After spending most of the past year unemployed I moved to Virginia last month to become an Area Executive Director with a national charity. In doing so, I thought I was moving away from the heavy snowfalls so common in New England. And then it snowed this past weekend.

Here are some photos taken around my apartment complext in Northern Virginia the day after the snow stopped falling. The one of the solo car is my car before I began digging it out of the snow.

Personally Ithink you got of easy! Lol! Until you have gone thorugh a blizzard quickly folloed by a Lake Effect Snow fall then you are blessed! Last year we went through 4 bouts of 8+ inches of snow... which made me happy that I moved to a neighborhood surrounded by people who own SnowBlowers!

I pressed the send button before I was done...

I can remember 3 or 4 years ago the City of Toronto having to call in the Army to help dig them out when they got hammered real bad... people like me wont ever let them forget that! :)

I'm used to Nor'easters back home coming off the Atlantic across Long Island Sound. But this past weekend we received about 30 inches on top of the 4-6 inches that we had the previous week. And I heard this morning that today's storm may drop another 10 inches on the region. Thank goodness for the Internet so I can keep working from home and stay in touch with family and friends outside of the region.

That's a lot of snow! We're used to those kinds of snow, but we also have the necessary equipment to get it moved quickly. That kind of snow can really cripple cities that are not equipped to deal with it.

We have been very fortunate! We have not had more than 4 inches so far!

Not sure where you're from but if people have snowblowers then they're equipped for snow!! Stores in this area don't even stock shovels.

The areas of Northern VA and south are so illequipped it's frightening. I saw news stories of families trapped in houses with no power and 45 degree inside temps for days! My friends in DC have missed tons of days of work. I live in Va Beach and there was no school for 3 days after 8 inches of snow (that happened on a Saturday!). After growing up in NY I'd take a 2-3 foot blizzard/lake effect snow before I'd choose to be here for 6 inches!

Great pics DisneyDave~ DBF's fam lives in the Centreville area and I have a lot of friends in Arlington. So crazy and I hear you're getting more today plus this weekend!

Allow me to sum up Northern Virginia for you.

65 degrees and sunny today, snow tomorrow.

Welcome to the most bi-polar weather state in the country!

I just take for granted that we are in an area prepared and that down there there probably isnt as much demand for snow removal equi[ment! :teacher:

We used to live in WI, and we moved to OK almost 11 years to get away from the cold & snow. I don't think we moved far enough south. :confused3 This area is ill-equiped to handle the snow effectively. Stores do carry shovels & ice melt, but the cities/towns are not able to remove the snow quickly & efficiently enough.

I was absolutely shocked when the schools closed for a recent Thursday & Friday, the storm was still coming when the schools were closed - and the snow did not get here until Friday - early afternoon. I don't know how they decide to close, but I thought that was ridiculous.

I really dislike the snow & cold, but there are times I would rather be up north where they can handle the snow instead of being here.

we decided it 's my friend's fault...she is staying in the DC area with her sick mother...we haven't gotten any of the predicted storms since she left so she seems to have taken it with her.( normally lives in Ohio snow belt, we were supposed to get a bad one today and if fizzled out again , yahoo!) . i'll see if i can find her address so you can thank her lol

It snowed here earlier this year. That's two years in a row. It snowed so hard it almost accumulated on the ground.

i lived in Lubbock ( after living in PA)when i was a kid...the neighbors had never seen snowsuits or sleds before. course when we moved here from there, the neighbors assumed we all rode horses to school
:confused3

A few people suggested that when I moved here last month that I had brought the New England Winter Weather with me in the moving van.

My sister and b-i-l live in the DFW Area and they sent me some photos via phone of their last snowfall.

I feel your pain Dave! We don't live in the South (we live in NJ), but our winters are usually reasonably mild and this year we have gotten well over 60 inches of snow and are expecting another 12-18 inches today. On the upside---work is closed, I love snowdays!!

It's Official...I am now working from home :surfweb: for the 3rd day this week due to all of the snow that has been falling in the D.C. Area the past few days.

I need a trip to WDW. Only thing is I probably can't get a flight and my car is buried again. :lmao:

Suffering right with you Dave, here in suburban Maryland! Only my company must be the only one officially open today despite the horrendous driving conditions; so no pay for me :rolleyes1

DS just walked in to my room and said that our county has stopped all snow plowing for the time being and the power company has to pull back on power restoration efforts until the 30-40 mph winds die down.:scared1: They have been going full blast for 6 days now!

Hope we keep our power!!!

Ditto that. We're getting slammed again too in southern PA. There's no place left to put the snow...

They closed our major highways and interstates.

Day 4...Office closed due to snow. And yes, I can't get a flight out...both Dulles and Reagan National have been closed due to the snow.
