I Wish I Would've Packed More Stretchy Pants - Deluxe Dining Report April 2016 - 6/30 LE CELLIER

LAST DAY UPDATE!

YOU GUYS.

I am so sorry I haven't finished this darn review already! I haven't been spending much time on the Disboards as of late due to wedding planning (we are down to just over 2 months AHH so much to do, so little time, and I'll probably be fat and drunk by the time this thing rolls around!) and exam-taking. I just took my 5th actuarial exam and fortunately, I passed, but I have been doing nothing lately aside from working, studying, and wedding planning!

I could use a trip to WDW right about now.. :rolleyes1

Anyways, I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! Where were we... oh yes, our last day of vacation :sad2: For some reason Justin said we had to fly back to Pennsylvania and go to work the next day.. what the... what!? Why? I totally thought my proposition to just stick around in Orlando for a while would work but apparently not.

I had made a reservation for Trails End that morning. I love the bread pudding at Boma and I have heard that the Trails End breakfast buffet is decent and that you can find the bread pudding with pecan praline sauce there. We have also never been over towards Fort Wilderness, so I thought that would be fun. Unfortunately we decided to cancel the day before since we wanted to sleep in and take our time that morning. We had to check our luggage, we'd be out all day without a spot to crash, and we had a late flight at night with a 2 hour drive home (this is getting sadder by the minute). So some extra sleep won out and we'll make the trek over to FW some other time.

So sorry, bread pudding, I love you so & I'll see you next time.:sad::sad:

That left us, unfortunately, with 2 extra table service credits. I know what you're thinking.

FOR SHAME. Ugh.

We "slept in" until like 7:30 and slowly got our things ready to go. We decided to use one of our credits at the food court on breakfast. I told Justin we could swap our drink for a side such as oatmeal (he would NEVER do such a thing) or a muffin. He was all "Why would I do that when I could drink OJ?" :sad2: Justin, I'm trying to milk the dining plan here, go with it, okay? Who was I to try and suck the fun out of his breakfast!

Knowing we had a ton of snack credits to burn, and that all we had done in the last 3 days was eat, I was ok with missing out on some extra food.

I don't know if I've ever said that before in my life.

At Everything Pop we just had the Pop waffles. They came with bacon, sausage, and fresh strawberries. Sometimes I'm hesitant to get fruit at places like this because I can't stand when fruit gets mushy and syrupy. That can especially happen with berries. These were really good, though! The waffle meal was $8.19 and Justin had an OJ, which was $3.99.

For some reason I don't have a picture of these - sorry!

We headed off to Magic Kingdom for the morning, where we used some of our remaining credits on a few snacks.

Starbucks on Main Street - Justin got his new favorite, passion iced tea lemonade, and I had a caramel frappuccino. We both sprung for a Venti - you can get a Venti with your snack credits! I didn't finish mine, but Justin's was super refreshing on a hot day.

Since we had a late lunch at Le Cellier, Justin decided on one last Mickey pretzel. I decided on a churro. We got them at the snack carts in Frontierland.

I had never eaten a churro in Frontierland before. It was pretty good! I'm not sure I'd seek it out again but if we were hungry in the Frontierland area, I'm sure we'd grab a pretzel and a churro again.

On our way out, we used a snack credit on a Mickey rice krispy treat at the Confectionary. I have to have at least one while I'm in WDW.

I'm proud to say this guy made it all the way back to PA with his ears still attached!

We headed towards Epcot for one last stroll through the World Showcase before our late lunch at Le Cellier. We got a bag of caramel popcorn at Karamell Kuche (again.. one of those things I cannot do without!) that we (I) snacked on in the next few days at home.

We decided that, to use up our last table service/quick service credit, we'd get 3 snacks at the bakery in France. It's one of my favorite spots! Out of the last 3 times we've been there, we've saved our snacks for the next morning. They make for a nice breakfast even if they're not as fresh as they could have been!

Pro tip: At the bakery, you get in line and then that one line breaks into 2. It's kind of like a horseshoe where the bottom (front of the line) is all hot foods, sandwiches, salads, etc, and then either side is all baked goods. Both sides are exactly the same, so whoever waits on you will show you everything that's there!

I felt bad for the poor woman behind us, she said "are you waiting for someone to help you?" and we said yes, and she jumped in front of us and just stood in front of the bakery line. She didn't realize that the CM that takes your order can do the sandwiches and the pastries, too, so I think she stood there a good bit until someone helped her.

