I use Tide detergent because it's a status symbol?!?

A woman from our church came over with fund raiser items.
She said they needed to get more money into the church. We have a smaller church. We have a new pastor that is used to a larger church.

This woman wanted to know if we could commit a specific amount per month to donate above what we already give each week.

I said we have a budget, and right now with upcoming surgery that isn't covered by insurance 100% we are really cutting back.

This woman was in our kitchen and said she noticed we used Tide detergent. She said that people who use Tide do so because it's a status symbol. :confused3 No, I use both Tide and Gain because I like them.
She said we could buy Xtra brand from discount stores for 1/3 of the price of Tide. If we spend $10 a month on Tide, but Xtra costs $3 we could afford to donate that $7.

Then she mentioned our dishwasher detergent I had on the counter since I just started the dishwasher. The detergent I had was free with a coupon I had, but she said the Cascade 2 in 1 Action Packs are again a status symbol as are the Clorox Wipes I have.

If I just gave up wanting to be "in" and start using generic items (which she said are made by the same manufacturers) we could clear up a lot in our budget to donate.

My husband said we will continue to give what we do each week, but until the surgery is out of the way and all bills are paid we will not be donating any additional money. He was really offended.

DH told her that he works, and he decides where our money goes. It's none of her business.

I don't mind donating extra if it's needed, but we just can't right now. That doesn't make us people who use Tide as a status symbol.

Do you think using name brand products like Tide and Clorox wipes means you
are using these products because it's a status symbol? I thought people used what they liked. Besides the Clorox Wipes I got 1/2 price at Target. I bought 4. The Cascade I got free from a coupon, but that's none of her business.

I guess she can't say much because she and her husband drove off in their gold colored Lincoln after just getting back from their winter home in Florida last week, but I guess that's different.

What I think is that she was trying to use guilt tactics to make you cave to the pressure. Donations are supposed to be just that - DONATIONS! They shouldn't be solicited, and you shouldn't be pressured into giving more than you are able. God appreciates whatever you can do.

Hmph, I get mine at Tiffany's. Comes in a lovely silver box with my name engraved on it. Yeah and you thought your "Bloomingdales" was all fancy. Ha! Nice try. :rotfl2:

Hmmm...well...your girl at Tiffany's must not be THAT fond of you, or else she would have told you about the 24kt Gold box that is out now...
:snooty:

Please girl, if you were "in" you'd know the platinum boxes are where it's at.

You did NOT just talk about my momma!

:scared1:
No...uh...um...I was talking about...your Mother-In-Law?
:rolleyes1

Aw....look over me, I'm just jealous because I can only afford to use unscented tide...

:flower3:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Well you two think you're all special, but clearly you didn't see the matching accessories. Dangle earrings with small tide bottles, a platinum ring that says "Clorox", even a necklace with Tide and Clorox pendants that are diamond crusted! And you think you did well with just the box. For shame.... :snooty: :sad2:

Today...Publix had their brand detergent Buy One Get one Free...I WILL NOT BE SEEN WITH NOT ONE, BUT TWO DISCOUNT BRANDS!!

I will wait for the Gain to go up a few more dollars!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I love it!! That something I would do:lmao: :lmao:

Yeah, we are sarcastic like that. It keeps things interesting :thumbsup2

Wait - I just heard that they're coming out with a numbered Limited Edition Tide. Pick up your precertification application at your local laundromat or grocery store. A lottery will be held to determine those that will be allowed to purchase them. Now, for those that are lucky enough to purchase them, will you actually use it, or will you display it as a collectible in your curio at home? I bet the Ebay prices will soar.

Will there be a collectible lithograph?

People wear it like it's Chanel no.5. It's detergent. I don't want to smell your clothes two rows back in Church. Take it easy on the Tide.

Tell me about it! That's why I buy the Tide Free and the Free Bounce sheets. Smells are getting to me more and more.....;)

I give you credit for being so polite to the woman. Granted, we attend a large church, but I can't imagine anyone questioning how much we donate each week....yet alone suggesting ways you could cut back to give more! Good luck with your surgery.
