I just got back from a week in Virginia. I want to move there! It was fantastic! Great area, friendly people, just LOVED it! I'm not happy to be back in FL at all. Back to the rude people in this area I'm in, the rut of day to day stuff...which I know I would eventually have no matter where I live. But I'm really tired of living here, and after 15 years here...maybe I need the change! Anyone else ever feel like making this change no matter what area you like? Being that I'm in school, it might be a good time to do it!

Actually, I have always been very happy to live in New England, and in the area I am. There are folks who like change though.

I would caution you that being somewhere on vacation is a lot different from living and working there.

I'll trade with you. I live in VA and I'd give anything to move to FL. The people here move way too slowly for me.:rolleyes:

I was excited when I moved from my hometown in PA to GA over 10 years ago, although I'm really not happy in this area now. I love New England--IMHO, the most beautiful area in the country. My dh and I talk about moving every once in a while, but with my ds8 happy and doing well in school, having good friends here, etc....we'd probably only move if it were 100% necessary. Would love to move back to PA, too, so that ds could see his extended family more than he does now. It's exciting to think of the possibilities of starting over somewhere new. I liked VA when I visited, too. Have a friend in VA Beach, and really enjoyed my visit. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.:)

If I could move Chicago about 500-700 miles south I would be happy.... Too cold here, but I love the town!

I have felt that way every now and then. We lived in Michigan and hated it there.....to cold and nothing to do in our little town. When we got the chance to move to Florida we jumped at it. Even though this is a great great place to live I still get the urge to move to my dream place, which is out west to the mountains. Preferably Montana or Wyoming.

I had moved to Northern VA about 8 years ago and quickly returned to FL. But this time I was in Hampton Roads. Just a really great place in my book. And I have a friend in VA Beach. I drove down there twice this past week. Just loved it!!

People in VA move too slow for you, figment? Then you would HATE it in FL because they are much, much slower! I was thrilled with all the service I received in VA. Even my 10 year old DS commented on how fast the service was in restaurants! LOL! ;)

People there were courteous! They said excuse me if they bumped into you, thank you, please! I don't ever hear that in FL. People here just push you over and keep going without even an excuse me. :mad: And the military guys! Wheeeeeeeeeeew! I could just faint! :faint: Much better than the choice I have here. Too many senior citizens in this area. Give me the military guys any day! ;) :faint:

Ugh, I lost my post.

In summary, I say DO IT!

I could never go back to Va. Now I wouldn't mind moving north to Central Florida but no further.

Pin Wizard you are just in the wrong part of So Florida. Head for homestead. Much more friendly and polite. Cutler Ridge/Palmetto Bay isn't bad either.

Thanks, Jen! ;) Sorry you lost your post. This past week I did a lot of e-mailing off my cell phone. I would hit send...and it would basically tell me the connection was lost. Aaaauuugghh! So I would type it all and send it again. Then much later in the evening a friend said he received many duplicates! Hmmmmmmm...technology! Thanks for the vote on moving!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Really? I've always heard...don't move any further south!! :eek: And Homestead's base has been closed for years, right? In VA's paper a couple days ago, the front page mentioned closing bases! While we have guys in Iraq!!!??? Certainly hope they don't close my friend's base! :( If they do, he may not be in VA Beach too much longer. :( Why can't life be easy?

gshoemate-if you thought michigan was cold and there was nothing to do you don't want to live in Wyoming or Montana-try Colorado instead-same mountains, more temperate climate and more culture thanks to Denver and Colorado Springs. I am a Wyoming native and I love it-but having said that the entire population of the state of Wyoming is less than 500,000-you have to travel a long way for medical care, to get to a major airport or to do much shopping. Winters are cold, harsh and windy and if you move there from somewhere warm you will get a huge shock. Also the entire state is not mountains, a lot of it is plains. Same applies to Montana except the winters are colder and harsher. And the economy is really slow as both Wyoming and Montana are dependant on oil and gas, ranching and tourism. Also the cost of living in the west is much much higher than in the south

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip :D

I've lived here my entire life. It's an incredibly conservative state which is it's only downfall IMO. It's beautiful here :D Though I can tell you that no amount of money would ever get me to move to Northern VA. I'd live near the beach in a heartbeat though.

Which bases are they thinking of closing down? Hadn't heard that one.

It was on the front page of Saturday's Daily Press.

Area's bases likely to survive closings
They get high marks in critical areas

December 27, 2003

The Defense Department released this week a draft of its criteria for coming base-closing considerations, and Hampton Roads military installations - particularly those on the Peninsula - appear to enjoy some high marks in critical areas.

The criteria emphasize what the Pentagon calls joint war-fighting capabilities and training - the ability for different types of weapons and service members to conduct operations together. Military installations here have long boasted that capability.

Local military officials won't comment on the base-closure process, but they acknowledge some of their installations' strengths when matched up against the announced draft criteria.

"We already have a broad joint mission," said Cindy Your, a spokeswoman for Fort Eustis, a hub of military transportation. "Transportation is a very joint activity in the Department of Defense."

