I am new to the mom-thing and learning that I am a bit of a fuddy-duddy.

I am just wondering why an 8 year old (based on OP's siggie) needs a cell phone. Is that common? Just curious...

Don't feel bad, I was wondering the same thing! My DD is 8 1/2 and has never asked for one. I am a pretty young mom and consider myself entirely too hip for a mom lmao: ) and I still see no reason for her to have a phone...shoot we don't even have a house phone for her to use.. May Op out those ages a while ago?

My eight year old niece has a cell phone. Her dad and step-mom (my sister) live in another state, and her mom objects to the cost of her calling them. So they bought her a cell phone so that she could call them (and the rest of her family on this side) without incurring charges on her home phone.

My dd, age 12, has a tracfone, prepaid. It comes in handy because her school has her playing in the high school marching band, so she's often at away games. Even though we usually follow her to wherever she's playing, it's much easier to keep track of her with the cell.

OP, my sister dropped her cell in the bathtub while she was in labor (guess she was distracted!) It was working again by the time she came home with my niece. On the other hand, my dh washed my digital camera, and it never recovered, though the memory card was fine. (And yes, I blame that on him, since I had dropped a cake and gotten icing on the jeans. I kicked them off, and ran to change, and by the time I came back down, the jeans were merrily washing with the camera in the pocket. I didn't anticipate him being that efficient about cleaning - never happened before or since! )

I washed mine twice in one summer . . . the second time I was in line at Verizon, I was behind a woman who dropped hers in the pool and in front of a woman who dropped hers in her daughter's fruit punch at Sesame Place!!
I sure wish I knew what brands all these pp's have used that kept right on working! I tried to dry mine out for a week with no luck! Didn't know about the rice, though! One tip I got from a kind Verizon employee though was to save old phones and they will reactivate them for free if your new one has been damaged! When I told that to the other absent-minded moms in line with me, there was a different employee at the desk who was not too happy with me as he was trying to sell one of the moms a whole new phone! I told him an honest colleague of his had given me the tip!

LMAO.. It's Mom Brain at its finest!! I washed mine last year, it happens to the best of us. I wonder how much Verizon makes on us moms...

Note to self: Buy the warranty! (I have a feeling mine is going to end up "swimming" in the toilet, bathtub, or swimming pool. DD is a water baby!)

I was told by the guy at T-mobile that a lot of KINDERGARTENERS have cell phones here! It was funny... DD (20 mos) wandered into the T-Mobile store, and of course I was like "Come on, Alana, you're too young for a cell phone." He proceeded to say "Not by much!" Yikes! Oh well. Can't fight it. For 10 bucks a month to know where my kid is... I'll pay that when the time comes.

I think this makes me a not-young non-hip mom!

Put in ziploc bag for a week with dry rice, change out rice daily. works like charm. Mine has swam quite a few times

No only has my son's phone been through the washer and drier twice, but it spent most of last winter in a snow bank. It had fallen out of his pocket near the front door. We found it once the snow melted.

Every time it has gotten wet I just take out the battery and put it in a baggie of rice. I can't believe the thing still works!

We were not so lucky with the ipod that I washed.

My oldest did not get a cell phone until he was 13 years old and he only got a Tracfone due to being a soccer referee. He had that in case I had to leave the soccer field. He was still supervised by friends at the soccer field but had the phone in case he needed to get ahold of me. My daughters are 10 (11 in May) and 6 and neither will be getting a phone anytime soon. My 10 year old has a lot of friends with cell phones but she knows she will NOT be getting one for quite awhile. I do not feel there is a need for one for a child and when her classmates are playing with them in class it is a disruptioin to all.

I know, I know... I thought about that when I posed it. We have a family plan with unlimited texting and his phone is only 10.00 a month, otherwise he wouldn't have one.

Well, it's been a few days and no sign of life in the phone. It's a Razor. So my mom had an extra phone and he was using that until last night when the screen looked like it had a crack in it. Here we go again. Now my DH called from out of town and said that HIS phone battery is acting up & not holding a charge. They say bad things come in threes, in this case it's with three cell phones.

Sorry your phone didn't come back to life. The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I had lent my cell phone to my oldest son and when he came home he forgot to put it on the counter and left it in his pants pocket. I washed it. I let it dry out in rice and really I only let it dry about 12 hours before I tried it and it worked. It was just a tracfone but I had just added minutes that I didn't want to waste.

I am still holding out hope. I did the same thing a few years ago with my daughters phone. She was so mad at me, and then got even more mad when I wouldn't replace it the next day. We were heading to Gatlinburg and stopped off to visit my Mom, and she ended up staying there with my Mom. Well, half way up to Gatlinburg her phone started to work again, and her little sister called her from it. It was funny. I was just hoping that this one would start to work. It's only 3 months old. I'll check it again tomorrow.



In the mean time, I am going to look for a refurbished phone. He is to young to pay a lot of money for a phone, that has been proven here.

I have lost count of exactly how many phones I've washed, but it has been at least four over the past 10 years or so. Most did recover after a few days of drying out, but not all of them.

we do hold onto "old" phones now (if they are in working order) and that has been a big moneysaver. Better to have an older/less than cool phopne than no phone at all, right?

Now that we both have iPhones, I really try to be careful. No way i can afford to replace those babies at full price.

I can't believe it but I washed my sons cell phone tonight in the washing machine. I am just sick and I feel so bad about it. I took the battery out and tried to dry it. I also have it sitting in a container of rice b/c my mom said that it would bring the moister out. I hope that she is right. I guess we will know tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed for me.

I have already done this once, a few years ago and the phone, a different phone, started to work two days later. I pray, and I do mean pray, that it works this time. It's a brand new phone, and no... it's not insured.

Why do I do stupid things like this?

UM....I'd say it's your son's responsibility to keep track of his phone and empty his pockets.....I'd ask him that last question.

Okay just saw that he's eight....split the difference, it's both of y'alls fault.

My brother has two phones, when one of the twins is going to be away from him he sends the extra phone with them. The are 9 1/2 and have been doing this about a year now. They are very responsible with the phone and have not left it in a pocket or lost it. They do occasionally fight over who's going to carry it, but that's being a kid.

It's mainly my fault so I will replace it, but I am still giving the other phone time to dry out. It's in a zip lock bag full of rice. I checked it earlier and still no luck. How long do you think it would take? This happened Friday night and I have checked it every day with no luck.

I have a Motorola K-Razor. My phone was acting up last fall and not holding a charge at all. I took it in to Verizon and told them what was going on. The guy took my battery out of my phone and laid it flat on the counter and then spun it. The battery had bulged out so it wasn't flat any longer. He said that Motorola knew there was a problem with the battery and replaced it for free. Maybe that is your problem???? All I know is that it was great to not have to buy a new phone or new battery before my "New every 2."

Immediately seperate the battery from the phone and place both in a seperate container with rice, yes I said rice....

YUP! I learned this AFTER I used a blow dryer, WRONGO!!!

I have had the phone in rice since Friday night. I put fresh rice in it last night, but I checked it this morning and still nothing.

I guess I will do something about it this weekend, mainly to give this phone a little longer, but it's not looking promising.

My son had his phone in his bathing suit pocket when he walked into the lake last year. It was the first day of a camping trip and I didnt have any rice along so he kept sitting it out in the sun. Well a week later and we are home and it is still not working. He recieves a new tracphone for his birthday. Well a couple weeks later he hears a sound in his room. He was so excited that his old phone all of the sudden started working again. He had a different feature on that one and like it better.

So it was almost a month later that his phone started working again and believe me he had been checking on it regularly for the first 10 days with no luck.
