ever played the numbers game 24? Our children learned it in middle school. It is now offered in our adult education classes. A lot of fun for people of all ages, you can compete against yourself or against others. Oh, and extremely addictive.

Does he have a balcony/patio at his apartment. How about gardening? Maybe he could set up some type of space saving gardening area and then he would also grow some fresh produce for his diet.
