In class today, we were given a problem to solve by inputting the info into our calculators. I have a TI 84 Plus graphing calculator. The guy that sits a couple of seats behind me shouted his answer, which the professor said was wrong. I showed her mine and she said it was correct. Well, Mr. Smarty Pants wasn't convinced and asked to see how I did it. I tried to show him, he looks at my calculator and yells, "Your calculator is so ghetto!" What???? I told him that there was nothing ghetto about a $130 calculator! :teeth: :teeth: He still wasn't convinced and went on to show me how he did it in his calculator, never mind that he got the wrong answer. :rolleyes1

Unless there is an alternate meaning to ghetto that I'm not familiar with, I think my calculator was definitely insulted. :teeth:

I would much rather have a ghetto calculator that gets the right answer rather then his cool calculator that gets the wrong answer.

So, ghetto also means uncool? :confused3

Pretty much nowadays. Most suburban kids are saying it now, some who never even stepped foot in a "ghetto"

I guess just about everything is gay and ghetto for young kids these days. :confused3 My oldest is 14 and he does refer to various things as being gay. I haven't heard him use the word ghetto though, not yet anyway. :rolleyes1

They must use nicer language here in the Detroit area because I keep hearing my nephew say "that's sweeeeet." I gave him one of those handheld TV's for Christmas & he must have said it was 'sweet' a bizzilion times! :rolleyes2

Who makes up all this slang stuff? I thought I was pretty cool & 'with it' but I don't understand kids when they talk anymore. OMG! I'm turning into my Mother! :faint:

BTW ~ Hi Rita!

I very much agree

Oh God, don't get me started on "sweet" and "sick"

I get sweet, but what does sick mean? :teeth:

Rose, I think all this means that we are old and unhip! ;) :teeth:

yes your calculator was insulted.

I personally hate the words ghetto and sweet. People who use ghetto have usually never set foot in one. and Gay is just annoying. Its upsetting that racial slurs are frowned upon, but insults based on sexual preferance are looked past.

I have no idea, but I see it on MTV all the time though also on the show "Inked" on A&E

This guy got a new truck and he kept saying "thats so sick man!"

I'm guessing it means cool or good :confused3

Sick does mean cool. Atleast in my area it started out as a refrence used in sports, as in "that goal was wicked sick" (and yes I'm from NH so we use wicked). It sort of has translated into every day use since then.

I also hate when people say things are gay. We had a teacher in my high school who was openly gay and on diversity day (a theme day during spirt week) he gave a speech about what it was like to hear that as a gay person; it was really moving and since then I've never used the word.