We decided on 3 items:

919214C2-83D0-453B-8895-84803CD6698B_zpsv61hthyh.jpg

Roule Lard Au Fromage - $3.95

This is consistently one of my favorite things. It's just a big ol' bacon and cheese roll. It's pretty big and a little greasy. Kind of has the consistency of pizza dough. I liked it cold but we've also heated it up and it's good hot as well. This was my pick and I had it for breakfast the next morning at my desk.

Ah. Disney dining at my desk!

Justin chose the ever-so-fancy biscuit au chocolate.. such a foreign delicacy!

I kid, but this is a really good (and really large) chocolate chip cookie. It's $3.50 and he loved it.

For our third item, we chose to share the chocolate chip brioche.

699FFE6C-120D-460F-B4EC-06E977E1F667_zps2tlvtlo2.jpg

Brioche - Chocolate chip brioche, $3.50

This also made it home with us and we snacked on it at some point. It stayed nice and soft. It was definitely something unique from our regular choices and we'd get it again. This is the inside, but I'd say it's as big as one of those big cookies, but it's nice and puffy too.

Altogether our purchases at Boulangerie Patisserie totaled $10.95. Not our best for combining 3 snack credits, but we were on our way to lunch and we didn't care about getting the "best value". The CM who rang us up didn't fully understand what we were trying to do, but the girl next to her had a really good idea of the dining plan so she knew exactly what to do.

A good way to spend our last few snack credits! And as a bonus, all 5 items made it into our backpack and through security.. the TSA people probably though we were nuts!

Up next.. Lunch at Le Cellier.
DINING PLAN BREAKDOWN: We used 1 TS credit (converted to a QS on the deluxe dining plan), 5 snack credits, and 1 TS (converted to 3 snack credits).

Dining Plan:
Everything Pop - Waffles, $8.19
Everything Pop - OJ, $3.99
Starbucks - Venti Frappuccino, $5.79
Starbucks - Venti Iced Tea Lemonade, $3.99
Confectionary - Mickey Krispy, $5.79
Mickey Pretzel and Cheese - $6.00
Churro - $4.00
Boulangerie Patisserie - $10.75 for 3 pastries

Popcorn at Karamell Kuche - $5.99

Total Dining Plan = $550.52
Total OOP = $103.91 plus tip

LE CELLIER

I hate that I wasn't timely about this, because how am I even supposed to remember all of the finite details of Le Cellier 2+ months later?!

First off, we walked through the beautiful gardens of Canada to get to our destination.

Justin had been begging me to book Le Cellier for what feels like at least a year. We have probably booked it and cancelled it in lieu of something else at least twice. But finally, we'd get there! We have had the same experience with California Grill - still haven't been there.

We walked into Le Cellier and waited in a little holding area with some seating before they could walk us into the basement. I guess "Le Cellier" stands for "The Cellar" which just sounds like a fancy French way of saying "come dine in our dark basement." All snarkiness aside, the theming is quite interesting and done well. I wouldn't expect anything less from Disney.

Inquiring minds want to know - do all Canadians eat dinner in their basement?

(I'm kidding - I hope that wasn't offensive to any of our Canadian Dis friends!)

One thing I will say about this restaurant, is how passionate the CM's are about their heritage. We had a really sweet CM, a young girl whose name I can't recall. But she was so pleasant and kind and explained all of the different provinces to us.

They start you off with some bread. I think Justin and I both had Diet Coke to drink.

I did feel a little guilty about drinking Diet Coke with my fancy filet, but not that guilty. They had some really great sounding ice wine flights, but neither of us wanted to drink because it was hot and we had lots of traveling ahead of us. Actually that sounds like the perfect reason to drink.

Each of the breads had a special explanation. I wish I remembered them all. We had 2 pieces of pretzel bread, the story behind those was something around an Oktoberfest festival. We also had, I think a sourdough, and what I think was a pumpkin seed bread.

We were really anticipating the pretzel bread because we both love anything pretzel ish. It definitely didn't disappoint. I also liked the sourdough. I'm not keen on the pumpkin seed bread but it was okay.

Now what to eat while dining in the basement?

We both knew ahead of time what we'd choose for our appetizer..

The Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup!

I actually thought all of the apps sounded great, especially the snow crab and pear salad, but I couldn't pass up the chance to have the cheddar cheese soup.

8DA7B69C-87C2-454F-973A-C91412F958A4_zpsjho2iwg1.jpg

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup - Moosehead's beer, Nueske's applewood smoked bacon - $11

I don't know that any bowl of soup is worth $11, but this was really delicious. I've had it at F&W before and it was great then too, but even better here. Thick and creamy, without being glue-y, and you could definitely pick up on the smoked bacon and Moosehead.

Le Cellier also offers Poutine, which unfortunately can NOT be swapped out for an app since they're considered an Enhancement.

