I went to a party tonight at Sandbridge beach in Virginia Beach. It had been raining all day but cleared up at 430 when I got to the party. About 530 a couple of us stepped on to the deck over looking the ocean. We were admiring the surfers and watching as the people at the cottage next to us were setting up the upper deck with tables, speakers, and decorations.

First I guess I should explain that this was a 3 story beach cottage with two decks and then an inground pool at the bottom. It was overlooking the beach as well.

We assumed it to be a wedding reception b/c of the dress of the people and the set up. While they were setting up I was watching some kids play in the pool. I was concerned because at times I didn't see an adult present.

At 6pm there were lots of people on the deck. I don't know how many because I was watching the clouds in the sky. All of a sudden I heard this horrific sound...a cracking sound...I spun around to see the upper deck (3rd floor) coming crashing to the ground. People were clawing at the deck trying to stop themselves. People were screaming and I watched helplessly as people were trying frantically to free themselves of the deck debris in the water.

I grabbed my cell phone and called 911. I was able to get out what had happened and where we were but she kept asking me questions....I know she had to ask them but I really wanted to scream at her to hurry and send help. There were people bleeding, there were people crying. But she was very calm and kept asking me how many people I saw. I told her between 40 and 50...but my head was spinning and I really jsut wanted to throw up.

People from our cottage ran over to help pull people from the water. Two of them even jumped in the water and were lifting debris off of people who were trapped in the water. One woman was trapped under the deck against a fence on the ground. People on the scene had to lift the deck off of her and then they lifted her over a fence to get her out from under the deck. She didn't move for a long time. People said she was conscious when they took her away.

There were ambulances from all over the city, fire trucks, and a mass casualty response team. As far as we could tell there were no fatalities. there were 4 serious injuries around the deck, but apparently lots of people went back in the house and were walking wounded. Many were taken to the hospital. The bride appeared fine at first but she was eventually forced into a chair and the last thing I saw was that they were putting a neck brace on her and taking her away.

The deck appeared to just snap off the back of the house, I heard one person say that there were not big bolts holding the deck on, just nails. Those nails appeared to be the reason for a lot of the blood.

I'm sorry this is so long but its been over 4 hours since this happend and I'm still shaking. I hope this makes some sense and has a limited number of gramatical errors, because my mind is not all here. Thank you for letting me share.

Wow, I can't even imagine seeing something like that happen, I hope everyone is all right. Sorry you had to witness that, what a scary thing to see.

Oh dear.... Tara

I am so sorry you witnessed that, and I am so sorry for all those people involved with that accident. That sounds like a positive nightmare there! I just pray that no one will be really critically or seriously injured.

Rest if you can

How horrible! How sad for the bridal couple too.
I hope everyone recovers, mentally and physically, including those who witnessed and rendered aid.

:grouphug:

:grouphug: That's all I can offer you.
Thank you for calling 911. :grouphug:

I'm glad that you had the presence of mind to dial 911. Your quick thinking may have saved someone's life. :grouphug:

Elaine is right. It will be hard, but you should do your best to rest tonight.

Oh dear!
You probably saved more than a few lives by calling 911.
I'm sorry you had to see that. :grouphug:

How awful. Glad everyone made it, hope it stays that way. I always get nervous when there are a lot of people on decks or porches up high. Try to relax, maybe a glass of wine or a warm bath? :grouphug:

Thank goodness you called 911 when you did.

I can only imagine what you saw was like in slow motion - and you probably couldn't believe your eyes when it happened. How terrible - but it does sound like quick thinking saved lives. Hopefully everyone has only minor injuries.

Hugs to you.

What a horrible thing to witness! I remember once witnessing an auto accident where one of the cars flipped over & still skidded down the road about 500 yards! I was so shaken over that scene that I had to go home! I couldn't even drive! I can't even imagine how I'd feel after viewing what you did!

Why don't you grab a nice glass of wine & then go to bed & rest. And as others have said, you probably did save lives by calling 911 so quickly!

You hear about horrible stories like this, but never think they could be real. So sorry to hear it.

My fathers grew up in VB and all his siblings and their kids are still there, we spend a lot of time there. I am not sure where Sandbridge beach is though. My uncle had a beach house on 73rd and Atlantic so that is the area I know the best.

Is this a big deal on the local news?

Sometimes building permits seem like a pain in the butt, but this really bring to light how important codes are and proper worksmanships.

At least VB and Norflok has some great medical facilities. Hopefully the victums will get good care.

You did all you could, you did the right thing.

That is truly the most horrible thing i've ever read. I am so sorry, for you, for them, for everyone. What a terrible night. :grouphug:

Denise - thanks for posting the link. Luckily - none of the injuries are life threatening. What an awful thing to happen at a wedding reception - or any other event for that matter.

To the OP - I second to grab a glass of wine, try to get some rest tonight.

Thanks all. I did have a glass of wine...while watching the rescue workers after I got off the phone with 911.

someone asked if it made the news and it did and i was interviewed for it. I had called the station and told them about it and they wanted my name and number. I gave it to them not realizing they would want me to be interviewed. Apparetnly I was teh only witness to be interviewed so they got the scoop.

I was going to take a hit off the nyquil tonight before bed, but i came home to two sick kids (left with one sick, came home to two). So have to listen for the kids.

Thanks for all the hugs. I can really use them. I can't believe how this has shaken me up.

good night all, thanks again.

Tara - :grouphug: So, sorry you had to witness something like this. It must have been awful. I'm sure your quick thinking made a world of difference in the outcome. Hope you were able to get some rest. I know that scene will play over and over in your mind but, know that you did make a difference.