Congress now has about a month to comment on the draft criteria. In spring 2005, the Defense Department will make its official recommendations for closures.

The Pentagon will grade military installations on each of the following:

Current and future mission capabilities and the effect on the readiness of the Defense Department's forces, including the effect on joint war fighting, training and readiness;

Availability and condition of land, facilities and associated airspace at existing and potential locations;

Ability to mobilize;

Cost of operations and personnel implications;

Economic effect on existing communities;

The community infrastructure's ability to support forces, missions and personnel; and

The environmental effect of any move.

As Your said, the transportation services that Fort Eustis provides help joint war-fighting missions. Those services also help give the installation high marks on the mobilization criterion.

Fort Eustis, one of the Army's 15 "power-projection platforms," shares its acreage with units from every branch of the military. One of the most deployed units in the Coast Guard, Port Security Unit 305; a Marine Corps training unit; and an Air Force weather detachment are just a few of the 80 tenant units with joint missions based at Eustis.

Being a power-projection platform might be Eustis' strongest asset against this round of base closures. Projecting power means that the post has the ability, for example, to load trucks onto trains and get them to ports for shipping - making it one of the Army's hubs whenever there's a big deployment.

Fort Eustis also projects power by mobilizing reserve units when they're called up. More than 2,800 reservists left Eustis to support the war in Iraq. And 500 more are preparing to deploy to the Middle East.

Many of the Air Force's assets mobilized through Langley Air Force Base before, during and after the recent big military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Langley also will be the operations home for the Air Force's new F/A-22 Raptor jet fighters, the linchpin of the Air Force's combat strategy, which includes a significant joint war-fighting capability.

The Raptors could be moved to another base, but the Air Force is investing millions of dollars for training and maintenance sites for the new jets - all of which work in Langley's favor, according to the draft criteria.

With no real "forces" of its own to muster for war, Fort Monroe often has been identified as a target for a base closure. The Army Training and Doctrine Command - TRADOC, which analyzes and formulates military strategy - is there, but those people could be moved to other bases.

Yet, Fort Monroe officials talk of the proximity to other Hampton Roads installations, giving them access to high-ranking officers - and giving those officers access to TRADOC officials and others at the post.

Few other places could offer such proximity and access to service brass as Hampton Roads, including Air Combat Command at Langley and the different fleet commands at Norfolk Naval Station.

Of all the installations, Norfolk Naval Station probably has the most obvious safety nets against base closure. The base serves as home not only for the various Navy warships and accompanying personnel but also for the Joint Forces Command, a spearhead agency for the U.S. joint war-fighting strategy.

I do think we all get that feeling while away on vacation, part of the reason everyone takes vacations AWAY from where they are, wherever they happen to be. We all like it where we are not, and usually a vacation is all good times. Not saying VA isn't great, nor FL. When I am on trips, I usually always say I would like to move there, LOL. But having ones we like to be near also adds to the desire to be there.

BTW, I like your Christmas clip of you both there in your sig.

I grew up in Virginia Beach and the year I graduated my parents moved me to Central VA. I cant stand it here. The entire vibe is different. The area I live in is very clique oriented. If you arent a part of what we call the "kindegarten club"(people who have lived here all their lives) you dont belong and its very hard to find close friendsl. I think Virginia Beach and the Orlando area are very similar because they are melting pots of different origins and ethnic groups. I would love to either go back to Va Beach of Orlando. I would even settle for Jacksonville. Good luck though if you do move!!

Yeah they closed Homestead AFB and turned it into Homestead ARB after Hurricane Andrew, but that is not all that Homestead is. It is a great place to live and people are nice. I love the area. Close to the Keys, not in the City of Miami, far from Condo land. Bunch of good old rednecks down here. Just my speed unless I can move to Central Fla which is my dream.

A friend of my gf's just moved to VA- his kids and his brother are up there. And guess what? He's moving right back to FL!!!

Dan...Thanks! This year's Christmas pic with Richard. :) True...sometimes vacation places are very appealing. I've had a few things in mind as reasons to move. And one of the big reasons is that maybe it's FINALLY time to leave the place where Keith and I lived! For years I didn't want to leave that place. FL was where Keith and I came when we were first married. Hmmm...things change. :)

CindysGusGus...I LOVE Gus Gus! He's soooooooooooo cute! :) Someone else mentioned the same to me...central VA is much different and suggested not moving west of Richmond. So, if you would go back to VA Beach, I guess you liked it there! :Pinkbounc That's great to hear!! When we passed through Jacksonville the other day, it was COLD! Everyone had on coats! At the next stop they all had on shorts. LOL!

Talking Hands...ARB? A reserve base of some sort? I haven't heard that term yet. AF Reserve? Army Reserve? I have lived in FL 15 years now and have never been to the Keys! :eek:

Legs22...Why do I ALWAYS want to type Leggs????? LOL! Those double g's. ;) I did the same thing as your friend's friend when I went to Northern VA. My sister is up there, but it's not quite the place for me. However, being within a decent driving distance to see her would be great! :) She tells me it's a 4-5 hour drive from the Hampton area.
