I really had no plans to write a dining review. I have been chatting with some great people on this board for over a year. They planned a 2nd annual May Meet and I got talked into going…even though I have a big trip planned with my daughter next week LOL.
However I was so incredibly impressed with the food I ate this past weekend…from the POP food court to California Grill that I decided to write a review of the food. I do not have any pictures, because as I said I had no intention of writing about the food. I expected the food to be ok...maybe good...I did not expect the great food I had all weekend.
I am not a foodie by any means so my descriptions may be pretty basic. However I made a point this trip of trying things (such as seafood which I do not like) if it was offered to me.
I will review the following restaurants/counter service/snacks:
Day 1 (in this post):
Starring Rolls Cafe
Pop food court
Kona
Mizner's Lounge
Day 2:
Pop food court
Petal Bar
Citrico's
Day 3:
Sunshine Seasons
Epcot snack
CA Grill
Day 4:
Pop food court
We arrived very late Thursday the 14th. After my friend Andrea (Matterhorn) and I wandered around MCO trying to find Magical Express we finally made it to POP. The welcome wagon was waiting, which was about 6 of our DIS friends at the bowling pin pool at 1am. We made it to bed around 2am…so no Disney food this day just airport food.
Day 1: Friday May 15th
First thing we did was ride Tower of Terror and Rockin Roller Coaster. After that I needed some food to settle my stomach. Breakfast consisted of a chocolate croissant at Starring Rolls in Hollywood Studios. 3 of us also split a fruit tart. Both were very good. The croissant was fresh and flaky. The fruit on the tart was also fresh and very tasty.
We headed back to the pool to cool off. I had a light lunch since I knew I would be having a big dinner. I grabbed a fruit bowl from the POP food court and picked up my mug. I also had a slice or two of my roommates POP pepperoni pizza. Everything was fine…not great, but good.
Dinner that night was a DIS Boards dinner with about 20 people at Kona in the Polynesian. I will admit looking at the menus online I wasn’t very excited about this meal. Well I was so wrong. I ordered the starbuck’s coffee drink from the standard drink menu. I don’t remember what it was called, I ordered a coffee drink because I needed caffeine. I think it had kahlua and bailey’s, very yummy. I had two of those to try and wake myself up for the Monorail bar crawl coming up after dinner.
The bread arrived and OH MY GOD!! I have read many food reviews where people rave about the bread but for some reason that honey macadamia nut butter never sounded very appealing. Well I could not stop eating it. Sweet and soft and melted right into the soft bread.
I did not have a starter, but had a bite of the duck pot stickers. It was good but I am not much of a duck person so one bite was enough for me. However, I wanted to make sure I tried new things on this trip so I was glad I at least tried it.
For dinner I ordered the pan asian noodles, below is a description I found online:
Pan Asian Noodles - Asian egg noodles with sliced chicken, pineapple, seasonal vegetables, and a housemade sweet and sour sauce $16.99
I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was skeptical about this dish until I finally took a bite. The noodles were not the thick kind you usually get with asian food, but more like an angel hair pasta size. When it was placed in front of me and I saw that I wasn’t expecting to really care for the dish. Well I ate the whole thing! Tangy, yummy sweet and sour sauce, perfectly cooked noodles, thinly sliced chunks of chicken cooked perfectly . Even though I was getting very, very full there was no way I was leaving any behind.
Even though I had stuffed myself on dinner I could not say no to the Kilauea Torte. A dark chocolate lava cake served with raspberries and whipped cream. Mmm I love chocolate and this did not disappoint. Nice dark chocolate taste with a warm fudgy center. My only criticism is I was so full and it was a large dessert…as much as I wanted to finish it I couldn’t.
We had a monorail bar crawl planned for after dinner. Well I was so full I could not drink anything besides water when we were at the Tambu Lounge. We moved on to the Mizner’s Lounge at Grand Floridian. The poor staff wasn’t really sure to do when a group of 20 loud Diser’s walked in all wanting a drink LOL. I ordered a sangria…it was a nice sangria but very large. I was still so full from dinner and we did not stay long, so I ended up only drinking about half of it.
