I won't be winning any parenting awards next year either!!

I almost did the same thing. I was going to book our trip for August 7th - 14th. Just out of nowhere, I decided to check the school calendar. Needless to say, we're going to WDW a week early.

What happened to the old days when school was in session from the Tuesday after Labor day until the Friday before Memorial day? I miss the old days. Our family would take extended cross-country driving trips. Now, I am like the OP, it is impossible to fit my daughter's school schedule with my school schedule for family vacations.

It all depends on where you lived in the old days. The school has nevered ended in May here.

NYC public schools has always started after Labor Day and ended late June. This year I believe the last day is June 29.

We used to have the same schedule here as the other posters in the south. Getting out in May and going back the first week in Aug. It was good and bad at the same time! A few years ago, the disctrict decided to change the calendar. Typically we get most of our hurricanes in the later part of Aug and the kids had a whole week to make up going into Sept. So that year, they changed to us going back the 3rd week of Aug and getting out the first week in June. It was harder on the ex than the kids. He typically was able to get the vacation dates he wanted earlier in the summer. So the last few years he has had to wait until almost Aug to pick them up.

My perspective...missing those first few days of school is really hard on a kid! Those are the times when teachers introduce class routines and rules and the kids get to know one another. Depending on where you live and how old your son is, it could matter a lot...or very little.

Does your school still give out class placements ahead of time? Here you wouldn't even know who your son's teacher is going to be until you get back, since they don't let you know what teachers your children have until the day before school starts.

That said, if it's the only time your husband can go, then go! I would discuss this with your son, however, and let him know you'll do your best to help him get into the school routine when you get home from the trip!
