today i took my van in to the honda dealership because the shift interlock was recalled. so i take it in and they ask if i want to do a free multi-point inspection. i said yeah sure why not. i was going to get my van looked over anyway before our trip. so i get a call saying my van was done but they found alot of problems.
my right side engine mount is broken, front engine mount is broken, p/s pump is leaking and making noise, r/f strut is leaking, right side axle boot has a small hole (leaking grease), leak from the trans. side rec diag., r.f outer tie rob boot is weather crack, and there is an oil leak somewhere.

this is NOT what i needed when we are getting ready to leave for a very long car drive to Fl. in just over a month.:furious:

Honda estimated a little over $2000 to fix everything! we just got the van in Nov. (my birthday gift) and then i get hit with this.

and this is stuff i just cant ignore and wait till we get back. ugh! if i lived alot lot lot closer to WDW (like 15 mins away) then yeah, maybe. but we are driving over 27 hrs. no way im taking that chance!

You bought van less than six months ago and it has that many issues? I call Lemon Law! Take it back to the dealer where you bought it a file a complaint!

Silly question but is this a new van? Or a used one with some sort of warranty? That's an awful lot of problems for a Honda :(

We just took our Civic in and it cost a pretty penny to get it in tip top shape (however the car is 13 years old so still going strong).

Take it somewhere else!!! DH was an auto mechanic for years. He saw many guys who would write up work that didn't need to be done yet when business was slow. Could be a lot of that work doesn't need to be done quite yet. Also, motor mount is a pretty big thing. Did you have this vehicle go through some sort if state inspection when u bought it? Take it back to that place and have them look. Also check online to see if any if these things might be under a recall or warranty

Just like it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion from a different doctor, I say get a second opinion from a different mechanic. Ask your friends for recommendations if you don't have one.

You didn't happen to mention your trip to anyone there when you dropped it off, did you? :rolleyes1

Is this car new? Should still be under warranty.

Regardless, take it to another mechanic. Unless you've driven it off a cliff recently I'm having a hard time believing that much stuff could be wrong all at once.

Hopefully it won't be as bad as $2000. Get a 2nd and 3rd estimate.

We use a mobile mechanic for things that are easily fixable (tail lights, brake pads, etc.), and then worst case take it to the family mechanic. Most times it costs between $300 - 900 when we have any problem. We had a motor mount go last year, and had them replaced.

I agree to get another estimate.

We had been going to a place that was really fantastic then new management took over and suddenly there were all of these things wrong with my van. One day they told me that I needed a new rack or something because I was leaking power steering fluid and it would be around $1500. I was about ready to cry and the guy behind the counter came out to me and whispered to go to the auto parts store and buy Stop Leak for about $10 and put it in my power steering reservoir. That was four years ago. Haven't had an issue with it since. We found a new mechanic after that and our new mechanic has never said anything about needing a new rack.

There have been other things that we've needed to fix but just recently, I needed some kind of valve replaced and my battery was leaking acid. I didn't remember that our new mechanic had replaced those things last year, but he did. He went back to his records and saw that everything was under warranty. He could have taken me for over $600 but he didn't. Ended up being $120 which included an oil change and new belts and hoses.

Get a second or third opinion. Good luck.

I'm driving an 11 year old Mercury and have had many issues with it. However, after changing mechanics and having the p.s pump replaced and a motor mount replaced, the car is running a lot better, no more alternators dying due to p.s fluid dripping from the pump, down a pipe into it, and my mpg have actually improved.

I absolutely agree get a second opinion. It sounds like where you went just went nit picking how to squeeze every last dime out of you.

Anyways, I hope all works out and the vacation is amazing!! :D

If it was new, this work and parts would be covered. Sounds like this was a used purchase. This van obviously was driven over some rough terrain. Definitely get another assessment but get it quick. The work, at a non dealership garage, will take some time.

Wow, with all those leaks you should have noticed a lot of spots on the pavement where you park. And usually a broken motor mount is pretty noticeable when you take off. And again, if the p/s pump is leaking and making noise you should be able to tell a difference in the steering. If you were having any symptoms of these problems it should have been taken care of earlier. Sorry if I sound harsh but I have driven many clunkers in my time so I am usually very aware of leaks & noises and just the general feel of the way my car drives.

I took my Honda in for a recall and they came back with a two page list of problems with it. I then drove it for 5 more years without fixing any of the so called problems. I would get a second opinion.

We're missing too much info, but I suspect this a used car, and of course, lemon laws only apply to new cars.
Certainly, a second opinion is a good idea, and a good independent shop can do those repairs for hundreds less.
In my opinion, none of those repairs need to be done before the trip.

Other than being a Chevy, same experience here. Never again will I have a "free inspection" at a dealership when the vehicle is not under warranty.

I'd be upset, too. But then I'd probably stop and think about it, and be happy that they found these problems NOW when you have time to fix them before your trip. I'd also be grateful that I could get them fixed before the trip because I wouldn't want to imagine having car troubles while ON the trip far away from home, that would have been a lot worse.

Did you buy this van new? If so I would think that some or all of these things might be covered under warantee and you won't have to pay for all of them (or at least not all the cost). If the van was purchased new, I would definitely pursue that angle.
