My oldest lab is almost 8. He's turning into a crotchety old man. I have a vet appt for him next week, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with old man doggy syndrome?
For the past few weeks he's changed a lot! He's started getting possessive of his food (we have two other, younger labs but they all eat separate, so no one can steal anyone else's food) so we've moved him from the normal feeding area to his own space inside the house. He usually loves to go outside and play in the water and ball, etc, but now all he seems to want to do is lay in his bed or in his kennel and not come out. Even bribing him with treats isn't working so much.
If I take him by the collar to physically get him out of his kennel (where he sleeps at night) he'll growl at me! He's never ever been like that, so that's why I made the appointment. Something is going on there and we need to get some tests done. After being in his kennel all night you'd think he'd be wanting to head right out in the morning to pee... nope! I have to coax him out somehow! We leave his kennel door open all day so he can go in and out if he wants to and more often than not, he's in it instead of outside or in the house with us.
He's eating and drinking fine, but is just getting introverted and kind of mean and just not himself. Our two oldest are in charge of feeding, letting out, etc. when they are home, but I've taken over him because I don't want him to snap at them. I don't know if its because we have a baby coming and he knows there's something going on with me. Any ideas?

good luck to you & pls post after the appt. ( maybe call the Vet back & ask them to call if there is an appt sooner, like if someone cancels...just a thought)
