Good for you! Nothing upsets police officers more than a child being in danger.

Interestingly enough, I was at a breakfast this morning where Don Carey (MPD's police chief) spoke and said the best way to support law enforcement is to let them know what is going on.

Not where I live. I called 911 while driving next to a car that had a tiny baby sitting on the lap of the mother in the front seat (and no she wasn't nursing). The dispatcher said unless *I* wanted to press charges (why would *I* want to do that?) there is nothing they can do.

I'm glad the police did something where the OP lives. After thinking about it for a minute, maybe the van door was stuck and wouldn't close and maybe the driver thought it would be more safe to buckle the girls in the front? There is no excuse, but maybe that was his rationalization

summerluvv--Miss J and I live in the same area. Unbuckled children is not taken lightly in our county if not in the entire state.

The van door might have been stuck--but the seat presentation didn't seem to indicate that "darn the door was stuck--ride up here instead." And if he wrecked---the girls would have just had an expedited exit from the vehicle .

His travel pattern didn't indicate that there was an emergency that rendered it necessary to drive with the kids this way as he drove past a school..stopped for gas and then went back the opposite direction before turning to head to the interstate.

I think in your case---someone on that other thread talking of this very topic recently---the cops cannot write a ticket or anything unless they see the violation. So if the man either got away---or if the police had reached him while still at the gas station, they wouldn't be able to issue a citation--but they could render it difficult for them to get anywhere.

I don't understand the purpose of a restraint law if police won't at least address a complaint.

...On some idiot who thought it was to place his two obviously too short for the front seat beautiful girls....in the front passenger seat of a mini van. They were sharing one seatbelt. And the kicker--he was driving with the slider door open. My AC is broken too--but a convertable does not a mini-van make. The cherry on top was that there was a car seat in the middle of the 2nd row--but probably for an infant who thankfully wasn't riding with them.

Based on a thread of this topic in the last week or two...as he pulled across the street into a gas station, I decided to pull over and call 911. Then since I had nothing else better to do and there was plenty of traffic to protect me from any road rage, I followed him.

The guy was pulled over by two police officers.

No idea what happens to him at that point. Mostly--I hope the girls got home safely and he never endangers his children again.

Thank you whoever posted that initial thread--I never knew it was okay to call 911 before for this.

I posted a thread about calling 911 on someone with 5 kids not even buckled in last week.. if that was the thread you are talking about.. you're welcome, glad it may have saved 2 more kids from being hurt or worse.

Thanks Lauri--I do believe that was the thread.

So many times I've said "wish there was a cop around when you need one". I have been affirmed by my county that in the case of kids--they are just a phone call away.

I called the cops on our drive to WDW more than you want to know.

but the biggest kicker was the time we stopped in a rest area in South Carolina, and in front of us was a truck with a 5th wheel. They pulled in right before us, and with the X's truck we always parked in truck parking...anyway, we park they park, dad and mom get out

kids get out of the camper....none bigger than 10 by the looks

now mind you- this is illegal in EVERY state, you can NOT ride in a travel trailer....just cant do it.

I'm livid

We proceed to wait for them to leave, sure enough- each and every one of those 3 kids- youngest about 4-5 get back in the camper, kids in the truck...which was a crew cab, enough room for all of em...

I call 911, and stay behind the camper- no sooner we get on the highway up to travel speed here comes bubba in his cruiser, with his buddy behind him. They were at the rest area.

Not sure what happened, but I guarantee they got a ticket out of it

Not illegal here in Michigan, IF you have a way of keeping in contact with the riders in the camper: walkie talkers, cell phone

Same here - my BIL has a 5th wheel - they *don't* ride in it while driving, but could.

BTW - calling 911 about restraint violations? Every city I have ever lived in has a police *non emergency*number - wouldn't that be a better call? I know this could *become* an emergency situation, but it's not. I wouldn't feel right calling 911 about an irresponsible parent - but would call police dispatch/non emergency.

Lisa, DH said what then happened depended on the circumstances. As for the sliding door being opened, there isn't a Uniform Traffic Law that covers it, but a catch-all law such as Careless or Reckless driving could have been used.
