NC is supposed to be getting a pretty good snowfall. If you know NC(and the states around it), we don't deal well with snow. We don't have real snowplows or chains on our tires. Just an inch of snow caused roads to completely clog up for hours a few years ago.

So, this is supposed to come in on Christmas afternoon. We always go to my mom's, an hour away, on Christmas, and could easily leave there earlier to avoid getting stuck. The problem is that my ex is supposed to get my son on Christmas afternoon and keep him until Sunday evening. If he does that, there is a good chance he will be stuck there for several extra days until the roads are clear. DS is really unhappy about this possibility. He loves his dad, but being in a 900 square foot house with 5 adults and a 2 year old(plus two little yappy dogs) for a long time period is not his idea of a Christmas vacation, especially when most of the things he considers fun are at our house(Xbox, laptop, guitars and amp, cats, friends nearby)

I'm hoping my ex will agree to get DS tomorrow and keep him until lunch on Saturday. I don't want him to miss time with his son. I am just waiting for the noon local news report to see if they have more info than last night. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure he is going to be bull headed until right in the middle of the storm, and then wish he had listened.

Any thoughts?

Hopefully your ex will work with you on the visiation. I am traveling on Christmas day too and am keeping a close eye on the weather.

Now my question is...who uses chains for 1 inch of snow? Actually, who uses chains? The only time I remember anyone using chains is school busses way back when I was a youngin'.

Personally I'm hoping the snow skips NC! As much as a white Christmas would be pretty, I think I'm done with the snow for this season! Although the kids would like a good snowfall for some sledding.

Anyway, could your DS talk to his dad? Not sure if that would help, but maybe if he had the conversation, and emailed him links to the weather reports ;) , it would help.
Good luck! Think warm thoughts!!

I thought people used them up north where there is a lot of snow? I guess that shows how much I know. Most people around here don't have 4 wheel drive either.

I don't think its going to skip us. They aren't saying how much, but the way they have it snowing from 8pm Saturday night until late in the evening Sunday is really scaring me.

His calling his dad will probably not help in this situation. I am sure he is going to say he wants his "family"(he, DS and his 2 year old step sister) together for Christmas. Actually, if he got him tomorrow and kept him until Saturday lunch it would mess up my family's usual schedule, but that would be preferable to the alternative.

Is there any reason why your DS couldn't take XBOX at least with him? Are you and your ex really good at co parenting? I mean, are you both very flexible when it comes to last minute type changes in visitation?

I feel your pain on the snow. I'm in upstate SC and although it was 68 here yesterday, the news is still reporting a 50% chance of snow on Saturday.

My parents, who are supposed to come to my house for Christmas breakfast, only live 10 miles away but in a VERY rural area and on a dirt road that is pretty much unpassable in icky weather.

Xbox maybe, although he couldn't play with his friends through the Xbox live feature. And the 2 year old(plus other grandchildren and cousins coming in and out) could ruin it, the headphones, or the controllers. BTDT. Same problem with his laptop. He could take his older guitar, but he is getting a new one for Christmas which I am not about to let him take(same reason as above). It really is a tiny house(well about the same as ours, but we only have him and me) and there is no personal space. When he is there, he, his dad and his sister sleep in one small bedroom.

I think we do pretty well at co-parenting. He has been pretty flexible, as have I. I do worry that he is going to think I am trying to mess up his "family" time. His 2 year old has visitation at the same time and I know he won't be flexible with that mom. They do not communicate well.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry so much if he lived close by, but it is about an hour and a half away, and not close to a main road that will be plowed early on.

Me no likey!

Sorry to take a selfish turn, but we were starting our trip to SC on Christmas. We were stopping in Dunn and had planned on continuing on on Sunday morning. Is that a bad plan? We weren't planning on the full 8 hours, but are open to it.

Suggestions?

OP, I hope your plans don't get messed up.

We doing things slightly different this year: DD12 is with me Christmas eve, we open our presents at midnight ( i used to work on Christmas day early ,so this became our thing) and then her DF would have her Christmas day until New Years.

We live in Va. me in the southeastern part and he lives in Richmond, so it is about hour or so drive. We are doing Christmas around 4 or 5 pm Christmas eve, then we are having dinner and chillin for a while then I am taking her up there so she can wake up at his house on Christmas morning ,which she has never done after we split. Then I am going back home and WAITING for the snow-happy happy joy joy. but at least I don't have to go out in it.

OP-hope all works out for everyone.

Most people up here don't have chains either (as far as I know they're illegal on paved roads because of the damage they do), and 4 wheel drive is probably more common than down south but still a minority of cars on the road. The problem is that driving in snow/ice is a learned skill, and down there y'all have got a lot of drivers who have had neither occasion nor reason to learn it.

Good luck and stay safe! I hate being on the road for the first snowfall of the year because it feels like people have forgotten how to handle it. I can't even imagine a long drive in a place where snow is such a rarity.

I think that area of NC may get the worst of it, so I'd keep on truckin' if I was you. You could stop an hour further south and that would make a big difference. That is around the area my parents and my ex live in. Of course, Dunn is right off I-95, so that would be the first area plowed.

I think that you should just see what happens. If your son ends up with his dad for an extra day or so, that's not a horrible thing. Also, I think that you are overreacting to the weather report. There's little chance that the small amount of snow that is forecast is going to cause the roads to be impassible for days.

Do you live in NC? Seriously, if there are 4 inches of snow, things will shut down for days. We don't have plows. We have dump trucks with make shift plow attachments. And those are used on main roads only for the first few days after a bigger storm(yes over 2 inches is a BIG storm in these parts) Noone is used to driving in snow or ice around here, so when people get out, it is bad news. Forecasts never seem to be right around here. They may call for 4 inches and we get nothing, or they may call for 4 inches and we get 12. Our biggest snow 10 years ago, I think they were calling for 4-6 inches and we got 23! Talk about things shutting down; we were out of school for two weeks with that one.

I'm going to message his dad and see what he is thinking. It may be that he already has something in mind in case the forecast turns nasty. If not, he may have to work Monday morning, which would mean he has to come up this way and I could meet him in Chapel Hill(about 10 miles away).

An inch of snow closes school for 2 days here in Asheville! Buncombe county is huge and while it might not be bad in the city, it is bad in the outlying areas.

We are gearing up for a conservative guess-timate of 2-6 inches here. I have a feeling it is going to be more. Why do I have that feeling????? Because I am on call for the group home, that's why! LOL

We have to have adequate staff on all shifts and if heavy snow means that enough employees can't make it in to work the previous shift has to stay or I have to cover what I can. Our maintenance worker does offer a pick up and delivery service, but that can take hours for him to get everyone. Snow is SUCH a hassle when you run a 24/7 residential facility!!!!

It looks like your area is 30% and I'm in the 50% area. They really don't know until tomorrow night. www.wral.com

Could you tell me where I-95 is in all of that?

I believe it runs through Fayetteville and I'm presuming it is dipping into that 70% region, right?

The forecast up here says this isn't major--but it sounds like for you guys, it is pretty major.

His dad lives in the 50% area, very close to the 70% area. That is what I'm worried about is him getting the kids home. I think we will definitely know more tomorrow. I am just going to wait and see and pray that its not a big snow.

Dunn is the 50% area (I'm 20 mins from Dunn) and it looks like Fayettteville is the 70% area.