We really wanted to try it so we decided to try the bacon cheddar poutine.

Did we need these? Oh heck no. But was it worth it, oh yeah.

For our entrees, Justin was between the Rib Eye and the Strip Steak. He ended up going with the Rib Eye because he loves potatoes and carrots.

Sorry if these photos are a little blurry!

Having been drooling over Le Cellier photos for approximately 2 years now, I couldn't leave without getting the infamous Le Cellier Filet.

CD238E8C-B328-4114-9BD4-46AFB1261938_zps1rwxyn61.jpg

Le Cellier Filet Mignon - AAA Canadian Tenderloin, Mushroom Risotto, Toy Box Tomatoes, Truffle Butter Sauce, $52

In all, Justin liked his steak but he didn't love it. He said the cut of beef was good. He loves potatoes and carrots, but he said they were lacking in this dish. There weren't many, although the cut of steak was pretty large. I on't think he was overly impressed, but he wasn't disappointed either. He likes his steak medium well and this was prepared just like he prefers it.

I felt the same way about my dish. The filet was fine. I ordered it medium and it was WAY too rare. I can usually do medium rare with plenty of pink, but it was rare to to the point of mushiness. It was completely magenta on the inside. I ate the corners and couldn't eat the middle of it - which was fine because I was getting full anyways and wanted to save room for dessert. I'm not one to complain so I didn't send it back, but it was definitely too rare for my liking. Definitely more rare than any other steak I've ever ordered!

The tomatoes and the risotto were pretty good. I don't know that I'd get this again, only because while I like truffle, it was really overpowering. Everything just had a super truffle-y taste. I am sure those who love truffle (and I usually do) would enjoy this, but I didn't love it.

I hate to sound like such a party pooper! I swear we really did enjoy our meal here. I think I just had a slight miss with my entree. By this point in our trip we were tired from eating at restaurants so that may have also had an effect on our feelings toward Le Cellier.

Funny story. I mentioned before that this place was dark and cramped. The people next to us were not even an arm’s length away. We were seated against the wall where one side was a booth (Justin sat on this side) and the other side was regular chairs (I sat on this side). The family next to us was a mom, dad, and their son who I would say was no older than 4.

It was hot out, nearing 3 PM, and I could tell the little one was done. His parents were so very nice and tried so hard to get him to sit up, but he was not having it! He was laying down on the booth between his dad and Justin. His parents kept correcting his behavior and apologizing to us, we’d smile and say “No, that’s ok!” – Really he was a sweet kid you could just tell he needed a nap and didn’t want to be there.

So their food comes out and his kids meal was French fries and grilled chicken breasts. He stands up, grabs the chicken breast off the plate, gets super wide eyed and yells “MOM. I CAN’T EAT THIS CHICKEN, IT’S DIRTY!”

I almost spit out my drink I was laughing so hard. I apologized to the woman and said “I am so sorry for laughing but that was hysterical” and she laughed and said she was sorry. Apparently he hadn’t eaten grilled chicken before, or maybe he had never seen it pre-cut with all of the grill marks, but mom had to explain to him that it was perfectly fine, not dirty at all, and the grill marks showed that it was cooked on a grill.

Given all of our encounters with children in restaurants on this trip, this was by far the funniest.

Onto dessert!

I love chocolate and coconut, so I chose the Nanaimo Pie.

F4FB1D3D-5AFB-4240-9F07-6400066803FF_zpsjc0hbakj.jpg

Nanaimo Pie - Chocolate hazelnut crust, coconut custard, cream anglaise - $11.00

Wow! This was one of the better table service desserts I've had. If I ever dined at Le Cellier again, I'd definitely have to get this! It was nice and cold, creamy, and coconutty. A nice mix between a custard-y dish and a frozen dessert. It was so delicious.

de08dd90-405f-4e14-9b3a-d7a7f3b08f89_zpsr0btk5ep.jpg

I also thought the cheesecake sounded great, but I'm glad I ultimately chose the Nanaimo pie!

Justin decided to try the Trifle. We saw a few neighboring diners with the same dessert and it looked really neat.

B854096F-8401-43FF-8578-6D52D139CB63_zpskf2ffuqz.jpg

Chocolate Whisky Trifle - Malted Milk Panna Cotta, Caramel Popcorn, Whiskey Caramel Sauce, Buttered Popcorn Gelato, $11

The server pours the whiskey caramel sauce over the dessert and it gets nice and smoky! Definitely an entertaining presentation. He enjoyed it but doesn't really like caramel. He wanted the Chocolate Moose from the kids menu, but he thought it was ice cream and when I told him no.. it's "moose".. he was upset. Poor guy was looking really forward to eating the Chocolate Moose! Ha!

