I want to liquidate my entire 401K

No, not at all tempted, even as a passing thought. My retirement investments are for retirement, and nothing else. I'm not getting any younger ;) and retirement will be here before I know it.

Not tempted one bit. As far as I'm concerned, that money doesn't 'exist' until I hit retirement age. I had a Depression-era grandfather who put the fear of God into me about saving so I wouldn't retire broke. Can't say the same for his son (my father) who hardly has anything in retirement savings--and he had to retire early because his job laid him off when he was 61!

Does anyone feel like liquidating their entire 401K to either go back to school, open an orphange or pursue a worthwhile dream? (or am I the only one? ) :goodvibes

Yup!

I'd like to live in China for awhile and work in a special needs foster home. I'd have to liquidate (or roll) my 401K because I'm pretty sure they'd fire me when I didn't show for work :lmao:

I'm doing two of those but neither involves cashing out the 401ks. I'm back in school to go into education but taking on loans instead. I know I can pay those back in a reasonable period plus will add a nice retirement match when I get a job.

Yes it would be tempting to have more funds and pay off various things but not tempting enough to consider cashing out what we've saved & had matched over the years.

We would have to be completely wiped out of all other resources and on our way to homelessness to tap the 401(k).

We have had to live on Dh's 401K for the last 3 years, while he has been looking for work. Now we are down to $300.00 and have to move in with friends. Thank goodness they have a basement.

This is crushing to me. But there is no work in Dh's field. And after all the siezers I have had, my memory for details is gone. I wish they had factories here but they don't.

So Dh is going back to school. As is Dd.

I just remembered that my DH cashed out after he was laid off a looong time ago. We used it for him to go back to school (he had to move 6 hours away and come home once a month..now THAT was fun with three kids). But really, no regrets..he loves his career now, so it was worth it..

yes it was. I have never seen any government program get smaller just bigger... whats going to happen is there will be less of my money to pay for it all... sorry grumpy tax time. I say stop helping everyone let them be hungry nothing like being really hungry to change your mind about working harder...

Im also sick of hearing there arent any jobs out there i have 2 parttime job now that make up for half of what i lost when i lost my job and still interviewing for a better job...

so stop being grumpy like me lol:lmao:

Well...working in a church I can say I see the entitlement people knocking at the door every day..but there is true need as well, and if things are used properly as an aid..NOT a crutch, I'm all for it..I will tell you, they should really reconsider extending unemployment forever and ever..I'm sure there is need, again, but so much abuse. I know a gal who makes much more on umemployment than I do working..and she thinks it's just dandy they keep extending unemployment..why should she get a job that makes you work and earn less? something is screwy...so, yes, there are jobs, but not jobs some people want...this gal will be happy to get a job when the unemployment runs out..if it ever does..she is going on 2 years..There are tons of jobs if you don't mind the type. I work 2 jobs myself..one in retail.

I'm with you! It's hard not to be grumpy sometimes when we gave up our cable and cellphones and have taken part-time jobs, but still our taxes go higher and higher to pay for people who aren't working yet still have their i-phones, cable tv and wii game stations.

I think the extensions have been sorely needed in some areas, not so much in others. To me, it would have made more sense to connect it to local unemployment rates. Someone in an area with a single-digit unemployment rate shouldn't need as much time to find work as people in areas like mine where the rate is over 20% and still climbing. There aren't tons of jobs here even if you don't have any minimum standards - even the McDs in my neighborhood hasn't hired anyone new in almost a year!
