I think my hamster is dying

My poor hammy is very old (almost 4). so hes had issues with dry feces before but had some stuck to his fur yesterday. Today hes lagathric, cold and not moving alot. Hes not getting active when you hold or pet him. Hes resting right now in a bowl in a warm room with me. Poor hammy.

I'm sorry, seriously, I loved our hamsters. That's why we're not getting any more, I just can't handle them dying anymore.

We just went outside and were sitting on the lawn and he got semi excited. Well as excited as a hamster that will no longer stand up can be. I tried to make him take water but it didnt seem to help. He rested on the heating pad too but that didnt help either.

I work for a vet. You can take him in, the Dr. can do an exam, and then decisions can be made, perhaps euthanasia. I'm so sorry

This might sound crazy, but I would bring him to the vet to be put to sleep. I didn't with my hamsters, and felt guilty.

cant afford the vet, guess im hoping he makes it. He just woke up long enough to itch his ear. Made me smile. Hes resting in his cage right now, I feel guilty putting him down for awile, but I cant stop crying. Who knew a hammy could steal my heart.

We're on our 5th hamster. Four years old is senior citizen status for a hamster. Be happy that yours has had a long life. Keep him warm, and perhaps take some photos with you or the kids holding him. Also, find a shoe box if you want to do a backyard burial. Our hamsters have all had "funeral services" in our backyard. They even have little rocks for headstones.

So sorry... 4 is a long life for a hamster. When ours was ill we were out of town and our pet sitter heated a cloth in the microwave for him to sleep on. She also gave him grapes to he would get some fluids.

he wont take food, I sirynge fed him some liquid but I know hes going to pass. I took a bunch of pictures.

I, too, had no idea it would be so hard to hold my hamster as he died. I know what you are feeling...

It's clear from your posts that you've given him such a loving, happy four years. What a lucky, lucky little guy he has been!

So sorry about your hamster We got ours about a year ago and I didn't expect to become to attached to her. The kids are usually in bed before she gets feisty in the evening so I spend more time with her than they do. They're very sweet.

Grandkids talked me into a hamster. I had NO idea they only lived about 2 1/2 years or I never would have gotten her....too hard to lose her. My vet doesn't work with small animals, so I guess I better start looking for a hamster vet, just in case.

I am so sorry, OP....just the thought of losing dumb Coconut is sad, so I hope your little one passes peacefully.

I'm very sorry for you and your hamster.

We lost ours just a few days ago, she died in my hands while wrapped in a wash cloth trying to keep her warm. She was 2.5 y/o and we adored her.

It sounds like it is his time, all you can do is love him and keep him warm and comfortable. Who knew these little critters could have such an impact on our hearts?

I'm sorry too. My little Hammie is about 2. We lost a little white dumbo rat a few years ago (she had a stroke and I had my BIL put her down, poor Stitch baby). It was heartbreaking. I also lost 2 baby squirrels a few years ago who absolutely stole and broke my heart.