Overall, I was underwhelmed. The service was great. the atmosphere was fun. The sides, apps, bread, and dessert were outstanding. I just don't think that our steaks were anywhere close great quality for $100 worth of steak. I see a lot of people ask "Le Cellier or Yachtsman?" "Le Cellier or Narcoossee's?" etc.. and I have to say for that price I'd choose Narcoossee's or Yachtsman first ANY DAY. I also think it may have something to do with the atmosphere - this is in a theme park, which is a positive and a negative. I think I preferred the overall atmosphere and food much better at Narcoossee's and Yachtsman, and even Flying Fish.

So we're glad we tried Le Cellier. We'll definitely go back - but I think it would be fun to go back for drinks/apps/dessert as opposed to a meal. I just can't fathom paying $100 for steaks that neither one of us were really impressed with.

Well.. I guess that's a wrap!! We headed back to Pop to hop on the Magical Express for our flights back to Pennsylvania. And, a mere 8 hours later, I was sitting in my chair at work wishing I was back in WDW!

I'll be back for a wrap up post or two to summarize what we spent and our overall thoughts!! :) Thank you for joining in with us!!
DINING PLAN BREAKDOWN: We used 4 Table Service credits. Everything here was on the dining plan, excluding our Poutine, which we paid for OOP.

Dining Plan: $163.35
Total Dining Plan = $713.87

OOP: Poutine, $10.65

Total OOP = $114.56 plus tip

"Inquiring minds want to know - do all Canadians eat dinner in their basement?"

Not as a general rule, no. Unless you live in a basement apartment (quite common), of course. I have been to a few pubs in basements though. And restaurants that have party rooms in their basements.

Good review! I have zero desire to eat at Le Cellier. I feel like the soup is the selling point and I can get a fantastic one at a pub near where I live. I can also get amazing poutine. So no need to trqvel al the way to Disney for those things, I'll concentrate on the food I can't get here. Sorry your experience was only "ok", not what you want from a signature.

We are not big fans of LeCellier either. We've been there a number of times over the years and just don't get why everyone raves about it. It definitely is not worth 2 dining credits.

So you were gone from the DISboards for a while, and so was I! Glad our return coincided so that I could finish reading your updates! I feel the same as you regarding LeCellier. I use to love it. Once it went to two dining credits I didn't think it was worth the cost anymore. It is a fun experience to eat there though, and I prefer to use my TIW card for the discount rather than two table credits. This way I get to order what I want, and not be restricted to the dining plan rules. Great review! I really enjoyed traveling along, and can't wait for your next dining report!

Thanks for this.
I am getting back into the swing of the DIS (I got married at WDW on 10/10/10 - and went back Xmas 2011, but have JUST booked a third trip Christmas 2017 at the POLY!)

We loved Tusker Breakfast, and are all looking forward to going back (and taking the smallest child, who didn't exist the first twice) - we LOVED Ohana, so much we switched from WL to Poly this time - and we also loved Le Cellier, but, back then it was a 1TS Credit. Not so suer about doing t now it counts as 2.

Would live to try the Nanaimo Pie! Looks and sounds delish. Unfortunately, we are a chicken/shrimp type of family so I will never have the pleasure.

Nice to see you back to finish this up! Although I was hoping for a more favorable review of Le Cellier :( We went once a few years ago and enjoyed it but since then, reviews have mostly gone downhill. Still every once in awhile I get it in my head to try again........thinking it probably won't happen though. Too many places yet to try that get better reviews!
Hope all the wedding planning is going well :goodvibes

It's funny that you say you wouldn't get the risotto again because of the truffle being overpowering. It's that risotto that made me fall in love with Le Cellier in the first place! Forget the filet! Give me risotto and more risotto!!!

Your review of Le Cellier makes me very happy with our decision to go there on our next trip only for appetizers! We live in Alberta, Canada, and can get amazing steak at our local grocery store, so I don't feel the need to spend $50+ on a steak at a restaurant. But I'm so intrigued by their version of a poutine (which is not at all a typical Canadian poutine) and also that soup - although I worry it'll taste too much like Moosehead (it's brewed in my home province of New Brunswick, so I've had my fair share of that beer and have never liked it).

I loved all of your reviews! That fireworks cruise looks interesting, but not many of those desserts really stood out to me (but they looked nice).

I would totally go back to Le Cellier for appetizers, and maybe even dessert! I fully agree that $50, in this case, was far too much for a steak. I think the poutine was delicious - interesting that it's not similar to what you would find at home! What is your poutine like? They also had I think a french onion poutine and a traditional poutine with gravy. I would've loved to try the gravy poutine, but my fiance prefers the bacon/cheese combo. Maybe some other time!

