I used the wrong points - can member services help

I hope I can phrase the question in the right way. We have a December use year. I booked a reservation for 3 days coming up December 2023, I used 2022 points for the reservation. I then rented that reservation to a family through Davids and I don't want to do anything that could possibly jeapordize their reservation (it's for a value studio which I wouldn't be able to replace if I lost it)

My mistake though is that I have point from 2021 that I should have used instead.

My 2 questions are - could I have used the 2021 points for that reservation or did I need to use those points before December. If I could have used those points, do you think member services would be able to switch my 2022 points for my 2021 points so that I can bank the 2022 ones?

This is a bit of a learning curve - we had a family trip a couple of months ago and I should have used those 2021 points then. I just didn't realize what year they were from until I tried to bank them.
 
A reservation in December 2023 cannot use December 2021 points.

December 2021 UY Points that were banked into 2022 would have to be used for reservations that occur between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2023.
 
Call MS, they can allocate points. I did this when I bought a contract with banked points. They swapped them in for my previously booked reservation. They can see what points from what contract are being used.

But the 2021 UY points can't be used for something that happens in 2023 UY.
 

Dec 2021 points must be used for a trip that ends no later than Nov 30, 2022, unless banked. If banked, and banking needed to be done by no later than July 31, 2022, those points could be used for a reservation that occurs between Dec 1, 2022 and Nov 30, 2023, but not to reserve any time after Nov 30, 2023, and they couldn't be banked a second time into the Dec 2023 use year to use for a Dec 2023 trip.

With a Dec use year, the only points you could have possibly used to reserve a Dec 2023 trip were banked points from the Dec 2022 use year, "current" use year points (with "current" use year defined as the use year during which the trip occurs) from the Dec 2023 use year, or borrowed points from the Dec 2024 use year.
 
I'd still call MS. The completed reservation should have automatically taken them? It's confusing it didn't.
It wouldn't have if they were banked after the reservation was made. I personally think they could make the pulling of points much easier than they do, but I think they want us to be responsible for that to avoid any possible corner case issues in that.

Like when you free up the banked points by canceling something. MS has the ability to reallocate them, but the system doesn't automatically.

Correct, but if MS fixes this for the OP it would be a Pixie Dust moment, not saying it isn't worth the call because I would myself. But it is fully the member's responsibility (which the OP 100% has taken ownership of) to make sure the allocation is done properly. I just really wish whenever you check in to the hotel, they check your points and use the closest to expiration points in your account (or always dynamically allocated to the best interest of the member, it can be coded up but do I trust Disney IT that's another question).

There is no way to use banked 2021 points since those expire before the trip. To even use 2022 points, those would have had to be banked.

If you didn’t do that, and it used your 2023, then that can easily be fixed by banking those and having points reallocated.
 
The system automatically uses the points that will expire first for your reservation. The points you are hoping to use will expire before Dec reservation so they were not used by the system.
 
Hello, thank you for your help and sorry for the delayed response to it - we just had our long weekend and I was only able to call DVC membership this morning. Yes the problem was in how I booked our vacations - but now I know for the future :) The cast member was not able to reallocate the points but I'm very happy to have called as he suggested another option of potentially banking with the international point system. If we don't use the points before December (maybe we need another trip :cutie:) I will bank them in this other system.
