I think some of us owe Yavn an apology...

I think we all need to remember that VMK started being created over 10 years ago. I know it was not released until about 2 years ago but we need to remeber this. These people have spent 10 years of their life making a game. How you would you like to spend 10 years on something and then suddenly get a mailbox full of jerks calling you a liar when something happened that was out of your control?

I want to make it clear since someone brought Yavn's name into my thread, Yavn had nothing to do with that situation. I am frustrated with VMK as a whole and their policies when it come to situations like mine but I also appreciate a lot of what VMK has done. My daughter loves VMK and I know for the most part, it's a safe place on the net for her to go.

Again, my post was not 'bashing' Yavn in any way nor did I mention a single VMK person. :)

I BluMonkeyboy, if any of you can see this post Declare 1/22/07 as Yavn (and staff) appriciation day

No you did not and I so agree with your frustrations with VMK Moderating Team about your situation and everyone knows I have taken things directly to the top in the past when I felt they needed attention.

Not brown nosing but I think everyday should be Yavn and staff appreciation day....even when things do not go the way we like, they have created an Awesome Game!

Hey Nano,
How do you know this? Can you post a link? I've not heard this before?!!
Thanks,
Tiki

Well true, but every day should also be Teacher appriciation day and all those other things we have. Veterans day ( every day should be appriciation day for them) and so on

I agree, not many people post when they are grateful to the staff members, yavn, QA, etc. Although others do and that is wonderful! I admit i was a little agitated with the new fireworks and VMK raising the requirement for the green car, but i understand what they were doing. After all the Green Car was rated Expert Level. It is not supposed to be easy. I must say i am sorry though, there is no excuse for me to have been angitated at them.

I know many do not like the new items, but come on. Give them a break, do you not see how much they worked on these just to get them out, and a lot of people turned them down in a day, declaring they did not like them. It is almost as if no matter what they do to try and please us, someone never is happy. I am sorry that they have to put up with those people, but they have done a good job doing so.

After all that i just want to say a big 'ol thanks to Yavn, Staff, QA, CL, other creators, and everyone else!

I think what Yavn and his creative team would like instead of all the bellyaches and bashing is some creative suggestions as to what they could do to make the game better....

I've got a million of them, i always liked coming up with this kind of stuff lol. I just dont know what to do with them. :confused3

Like I said in my previous post in this thread. He can say they want suggestions all he wants, but this is simply not true. When you make a suggestion you get a letter in return saying they do not take suggestions.

I have a few questions. Yavn is allowed to have a site even though in VMK we would be banned for mentioning that? How did people find out about it? If he had such a problem with it, shouldn't he have posted it on VMK.com? I think it is a little odd that he chose to post it on a PERSONAL site over the official one.

Here's my opinion.
Disney fans complain. A lot. I know that I do my fair share. We want everything to be perfect.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :thumbsup2 :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I know that I've woken up more than once and wen't "good grief, did I freak out yesterday over THAT?" :lmao: I have to remind myself to take a chill pill and grow up.

I'm overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they have put out over the few months I've been playing. Most of the time I feel like I can't keep up. Are there things I'd like to see changed? I suppose, but I know I couldn't do a better job. I'm happy with this free game that they have gifted me with and I enjoy the newsletters no matter what's in them. It's more info than I had before I read it!

 Well let's see Doc, ah, maybe posting here:confused3 that does not get you a letter.

And beleive me VMK reads :surfweb:everything or almost ;) everything posted here.

Yes, if there is anything that we can learn from this (besides being more courteous to those who give us so much), is that Yavn+co read the DIS.

This is both a curse and a blessing.

On the Curse Side: we say mean things. Even though we "think" those words would never be read by the Staff, but this has proven that they actually do. Yavn actually read posts on this board and was actually hurt by them. It is clear that VMK frequent these boards, so we should wise up and not say such hurtful things.

On the Blessing Side: It is now clear that this board may be our best route of suggesting something. This experience shows that Yavn goes through and reads posts... so, it shows he reads other posts as well. Make suggestions, and they take them to heart.

But just as Mal said earlier in this "broadcast," we must be aware that Yavn+co are flesh and blood. They read posts by their "fans" that call them liars. That is some hurtful stuff.

