We just returned from WDW and between dh, dd, ds & myself I think we ended up with over 60 plus pins from the week! Of course we are not serious collectors...just bought what struck our curiousitys...but ds had a blast trading with cm's. I wondered if the main "collectors" are ones that regularly go to WDW or if there are "at home" collectors as well. We wont get back to WDW more than once a year and I'd love to get more into the collecting before then!

Welcome to the board. I think 60+ pins acquired in one week de facto makes you a serious collector.

Yes, there are many of us that are "geographically challenged" and either make frequent trips or have developed friendships with those who are close to the parks.

There are many great people on this board and there are activites that we do to help us get over the times we aren't at the parks. Occasionally, there is a pin swap and there are also some pin chain letters.

Finally, there are other sites. Two of them are dizpins, where you can get the latest pin news on what is about to be released, and pinpics, which is a database of the pins and where you can do some Internet trading.

Again welcome to our little corner of the World.

WELCOME!
Hi Jen.....yep you got sucked in alright....I think I only bought 20 at the parks during my first Pin Trading exposure (Feb of 2000)......let us not EVEN talk about the ones I bought/traded for online tho once I got home!

As for my most recent trip to Disney....well.....60, 70......or maybe even 100 , who knows. I stopped counting as a way to preserve my sanity! :p

Anyway, Daber hits it right on the head. Via DIS, Dizpins, Pinpics, you can stay abreast of the latest in the pin trading world, plus participate in individual trades and group swaps online, and there are even local Pin Meets (read:meetings) where local collectors from the same geographical area can get together to trade pins, admire pins and just enjoy friendships!

Well, I personally would say that there are main collectors in both catagories. For instance Raulandpinboy (aka Ed) lives there and goes every weekend. Barb (luv2roam) and I live in what we call outer pin siberia! I would say the majority of the pin people around here do get to a disney park at least once a year. I haven't been in three so you can see there are some at homes here. I have great pin friends from here :) that really help me keep getting pins! For a little piece of metal it sure can scream !buy me! for long distances. Just don't wander to ebay or you will be sucked in. Welcome and hope you join our ranks....come to pin chat on Thursdays too.

Hello & Welcome Jen,

That's how it all starts, a pin here, a pin there, before you know it you are a collector. :)

What is it about the pins????

I'm not as into it yet as I could be... just bought a few pins for the first time during our last trip in july. I got a Mission Space one (had to... great ride), and my kids each got a pin, and hubby bought one for each "thrill" ride he braved. I'm wishing now I'd bought more, and had picked up the starter kits for the kids (we've gotten them started on collecting pressed pennies, and I'm thinking the pins would be fun too... but kids lose things easily if they don't have some place to put things!).

I looked on the Disneystore site for the starter kits, and they only have a Jiminy one... I was hoping to get a princess one for my DD and something like Buzz for my DS... anyone know where (besides WDW - cant make that trip again for a while!), that we could buy them?

I know that our actual "Disney" store in the mall had the princess lanyard starter kits a few weeks back...they were even clearanced! And they are not pictured on the disney.com site either.
