When we visited WDW July 4 - 11 last year I purchased rain ponchos before I left . . .little did I know that my family and I would be wearing plastic bags!! I bought them at our local Wal-Mart and I didn't think that they would be thin plastic baggie like material . . .My family cruxified me and refused to wear them a 2nd time.

I would like to buy new ponchos this year, for our June 20th trip, not the toss away kind, I'm hoping the non-toss away ones are made of vinyl or something that won't stick to your skin like you were a piece of food . . .

Anyone know if I can also buy the "heavier" ones at Wal-Mart?

You can find decent ponchos at most discount stores near the umbrellas. I would suggest you open one to see how thick it is. You can try WalMart, KMart, Target, etc.

I hear what you are saying.
I happened to notice at Target this weekend that there were several density's to choose from. They were, of course, all cheaper than the ones you buy at WDW.
Haven't checked Wal Mart though.

bought mine in the camping section of WalMart about 2 or 3 years ago. Paid about 5 bucks each for them. Have used them over and over! They don't stick as bad as the very thin very cheap ones, but in a drenching rain in the heat of a Florida day anything will stick a bit.

That is only a little less than what you pay at WDW - and the ones at WDW have MICKEY on them! :teeth:

I will be taking mine back for the its 3rd trip this summer. :)

I actually like the thin ones!;) I just buy a bunch of them and toss them when we're finished. Much less for me to keep up with.:D

BethR, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was sitting here thinking, why stress over ponchos when you can get them at WDW for around $5 IF and WHEN you need them.

My sentiments exactly! Buy them for less than $1 each and toss them when finished. Love it!

YEAH, just buy the MM one's who know, you may never need them. We like them because the have snaps for around the arms.

I bought one in the camping section at Meijer for a few dollars 6 yrs. ago before a long trip I was taking. It's heavy enough and long enough to do an excellent job, but I can very easily fold it down small enough to fit flat in a sandwich-size ziploc bag. So it packs great, and I've since used it several times at WDW. I wouldn't mind buying one at WDW if I forgot mine or didn't already have one. But since I do have one that packs so small, I might as well keep making use of it. :D

Yes, Wal-Mart has the slightly heavier ones, as others have said.
These are heavy enough to hang properly when the wind is blowing, and snaps under the arms.

One thing to be careful of: the brand that WalMart carries has rather small-sized hoods. My DH can't wear the WalMart ponchos because he cannot get them on over his head. The same weight poncho from Target works fine for him, though. (Also, the ones at Target come in a handy mesh drawstring bag, and they cost about the same.) We can fit 3 folded ponchos into one mesh bag, and we keep the bag strung from the stroller handle; they are somewhat heavy when folded up tight.

I dislike the WDW ponchos precisely BECAUSE they have Mickey on them, all in the same shade of yellow. I find it much easier to find my family in the sea of ponchos when they are wearing a color that stands out better than that.

I'm with you guys. At 2 for $1 I have several packages for rain and the rapids. They are compact and than there is no issue with folding up these wet things and stuffing them back in my bag.

See...different strokes for different folks. Nice thing that there are acceptable options for everyone.

:)

Yes you can. We brought heavy duty rain ponchos at Walmart. They work wonderfully and they don't tear like the plastic ones.

I have bought the 50 cent a piece plastic ones from Levi type places and use them once and discard. I have also bought the $5 vinyl ones as well. I have gotten Pooh themed ones at K-Mart, Mickey themed at Wal-Mart and No theme at Target. This may be becuase I live in Florida however.

Anyone know if I can also buy the "heavier" ones at Wal-Mart?
But the answer to your question is "Yes"

The only problem with buying them at WDW is that EVERYONE is wearing the same bright yellow mickey rain poncho. If you bring your own, it is easier to find your family members in sea of Mickey Mouse slickers :D

My family absolutely refuses to wear ponchos, we use small Totes folding umbrellas.

We now buy the $5 ponchos....just easier! Funny story though...one year I was there with Gram, Mom, and myself and it started to rain (okay...so it poured like a typhoon). We were at the rose & crown and the waiter felt sorry for us and went and got us garbage bags. Gram had the electrical cart, put her garbage bag on....put a store bag on her head, and looking like a conehead....off she zoomed! Gram died a few years ago, but I still smile every time I think of her zooming off in her cart. She was like a kid....she was more impressed with that cart then she was with the parks!