I don't remember a super strong Moosehead taste. It definitely had the smokiness from the bacon and it did have a hint of the beer taste but hopefully you enjoy it and it's not too overpowering! :)

I definitely agree about the dessert party. We probably wouldn't do something like that again. I have a huge sweet tooth, I LOVE dessert, but I didn't care for a majority of the desserts they offered. They were all kind of odd!!

Sorry I have been MIA, but I am all caught up on your review. I am so glad your reviewed LC. Every since it became a Signature I have not been back as I really love the Yachtsman and reviews like yours confirm I am not missing anything.

Not sure what the pinkish stuff is on top, but we loved it. It added a little sweetness with some crunch.

I just read your reviews. Loved it!
In case you were still wondering what the pink stuff was, it's pickled ginger(called beni shoji in Japanese.) Not the same as sushi ginger(gari), but it's a different kind of pickled ginger.

Oh for sure! Those were definitely the best parts. We all have those "ok" experiences, and there were more than enough great experiences to outweigh a so-so one. :)

We are not big fans of LeCellier either. We've been there a number of times over the years and just don't get why everyone raves about it. It definitely is not worth 2 dining credits.

Not at all! I can't stomach spending $50/steak for that. Heck I ate at Texas Roadhouse last weekend and for $20 a person I really enjoyed my meal, haha!

It definitely was a fun experience. The ambiance was great. I hope Dom continues to improve! :)

Thanks for this.

THE POLY, YAY!!!! That will be amazing!!!

Staying at the Poly and having immediate access to Ohana was probably one of the best parts, haha!

Would live to try the Nanaimo Pie! Looks and sounds delish. Unfortunately, we are a chicken/shrimp type of family so I will never have the pleasure.

The Nanaimo pie was definitely one of the highlights. I didn't expect dessert to be so good!

Nice to see you back to finish this up! Thanks! It is stressful, such as the people who bypass the "NAME: _______" and "Please initial next to your meal choice" lines and just send you a blank card with a "2" on it, HAHA! And the cousins that keep coming out the woodwork that we forgot to invite.. OOPS! I agree, I have heard so many positive reviews but I have definitely seen some downhill reviews too. Bummer. I definitely enjoyed Narcoossee's and Yachtsman more.

Really enjoyed your reviews, thank you :goodvibes

Aw, thank you! I appreciate you reading! :)

It's funny that you say you wouldn't get the risotto again because of the truffle being overpowering. It's that risotto that made me fall in love with Le Cellier in the first place! Forget the filet! Give me risotto and more risotto!!!

Haha!! If you're a truffle lover, this is totally the risotto for you ;) Have you ever had the Carciofi pizza at Via Napoli? It has truffle oil, artichokes, and a few types of cheese. Heavenly.

Sorry I have been MIA, but I am all caught up on your review. I am so glad your reviewed LC. Every since it became a Signature I have not been back as I really love the Yachtsman and reviews like yours confirm I am not missing anything.

Hey Lori! Thanks for reading. I definitely think Yachtsman beats out LC! Glad we tried it but I won't be in a hurry to go back.

I just read your reviews. Loved it!
In case you were still wondering what the pink stuff was, it's pickled ginger(called beni shoji in Japanese.) Not the same as sushi ginger(gari), but it's a different kind of pickled ginger.

THANK YOU! :) I was wondering what it was called, but that makes perfect sense. I am generally not really into the sushi ginger, but I think the pickled-ness of this is what made me like it.

Hope all the wedding planning is going well. You all must really be in the home stretch now!!!!!

Sorry your last meal was a bit of a bust, but glad Justin finally got to have Le Cellier. We've considered it a few times, but in the sea of signatures it just hasn't quite made the cut yet. Which sadly means no cheddar cheese soup or poutine for me yet

Ok - this is HILARIOUS!!!!

Read all of your reviews today and loved them. Ohana is one of my favorite places; I like both breakfast and dinner there. Unfortunately, we are only doing the breakfast next trip. :( Your review of 50's Prime Time also makes me sad we aren't planning on it this time around. My kids don't enjoy the humor there (teenagers... hmmph!). We are doing Tusker House for lunch, which is one of the best lunch buffets ever, I think.... even for me, who is not an adventurous eater. Enjoyed seeing your take on Biergarten, since we'll be trying it for the first time in January. Le Cellier is one of our favorites (we are huge steak fans), and I'm a huge fan of the mushroom risotto; found a recipe for it online and have made it a couple of times since our last trip.
