I thought that you couldn't drive your car inside of Fort Wilderness?

Yes, I realize that campers have their cars. But if I want to see the campgrounds, I have to take a bus?

We are renting a cabin in December and need some advice as to whether or not I should rent a golf cart.

you can't really park anywhere in the campground. The campers will give you dirty looks for driving around in your car. I'd get a golf cart.

But they rent bikes, right? So if we want to explore, it might be a better way. Besides, I really don't want to rent a car AND a golf cart, if I don't need to. We'll be in the parks and other resorts checking out the Christmas decorations all day.

bikes are available as well, correct. How many are travelling with you, you are right, for what they get for a golf cart, you can almost rent a cadillac.

It's just DH & myself. We really want to experience the campground. We always rent a car, 'cause we love going to resorts to have dinner. I'm thinking that maybe I'll rent a cart for a day and spend most of that day at the campground.

that's probably the best thing to do.... or take a cart key, and borrow someone elses while they are at the parks.

Buses don't go into the loops so you won't see all the various campers and site.

I know the best way is with a golf cart, but I'm not aware of any rule or policy peventing you from driving inside the campground and loops. The only parking tho is at Meadows and is very limited. If you only plan to take a quick peek at several or even all the loops and only once then I would use the car since this can be done in an hour or so and unless you plan to use the cart a lot that day $50/hr is sort of steep and the cost of bikes is not dirt cheap.

I just can't see $ 50 a day for a golf cart. In the winter we stay for months and walk the loops often, but we also drive around in the truck. No one ever gives us dirty looks. Just make sure you drive slowly and carefully and you won't have any trouble exploring.

The other problem with a cart is even if reserved, you can't get it till 1pm and if you are only there for the day, you have to return it by 5pm when the bike barn closes.

The golf carts rates really are expensive! Perhaps you could rent it for one day?? Maybe the day that you plan to relax around the Fort? This would allow you to browse all of the loops and ride to Meadows and Settlement areas. After having it, you're almost guaranteed to be hooked! ha :thumbsup2

But honestly, golf carts are not necessary...just a nice way to cruise the Fort. We had fun riding bikes during our first trip to the Fort! (however shortly after that, we purchase our own personal golf cart to take to FW with us!):rotfl:

For me, I would skip renting the car and use DME or a limo to the campground. Once on property Disney Transportation will take you to all resorts for diner and decoration viewing.

For exploring the campground, nothing beats a bike.

Except walking since it's sort of hard to fall off something walking when you're gawking at something. We used to really like the bikes, but after we turned 50 plus a few years, and one time the DW accidently when off the sidewalk and tried to get back on and crashed the bikes were put away for good. :goodvibes

:lmao: As I remember it we were just over the bridge next to the 1500 loop heading for the settlement and I said something and she turned her head and the next thing I knew she was on the ground. When she tried to look at me that's when things went south quickly. :rotfl2: We had to go back to our site in the 1600 loop, medicate (not the stuff you're talking about) and then take the bus that added like 45 min to our evening destination.

I also just thought of something. If you are not staying at Fort Wilderness, they won't let your car into the Loops area. They have a lot specifically for Fort Visitors. After parking there, you can take a bus to the Meadows area to rent a cart or bicycles.

You can always rent a bike at the bike barn or get in some good walking. The thought of paying $50+ per day makes me weak in the knees. If you rent a bike from the barn, though, they have to be turned in each day, I think: no multi-day rentals.

Ooops, never mind then. A cart for 1 day would work then. But to make full use of it, you would need to have an afternoon and the next morning at the fort

Renting 2 bikes is probably darn near the cost of renting the Golf Cart but I am not really sure as you may be able to rent the bikes per hour. But to be truly honest, the best way to see the Fort is Looping in a golf cart. :thumbsup2

IF you can do it, rent a bike, and not only ride around the campground, but go over to VWL, and WL and enjoy the holiday decorations there!

We often rent bikes at WL, and ride over to the campground, the holiday decorations of some of the campers are nearly as good as Disneys! Of course, you can't ride around when it's dark, but still, riding the bikes around to see both the Halloween and Christmas decorations is a special thing we do!
