I was offered a part time job at our new Kohls store. Our son is a senior this year so I thought what the heck. I would see if I could get in and earn a little money for his continuing education. They called me and offered me the job. I was upfront and told them I have a two week vacation planned over Thanksgiving and I thought I should be upfront about it. She said they would have to call me back. I called them back 24 hours later and they said nope can't do that call us after you get back and we'll see if we have an opening. I would think being up front is better than taking the job and saying I'm going on vacation 2 weeks prior. Boy, I am disappointed. I really thought I was doing the right thing telling them. I have had this trip booked for 10 months, long before I thought about taking on another job and only 20 hours a week. This job was not worth cancelling a trip to Disney. Sorry, I just had to vent.

you have to remember in retail christmas can bust or help any store the time off your asking for is the busiest time ever in retail the day after thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year ;)

Having worked in retail as a manager, I will say that I would not have approved your vacation request after you were hired so you would have been left with the option of canceling your vacation or quitting (if you had gone anyway, I would have had to fire you.) It is better you know that now. As a retail manger I got 1/2 a day off a week between Thanksgiving and Christmas and NO one got vacation. (And yes, I fired a nice saleswoman who called me Dec 26 and told me she was "sick" Of course, the fact that she had screamed about not being able to go visit her family on Dec 26 for 2 weeks prior and the sound of the interstate in the background probably had something to do with it. I told her I needed illness proof -drs visit receipt!)

I think it was good that you were upfront with them. If you still want the job after your vacation, apply again :)

It's retail and the busy season. That is when they are hiring more people to cover. Even if you were hired they probably would have let you go, so apply again when you return.

Christmas season means "all hands on deck". I've done Christmas season at a dept. store & it was INSANE. It was store policy that no one got vacation time during that point. If you took vacation, you effective left your job or were fired. I understand your disappointment, but they can't really make an exception for you & no one else.

Reapply after you get back from your trip. By that point for my store, we had lost a good chunk of our Christmas temps. They either got picked up by security for stealing or they hated the job & just stopped coming in.

That's life in retail. Don't be too surprised when they ask you to work late, come in early, work on your days off etc, etc. If you refuse they always threaten to fire.

How could you possibly be mad about that? In the fall, they're hiring for the Christmas season. If you can't work on the busiest day of the year (day after T-sgiving), of course they don't want you!