And thus I am sorry for the part I played... :sad2:

Virtual Magic Kingdom was created by the Sulake Corporation...the same company that made Habbo Hotel. VMK was modeled very closely to Habbo Hotel in the manner that it is set up, characters, etc. Habbo Hotel began in the year 2000, making the game having just turned 7 years old. Since VMK was modeled after Habbo Hotel, that means it was planned and created after Habbo Hotel began...making the its planning and creation much shorter than 10 years. So no, these people did not spend 10 years of their life working on VMK. They did spend time working on Habbo Hotel before releasing it online, but VMK came after that, and by that point, most of the technical stuff had already been taken care of since they had it down with Habbo Hotel...all they really needed to do was refine it and Disney-fy it, and that takes considerably less time than 10 years. I'm really not trying to nitpick here, but I feel we should be accurate in what we say.

As far as this whole thing is concerned, I have never read Yavn's blogs, I pretty much have been absent from the whole "insider" thing of VMK for the last few months, just playing the game at "face value" because things were frustrating me so much. So I feel I'm coming in with an objective point of view.

First of all, I understand why people were frustrated. Apparently Yavn said one thing, and didn't really deliver on what he said without any explanation as to why he didn't do it. When you know that people are reading this and read it with expectation, you also have to realize that not delivering on your word with no explanation will turn things sour quickly. At the very least, something to the effect of "sorry, this will have to wait for another time" could have been said. But it should be expected that people will be frustrated over the lack of promised information...free game or not. When someone says something, people generally expect he or she will remain true to his or her word.

On the flip side, I can understand Yavn's frustration in how he is being treated as a result. Criticism needs to be handled constructively and people could have voiced their complaints in a much more dignified manner. There was no need for name calling of any sort, it's uncalled for. It's ok to be disappointed, even upset, but it's not ok to start turning it into verbal abuse.

What makes you think that they did none of the work? They CREATED VMK, they did not copy it from habbo. Almost everything is different, there are like no things that are the same.

They wouldn't do that, they would need to get copyrights... ask the owners of habbos' permission, and a lot more stuff. They worked on their own game, and it is in no way connected to habbo in any way.

Just because it's the same company means absolutely nothing. It could be made by Nintendo for pete's sake and still been a great game. Did you look at all the differences?

I'm sure if you ask yavn he would tell you that habbo was not something they just used and stuck on and changed stuff, VMK is its own game, and habbo is its own game.

I think part of the trouble is that all of us, Yavn and VMK staff included, tend to forget that many of the players really are from the target market group (8-14) and lack patience and, let's be honest, basic manners in many cases. This translates often into frustration when new things are not brought out "right now" with the accompanying temper tantrums. It also means that a lot of the players have no real conception of the need to balance development time, marketing, and legal issues. While more mature players can just shrug with an "oh well, that is cool and will come out when it comes out" younger players just get upset when they are told one thing and it does not happen. Remember, if you read something in print, that makes it so. It doesn't always, of course, but that is the perception. Just look how difficult it is for the news media to retract a story when new facts are uncovered.

I am very sorry Yavn felt he was bashed and called names. On the other hand, this is not the first time that we were told "something for sure was going to happen" and it never did. I have all the respect in the world for the craftsmanship of VMK. It is a lovely bit of programming from the animation of the graphics (take a look at the stream in Snow White's forest next time you are just ambling through the game) to the interaction of the avatars. However, I still believe VMK is struggling a bit with the issue of even-handed playing; particularly with regard to the age group for which it was developed. I like the newspage previews but just a bit of caution on the staff's part (e.g. "an exciting new room based on EPCOT is coming to VMK soon" instead of "in the next newsletter I will be talking about a new room based on EPCOT") might alleviate some of the unfortunate perceptions that were made earlier.

VMK was created by the original designers of Habbo Hotel. While the IN GAME diffeences are siugnificant. The code base is essentially the same. and really, you could ask any of the amatuer programmers around her (and there are many) of how easy it is to compare the two.

You missed my point. He was, I believe, speaking concerning "contact us" as far as making suggestions. I find it hard to believe that they spend all that time on WHOMPing people for mentioning other sites in game, and then he would allude to other sites himself. Of course, he has flipped the double standard thing a few times.
